Thank you for posting this. I remember this commercial when I was a kid. This is definitely the best version of the song. Wish there was a full version of it somewhere.
Gotta say - 12 years old 1971 - begged quarters to play the original on the jukebox in the local hippy sandwich shop. A good year for rock and roll. Flash forward to 1988 and this is a twisted guilty pleasure - slow and hard and still after midnight. Revisit both in 2011 - it's all good. And a tip of the hat to the great JJ Cale.
He also did this commercial during a relapse into the booze, so it had added controversy. He thought he could be a social drinker and control it - didn't work too well.
that is true. he was an hard core alcoholic. he also was a hard core coke head, but that's not my point dumb-ass. he already could afford any beer/whatever he wanted. he could afford any thing basically. he still sold out.
my parents wanted to kill me back then...i would turn this up to max volume everytime it came on the tv.

Clapton once said in an interview, "I was an alcoholic when I was making those commercials".

@shimokita2 Yeah, but there aren't many alcoholics that do it with beer.

As Far as Sell-outs go this is not that Big.
When the Stones started Pimping for Microsoft that was pretty bad.

WHY ERIC??? The only reason to make a commercial is:
1) To get exposure.
2) To make money. Clapton does not need any of those... I love his music but this it a classic definition of a "sell out".
