  • oh i figured it out,i forgot to hook the hardware interface thing, but i got a question, when u hook the line mixer on, it clips like crazy, cuz it boosts the music up,but the sound cracks a lot,can that be cause of my soundcard?

  • The sample music is awesome, but I'm biased. Sort of drunk, as it happens...

  • @AcePincter Should you always mix relative to other instruments?

  • bigup

  • thank you so much...the part about the guitar and piano competing has been my problem..and i just completed my mix thanks to this video..thank you1

  • thank you so much...the part about the guitar and piano competing has been my problem..and i just completed my mix thanks to this video..thank you

  • thanks a lot!! :)

  • turn the fuckin volume down

  • anyone know what a sphincter is?

  • @tintala hahahah "heyy everybody, this is a...sphincter."

  • @tintala a bumhole

  • Great explanation Ace. The spaghetti in peoples heads become combed like angel hair pasta ;D

  • The music is drowning out his commentary. Well for me anyway, I couldn't hear him.

  • @tonyttt31 pretty sure thats what he was trying to demonstrate bro

  • You should also Lo cut most of your instruments to prevent your speakers trying to boost those levels that anyway is out of the human hearing range.

  • isac hayes disliked this 8 times

  • everyone except isac hayes!!!!! LOL

  • what a pro !!!

  • yes yes yo! nice video bro ...well explained ! And if i may add one thing ....having a reference monitor (speakers) helps a lot....using your everyday wal mart or radio shack speakers with a lot of coloration wont help! Use a speaker that is flat no coloration added! just a tip! EQUING IS FUN

  • hey goober

  • heres my email macedojimmy@yahoo.com

  • Damn, dude love that beat, gotta tell me where i can hear that and more, thats a real beat. get at me, seriously, im in the process of making an album, would love some stuff like that

  • nice1 :D very interesting

  • less means more. if you have a bunch of eq on something, then you might as well re-record it.

  • voice is low compared with the music, cant barely understand, but its useful, thnx.

  • you made that beat? Hella Dope!!!

  • thnx , wish i was smarter so I cld get it.. stick to song writting, hooks n catchy melodies are easier for me

  • Fascinating, thank you.

  • the music it is to loud

i cant hear your voice hen the music is playing

  • thanks man , that was really helpfull

  • Great guide. One thing though:

Human voices are most present between 300 Hz and 3.4 kHz. That's also the frequency range submitted by a telephone at +/-3 dB.

The warmth of a voice resides around 150 Hz, Definition (for understanding language properly) at 400 Hz approx (300 - 500 Hz) and Presence ca. at 3.5 kHz (3 - 6 kHz).

Furthermore: boosting wide, cutting tight, that's right. If you want something to sound *better*, cut. If you want something to sound *fatter*, boost.

    Just some hint.

  • GReat!

  • hey youtube i am AA SPhincter!

  • I hear a turkish sound:d

  • your vids are great! keep it up! I am very greatful!

  • lol "a sphincter"

  • next time you make a video, pause the god damn music when talking, its very VERY hard to focus on what you are saying and fucking unbearable.

    that aside, good tutorial.

  • excellent man

  • VERY WELL DONE! I'm good with EQ but never knew U could get a Wah effect like that. U Da Man!

  • Hi, you should've recorded the output, rather than through your mic. Especially when teaching EQ'ing .. Just a suggestion ;)

  • great tutorial but also great djing tip about the mid range when not playing a full out dance club - ill def have to try that next time, thanks man

  • very informative!!!!!!

  • Better then the Reason class in school!

  • wtf ur school teaches you to use Reason?!?!?!

  • Yes :D

It was a class named "music and computers" or something like that...

All we did for a year was creating music in Reason ^^

Of course we had other classes as well, but for 3 hours every week we sat and produced music!

  • wow dude that is the most awesome thing ever!! for music when i was in school it was playing old rock songs on a plastic recorder -_-

  • Same! What goddamn school do you go to? I'm moving there when I get nippers so my kids can go

  • thanks, very clear tutorial.

  • good tutorial, was there any particular reason you used 2 different EQs? (MClass and 2band)

  • this Guy sounds like tommy chong

  • Thanks. That was real helpful. You gonna go deaf though guy! Haha

  • Cheers!

  • brilliant - thank you sir

  • damn those burps were pretty nasty

  • Thanks so much, separating competing sounds thru EQ-ing was something I was always quite confused over but you explained it really well !

  • yo thats a pretty sick tune.... nice!!!

thax for the video tutorial :D

  • This is THE video I've been searching for. Reason is my weapon of choice but I have always HATED the sound quality. The mastering suite made my music sound fuller and more complete but I always found that the more sounds I added the more murky and muddled my sound got. This is shows me exactly why!!!! Thank you a million times over

  • ace very nice tut this has helped me greatley

AND PEOPLE PLEASE ALL SHUT UP WITH THE DAW vs DAW ! !

Stop stating your personal preferences as facts, its stupid

I can link u 2 dudes with FL and midi controllers, who blow dudes with MPC's, ProTools, Fantoms and Tritons out of the water.

If u knew anything you would know the DAW is irrelivent, and if u dont like it, then thats cool, use somthing else, but dont down talk any DAW. Reaason is complex to start, but effective and i love it

  • Souljah boy tell em.

  • @EssJayBeatz great comment bro

  • @EssJayBeatz Each to their own

Reason 5 is not ever presented as a DAW its presented as a music composition tool. There are infinite ways to make the same thing, whatever suits ur logic best is what you should be using.

  • @EssJayBeatz Real talk reason fo lifee!!

  • @EssJayBeatz thank you.

  • most powerusers in reason came also of asr 10,s or limited hardware,so normal the first sequencer like reason will be dope for them, but major artist aint even fuck ith a program like reason, most powerusers where at their end of their carreer ,

  • fl studio is way better, yeah reaosn has better sounds, but fl you can turn into your own daw by leaving standart shit out, trust me,boombap fans shopuld go to fl studio ,electronic producers should move to reason, you know i know many cats in reason who make hiphop, all share the same sounds and electronic feel,i dont likee reason, nothing beats cubase 5 for real

  • great tute. really helpful unlike other tutes on utube.

  • extremely helpful! thanks a ton!

  • God Reason looks complicated :/

  • yeah it is but once you get it, it's AWESOME

  • naa it´s not more complicated than fruityloops or something...

  • harmonic minor

  • Out of many Reason tutorials, this one was the best. You explained everything well and you were not boring, as the other ones that almost sleep while explaining. 5/5 from me, but one suggestion: Lower the volume of ur speakers just a little bit. It killed my ears at some parts, because of the volume difference between your voice and the speakers. Keep it up:)

  • where cn i get dis coz ive been lukin everywhere for sumfin like dis so i can make my own music plz sumone tell me

  • Any major music store will have it or just go online and shop for the program. Of course you will need an interface to play it but if you go to a store like guitar center they can take you through it if your just beginning.

  • U can downlad Reason from torrent sites.. just tellin' ohh and check my beats out :D

  • whats with the burbin!!! dumb ass

  • Thanks a lot for this light bulb moment tutorial. Will start to use this immediately!

  • Thanks! This is a very good tutorial!

  • what software is this

please help me so i can dwnload ty

  • REASON 4.0

  • Actually he's using Reason 3.0, but get 4.0.

  • Anyone know a clean way to bypass anything above 8 kHz for exemple in reason ?

  • you're best to export your song when finished as a auido file. Import that aiff or wav file into a nn19 or nnxt and just eq that? Another way is add another mixer to your mixer and eq the whole mix?

  • you dont need to bounce the song out mate, just put an eq between the mixer and main ouputs on the "hardware" device. Then eq the whole mix from there :)

  • Get the M Class EQ up, set the frequency on the parametric 1 or 2 to 8k, bringing the gain all the way down to make a big cut, then bring the "Q" all the way up to reduce the bandwidth, thus only cutting 8khz! Try that mate!

  • man, great, but could you make video about mastering on fl?

  • thanks, my music is more smooth now. it used to be hella loud and annoying at times, haha.

  • Very useful. Gotta try those things.

  • Tell your friend he's making a "filter" effect. A flanger throws certain frequencies off by PHASE - which you cannot do with just low mid and high.

However, you can do it by playing two identical records just SLIGHTLY offset in starting time.

  • can you make a flanger effect with dj mixer using low mid and high knobs? im asking cause im having argue with my friend about it.zhanks

  • no you can not. you can make a flanger effect using a flanger, usually the best way to do it

  • Quite useful

  • usefull!!!thx man

  • the guitar still sounds like it's being drowned out :|

  • Absolutely fantastic tutorial. Very helpful! Thanks a lot!

  • Very useful...

Is the name a joke, though?

"Ace Pincter," like "a sphincter." Like a Waynes world joke?

    Anyway. Thanks. Great video.

  • "pretty much everyone besides isaac hayes"

    that made me laugh hahaha

  • and barry white

  • The stuff that this guy is teaching the community is everything from essential to innovative. What are you good for? Smart-ass remarks?

But this video really helped me out. Now I know how to bring out some of those subtle sounds and turn down the noisy ones.

  • you a a total cock deezeebadman....all you ever do is post negative stuff....WHY??

  • EQ like a pro? Pro what?

  • A Pro-ducer?

  • lol

  • lol

  • @AcePincter lol

    tnx, man!

  • @AcePincter Thanks for the clarification (and apologies for the 2 year delay in replying). But seriously, if anyone doesn't know how an EQ works then maybe they should take up something else huh ..

  • Like a pro engineer :D

  • Awesome Ace. Thanks.

    Jeff

  • Good tutorial, good examples! only minus was when the beat was louder than ur voice in the beginning ^^. i agree with both hydlide24(post ur vid now! :P) & dj2bklyn. u dont wanna overdo eq. the most important thing is to listen alot, both to how other artists mix their tracks and to listen to how the eq affects ur own. learn the basics first and ull be skilled in due time, in any craft. true story. pz

  • That was well explained.. thanks a lot

  • Up next; Make YouTube videos like a pro.

  • lol

  • thx 4 the great tut :D

  • Great tutorial !

But what's the difference between the MClass Equalizer and the PEQ-2 ? The first for the piano and the second for the guitar...

  • Mclass EQ has more options, but no inputs on the rear for CV. Typically it is used as a mastering utility, whereas the PEQ2 has more use as an effects device!

  • great video i really liked that opposite eq'ing trick you were using to give the sounds room. ive been suffering with compition in my tracks.

  • As an engineer I was told less is more therefore EQ can over kill a song so be very gentle when you eq sounds also panning can help with seperation to compensate for EQ.

  • Yes, you're pretty much right about that, a lot of people make the mistake of eqing something drastically, the not leaving headroom, and it ends up clipping or just being to loud. Its also usually better to cut the frequencies you dont want and leave the sounds you do and maybe turn it up a tad, than to boost the frequencies you want and leave the ones you dont!

  • Tnx a lot! Great video!

  • nice, but what i miss, is the fact that you EQ every sound apart first, cut the db's that are not essential for your sound, clean up your sounds.

then EQ it as a whole track.

  • Good advice for the people. Thanks!

  • youre the man ace, thanks for the tips.

  • great video.. very helpful for mixing

  • nice track real nice

  • There's a better mixed full version on my website (check the link on my front page. The song is called Hale Noa. YT won't let me post a link here!)

  • But, but -I read that tip in a sound engineer's guide! (I believe it would apply to the individual tracks, not the mix) What, then, do you recommend to solve the problem in this case? My viewers and I would surely like to hear your opinion!

  • great great song

i will subscribe to your channel (Y)

  • Thanks! Reason is Great! also ure Tutorial :)

  • Great Tutorial! That loop reminds me bit of Pulp Fiction

  • Yeah, the twangy fast guitar part. Dick Dale is the musician you are thinking of. All his songs seem to sound like fast, single note surf music. Mine is Hawaiian in origin, so it probably shares some flavor.

  • Great thanks for the time .

  • Thanks for your tutorials.

Love to listend to other people and learn tips and tricks.

    Appreciated!

    From sweden

  • thnx so much for this tutorial, very helpfull

  • Thanks! The EQ has become my favorite effect since working with it a lot.

  • great video man, you've helped me so much thanks. Is there any chance you could do one for the compressors when you get time?

  • fucking wow. This helps alot man, I really appreciate it. Time to check out all your other vids! :D

  • rockable...

can i have a copy of that track it sounds radbad!

  • I've got a quality MP3 on the website listed on my homepage - the song is called "Hale Noa", from the Hawaiian bar where I heard a group play it. It was such a powerful melody, I carried it around in my head for 3 years...

  • Wow, cheers!

I'm in a band with two guitarists and they're constantly arguing about one being louder. Of course, he is louder, but maybe I can do this to them on the sly :)

  • Yes! Have your rhythm guitarist occupy the lower midrange, while your lead guitar should occupy the higher mids and treble. If you only have a 3-band EQ, have your guitarists offset their tone knobs accordingly. This has the same effect as a wide bandpass filter, and should do much to align your guitarists within the spectrum.

  • Neat video. Informative, thanks!

  • True. I demonstrated this in my "Visual Envelopes" tutorial and the "Live Performances" series, so I didn't think I would need to reiterate that! Thanks for the comment though.

  • nice one...good example for seperating instruments which otherwise would drown each other :)

btw... the small eq has the cv ins...

    that is right...

...but with the help of the combinator all units can have almost any sort of cv connection...

    anyway nice tutorial video :)
