wow, have not heard fotheringay for ages, but as I remember, the ladies loved this band as much as the men did, just kind of a band that everyone loved. Thanx for putting this on
Listening to this thru the headphones at half past cranked up...Sandy's vocals definitely remind me that men have nipples too...;o) A true piece of music. Thank you Lady Silver!! Peace
I saw Sandy perform in the early days of Fairport.... needless to say I remember it still with huge affection. I have heard she was a difficult personality, but now we have only one of the most remarkably touching voices ever recorded to remember her by. I listen to these songs and I weep for those days gone by.
Re. whatever Mr Plant may have said - I'm surprised he could have appreciated anything or anyone that wasn't screaming it's tits off. Anything he may have said about Sandy is completely irrelevant.
@atukived you obviously have no knowledge of Robert PLants work other thans early Led Zeppelin - Tryy the album "Raisin Sand" or the recent "Band of Joy", and also remember his pre-LZ days in British folk music, perhaps you will understand a little better. He too, even now, has a voice and a talent for song which puts him firmly in the highest echelons.
This is one of my favourite songs.. Its too beautiful! the piano, superb guitar solo and amazing vioce get me everytime! Thanks for posting. Its a shame im only 19 because this is one of the songs id have love to have seen live... R.I.P S.D
I think there's this connection to being young (15-24) and the singers of those times.
That's a given. Add to that the generation that was the "60s" (which went into the wee 70s too), the politics of reform and change that was in the streets of developed nations and you have some kind of glue ready to fix. Now put some big drops of
Sandy Denny in there and the bond is everlasting----and good.
Sadly ... Sandy took the Stairway to the Stars ... all too soon ... how very beautiful she was ... greetings to one and all from Jarrahnut ... in wonderful Western Australia!
A staple in my highschool English classes. Used to have the class listen to Fotheringay - then try and write down the story as they heard it. Yes, of course it took several careful listenings - and some little discussion. But then, that was the point, wasn't it. Hearing her voice makes Life more beautiful each time.
I have always been of the opinion that there was never a finer voice from the English Folk/ Rock scene. Thank you for enshrining Alexandra for all the world to behold.
@mickigoe Just checked SWM and you're right. Apologies - I was sure it was English. The fool should have said English - it's far sexier - the English rose motif etc. British makes her sound like a product of manufacturing industry. Plant was a poor poet !
@SilverWolfMoon I never knew Plant said that about Sandy. As a child I always wondered whos voice that was on Led Zeppelin IV's Battle of Evermore because I loved it so much...definitely the most haunting voice I have ever heard.
I was a university student when this came out. Saw them play live. Listen to the wonderful Fender Telecaster playing of Jerry Donohue. He inspired me to become a professional guitar player. He is even better in 2010 than he was 40 years ago...
I loved her music. It's great to relive it here. I have several of her albums on vinyl. She was truly an amazing talent. Sad she died so suddenly. She had the voice of an angel. Thanks for posting these great photos of Sandy. She will be remembered always by her eternal voice.

Please remember that it's almost impossible
to be an artist and not be difficult...the way we're treated
in this world. Just sayin'.

Sandy Denny was a wondeful vocalist, what an expressive voice, so powerful, best female folk singer ever..and a superb songwriter, what a loss.

Robert Plant said of her voice "The best of all the British girls there ever were"
SilverWolfMoon 1 year ago 2
@SilverWolfMoon Was she not the best of "English" girls acc to Plant. Sorry to be picky.

@mickigoe I read the quote in the sleeve-notes of "No More Sad Refrains", and I've just seen it stated as 'British' elsewhere online :)
