@Byroncoley Well, if it isn't the illustrious BC, the heralded champion of Half Japanese and one of the leading musicologists of our times. Funny, meeting you here.
@Hastiin78 I love Sextant and Crossings, too. On Headhunters, both Sly and Chameleon start smooth and "commercial" sounding, but morph into a new language as the pieces develop. Harvey Mason's inventive drumming really makes it happen. Live versions on YT of Sly with Mike Clark are ok, but they don't even bother to attempt the mid-section played the way it's done here. HH may not scream "experimental" or "far-out," but both of these tracks keep climbing higher until they break the sound barrier
Head Hunters, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever & Weather Report... the cornerstones of the Fusion era following in the footsteps of Miles. Their stuff sounds so fresh compared to the quantized, computer generated, click track dependent electronic instrumental music created today!
I got a set of Yamaha drums, after Harvey let me play his. No other set sounds like whacking on a Yellow Pages Directory. And the root-beer color was the shizzle! Funky? YOU make the call!
@ saanzacs, the drumming is crisp, inventive, energetic, unflagging, wild, controlled. No drummer or band has ever played this way before, or ever again. The strip-down to trio sneak-into the piano solo is unbearable hip. I ask, how did Mason come up with this shit? I only wish this line-up did another record.
Wow, brings back the memories. I studied synthesizer with Dr. Patrick Gleeson, who also introduced Herbie to the synth and taught him. This was recorded at Different Fur Trading Company studio in the middle of SF Mission district. I studied upstairs in Pat's apartment above the studio. Also remember John Viera, studio designer and engineer. Wonder what those guys are up to now. Studer 24 track deck in the control room.

listen to the way herbie's stuttered 8th notes modulate into this outside, hip outside (venusian) insane twists and feels, take you into a hypnotic, trance like state which is the part of him that makes me realize he is the living,Coltrane,Parker, Davis..........loved you from your earliest works !
One of my favorite Herbie Hancock performances. Harvey Mason's drumming on this track is unbelievable. I wish he stayed in this band a while longer. Would love to hear a live version of this tune w/ Harvey. Mike Clark is a great drummer but the live version of this tune w/ him on drums pales in comparison to the studio version w/ Harvey. I guess Harvey was busy doing studio dates. Performances like this along w/ some Mahavishnu albums w/ Billy Cobham inspired me to pursue a drumming career.
@Slamule I always though Mike Clarke's career suffered from bad recording. For some reason Herbie's later albums really sounded awful in comparison to this, not sure why, maybe they used a different producer.
Oh, heavens. I play guitar and wrote some guitar jazz tunes for my band back in '02. We "tried" to cover this live, only once. To this day, the brief interlude at 1:35 clings to the back of my brain. Much love and much respect to Herbie and Co.
@saanzacs Yes! I've always thought (from about 5:25 and on), just amazing! I mean amazing!! What he's doing with everything else, especially hi-hat, cymbal and snare while the bass drum continues with da dut, da dut, da dut, da dut..... continuously! I could see three drummers pulling it off, maybe! Then at 9:30, that gorgeous, mystical music comes in! Such a masterpiece!
top tune thanks............

Let's hear it for Paul Jackson, he's been left out of all the hyperbole here, mainly by me. His bass playing here is white hot perfection.
