i have a question im new to this stuff i just bought a new strong graphics card and someone told me to get this thermal compound and im only going to apply this to my cpu not gpu right? just my processor? and i saw in a lot of videos they spread it out with credit cards..which one is better??
@MrJkalbb yeah but where do u put the compound on gpu or cpu? or both of them? i heard that u can put it on both of them? sorry i dont know much about these things.
@Shadowfury are u a fucking idiot? ive never done this before...so i dont know how to do it and i ask a question and u ask my age? how retarded are u? im 26 fyi. im asking cuz i wanna do it properly. if ur not gonna asnwer my question save your dumb comment to yourself.
@plplove LOLHEMAD. Yup, you're mad. What are you going to do about it bitch? There's lots of tutorials on the internet and youtube here and this guy explained it fairly well. Come the fuck on, I've never learned how to install cpu coolers myself right after I watched this video and it worked like a charm. Not fucking rocket science.
@Shadowfury ud be suprised what the fuck would i do to you if u were being a hoe to my face like this u dumb bitch nerd. internet thugs went live huh..if u aint got nothing good to say stfu..and i wasnt talking to u so u shut ur fucking mouth piece of shit. ur garbage.
@plplove Stfu, ahahaha... you faggot. The only whore here is yourself, that's why you can't learn own your own if you don't study. So what if I'm a nerd? Doesn't mean I'm a fucking faggot pussy like you who's dumb as fuck. Plus I make muuuch more money than you. You don't got shit. LOLOL. Fucking retard.
That's waaaay too much thermal paste. It doesn't have to isolate the CPU, its role is to level out any irregularities and gaps between the 2 surfaces. I would probably use half of that, and make sure the heatsink is tightly mounted against the CPU.
@Shadowjones It seems there's 3523432 different ways to install thermal paste, and all of them seem to keep the darn processor under reasonable temperatures.
After cleaning surfaces of crud and dust, use a razor blade to spread a thin SMOOTH layer on BOTH surfaces, then place a small dab of compound on one surface and slowly bring the surfaces together and fasten the fastener or screws slowly. DO NOT CAUSE BUBBLES! Do everything smooth, and slow... to ensure a -solid paste- not one filled with air bubbles. The spring tension determines final thickness, less viscous means a thicker layer will solidify. - I use lens tissue and alcohol for cleaning.
@soushi8 You only get a super fucking thin amount. Don't believe the hype, a perfect application, thicker than what you have now, spread it with you finger, is much better. The spread you have now is 1/10 of a millimeter and with your finger you'd have 1mm spread all over the cpu, then you add the heat sink. It's just a better seal.
@zomgwtfbbqbagel from what i learned from school too is the rule of thumb in applying thermal paste is a grain of rice should be enough. oh well thnx :D planning on building my bulldozer build once i get paid next week.
@soushi8 A grain of rice is bare minimum. Thermal conductivity is not vulnerable to resistance as much as electricity is even though their conductance is similar. If you have a nice spread throughout the CPU you will have better surface area contact. I'm not saying dab a large amount on there i'm saying add a bit more and spread it perfectly thin without removing any, unless there is some extreme excess, or remove just enough so that there is no seepage from around the heat sink when attached.
@soushi8 I wish I had a way to show you how I personally do it, and have seen definitely 2c - 4c drops on my temperatures with how i apply thermal paste no, from when I would apply thermal paste in the past, which was how you've done here.
@Somethingcrappy The more alcohol the better.. I dunno why so many of these videos state a certain percentage. Even the NCIX one I just watched specifically said "99%", when it's well known 70% is fine. Also, it's debatable, but most professional builders using the center-dot method, go for a grain of rice sized glob, not pea. As I posted elsewhere recently, most good compounds these days are a lower viscosity though, making them easier displaced/harder to get "too much".
@Tinytacohead ok thanks for the info :D And yea I thought pea is kinda too much too, so I only put like 1/4th a pea. Im going to replace the thermal paste because I think I didn't put enough and it didnt cover the whole CPU so my temps are like 75 celcius when on load :/
@Tinytacohead np & yowch, that's pretty hot for a CPU! I just put a ThermoLab Bada on an FX-4100 and while the idle temps seem typically read 35/43 for the two CPU sensors, I've never seen it go past 56c on load either.. (and don't think the fan's even ramping up) so yea, I think I'll just play with fan profiles & leave the cooler be for awhile. good luck!
@LUK3GUN1 Not if everything works, you can download a program such as Coretemp or similar, if the temperatures are within normal ranges idle/load then all is good.
@volound okay if you say it works great then no problem. IMF not doing this job but i just listened french profs advice. Anyway à professional will do that for me, i'll ask him how he makes that.
I remember reading on a paste manufacturers website, for AMD chips you should spread it evenly, as in the first video, and just a dot in the middle and apply heatsink for Intel chips
91% isopropyl alcohol should've been used. 70% leaves a layer of residue. Good job on pointing out that lint free cloth should be used. I actually use this type of lint free paper towel (Viva) that has a stretch rubbery feel to it. Use it once and throw away and it's cheaper than buying lint free towels.
Thanks for this vid, I was planning on upgrading cooler and my only previous experience with installing coolers was with stock coolers that have paste pre-applied, so I didn't know what the best method was
Hi, I was removing my core2duo, and accidentaly I touched the 'pins' (actually not pins, but the bottom of it), I did 'discharge' myself before this and also had my hands clean...
Thanks great video I didn't know how much to apply after having to replace the failed fan in the Tuniq Tower, my system was rebooting but after this video it's running at 25°C!!
Isn't it too much? I am going to do same thing as you but want to know if squeezing it can help if I have applied too much paste, with pea apply tech (that one you just did in the video) I know applying on WHOLE heat spreader is not good because it makes air bubbles and uneven fit, the pea apply tech like you did is best. But, as I said - how do I know it is enough? Maybe try make a video with a transparent thick glass and see how it spreads, with your amount of thermal paste?
@Mixter81 My opinion is that he used a little too much, yes. The recommended way to apply thermal paste for core i7 and many other cpu's is to simply draw a thin line of thermal paste down the centre, around 1mm thick.
This spreads well around the hottest part of the cpu (the center), and is much easier to get consistently right than a 'pea sized amount'
I couldn't find the CPU so I bought 12 tubes of MX3 and smothered it all over the motherboard. I then took 150ml of alcohol and poured it over the motherboard and slightly shook it to evenly spread it. I used a hairdryer to dry it all. I now get 10 to 15 degrees less than before.
@The1126jjk I'm doing my first build now and I will be using your technique. I have half a fifth of Jägermeister in my freezer, which will keep temperatures even lower! :D
@TearsAmongAshes Good luck or I hope it went well. It took me about 6 hours the first time since I was following a guide and some weird parts didn't seem to exist on my motherboard. Then I found out I was missing a SATA cable so I had to wait til the next day to install the OS. Now it only takes an hour or 2.
I didn't appy paste to my cpu, my cooler has paste already so I was told it would be fine.
I accidently smeared some of the paste on my finger, and there is a a small marking exposing the area of the cooler behind the paste, do I need to apply more paste or will in spread ?
@nousername21 it doesnt really matter as long as the heat sink is in full contact and the thermal paste has the whole of the contact area covered it should be ok.
artic silver 5 is hard to wash off your skin. it turned my shlong grey and wont come off! what do you recommend? i know youv j'd off with that shit be4 so lemme in on the secret!
@Sacreppin916 I think you should do about 20 strokes with some 80 grit sandpaper and then use some 70% alcohol to finish polishing it up. That should do it, lolz
@muratveli try ordering some thermal paste and mix it with water. Then get a needle and try injecting it into your veins. Remember to tie tubes or a belt around your arm so your veins pop out.
you applies wayyyyy too much bro,(only a quarter of the amount you put on) another tip is after you spread the paste around with the fan and you are ready to screw the holes in, lift the fan and actually check if you got 90-95% of the area and that there is not the slightest bump
@Tweeter5004 Dude, didn´t you know? All computers are allergic to chicken sandwich, give him some water, and then feed him with a salami sandwich, they love it!
The only bad thing about this video is that he applied to much thermal compound. You should only use approximately the size of an uncoocked grain of rice.
That's fucken stupid spreading it with the heatsink chances are won't spread even thru out the chip an likely spill on the outer edge of the chip.
It's better to just apply a dab of paste and use a plastic card to evenly apply it to the chip in the plastic holder it came with.. If you do it while on the motherboard you can easily mess up and smear it on the metal latch
@t0k3z420 Thermal paste doesn't need to spread to every corner, and doing it this way reduces air bubbles that you would get if you just spread it around with a card then apply the heatsink. This is the preferred way. Although, I've read that it's supposed to be the size of an uncooked piece of rice, not a pea.
@t0k3z420 The reason it comes with it shaped in a square, is because it's easier to ship it like that. Some coolers also ship without preapplied thermal compound, but whit it in a tube instead so you can apply it yourself.

@xBigWill94 Yes you can. Also, when screwing the heatsink/waterblock down, make sure to screw each screw evenly. So for example, screw each one by 1/2 a turn until they are all screwed in. This way will ensure the thermal compound is spread evenly.
what about with a laptop. i cant seem to find the cpu on my laptop mainly because i cant get the bottom off. do you know how to get it off for the sattelite a505 series? there are no videos or guides for it
hi can someone tell me i just took apart my laptop and it back together now and running fine but i replaced the old crusty thermal stuff in between the heat sink and the cpu with arctic silver 5 and there was a very light green pad of thermal Greece i think its called on another platform on the heat sink to the right of the cpu platform i replaced that with arctic silver 5 too and i was wondering was i supposed to do that???? please someone help
@Zinthius22 Im hoping that was sarcasm. But odds are either 1. you didn't line up the tabs or 2. The socket type of the CPU didn't match the Motherboards.
Do what he says not what he does. Apply a pea size, not a broad bean size. That stuff is conductive, if it overflows and makes a connection somewhere it could go badly lol.
@Cuthofa HDT coolers are weird though theres little valleys in between the heatpipes that can just take in all the thermal compound and not let it spread as well. I prefer to spread it by hand with a ziplock bag on my finger like tjharlow.
bro...i just buy a new one heatsink and mount it but i didn't remove the old termal paste from cpu...is that good?or is there any problem comeout?tell me please....
my AMD Athlon X2 64 5600+ (2.8Ghz, NOT OVERCLOCKED) idles between 57-62c and 110~120c when playing games (yes, it's true. until it shuts down by itself afterwards).. I checked the CPU slot on the mobo and there is a black stain and there's a burnt pin on the processor.. However, it is still working though and I'm using it right now. The consequence however is I cannot play games anymore. Is buying another heatsink like Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme is would solve my temp problem?
@baskal002 It might be that some of the compound leaked onto the mobo and caused the burn you talked about. What I'd try to do is remove the heatsink, than clear the compound and apply it again but a slightly smaller amount. Than run it and see if there is any difference (it might just be that you have applied so much compound that i's boiling instead of transmitting heat) if it works than voila. If it doesn't than changing the heatsink probably won't help.
OMG!!!! I wish I had watched this before I had apply a mess of thermal paste everywhere; lets just say their wont be a next-time with using that bottle of Thermal Paste (YES i did apply ALL of the thermal paste to the CPU because im a NOOB). This result in Glitching on my screens and now I have to replace my CPU, CPU Cooler, and the Motherboard. Great tutorial though!

@emreforum1 if the surface of the thermal compound is uneven and has pits and hills, this allows bubbles to form. spreading it manually is stupid.
if you understand basic physics, its obviously stupid to spread the thermal compound manually.
the sink and cpu should be as close as possible, ideally they should be fused.
the gap between them should be filled completely with thermal compound

@Sacreppin916 I think you should do about 20 strokes with some 80 grit sandpaper and then use some 70% alcohol to finish polishing it up. That should do it, lolz

we got te same cpu mine cost 350 euro but cant find thermal paste..
ALEXAMify 5 months ago
Is that stuff toxic?? I mean if I taste some of it, should I go see a doctor??
muratveli 5 months ago
@muratveli try ordering some thermal paste and mix it with water. Then get a needle and try injecting it into your veins. Remember to tie tubes or a belt around your arm so your veins pop out.
TheNiceguy1212 5 months ago 2
can u use shit rather than thermal stuff?
sigmund1966 5 months ago 3
how come for some sockets e.g. LGA1155 have the pins in the motherboard rather than the CPU? is it more efficient this way or something?

What should I do if I get my penis caught in the cpu socket?
p.s. I'm bleeding :(
NoxSec 5 months ago
@NoxSec Then you should change your name to NoSecx. ;o)
Madmanden 5 months ago
you applies wayyyyy too much bro,(only a quarter of the amount you put on) another tip is after you spread the paste around with the fan and you are ready to screw the holes in, lift the fan and actually check if you got 90-95% of the area and that there is not the slightest bump

@Tweeter5004 Dude, didn´t you know? All computers are allergic to chicken sandwich, give him some water, and then feed him with a salami sandwich, they love it!

@Tweeter5004 That doesn't make sense.
The PC would still work.
yackemflamber 5 months ago
The only bad thing about this video is that he applied to much thermal compound. You should only use approximately the size of an uncoocked grain of rice.
MYsterYmarcus 5 months ago 2
Is that really all you need or do you have to spread it on the processor
chikenfriedricey 5 months ago
@chikenfriedricey
No, you shouldn't spread it. You get the best cooling if you do it like in this video. Just put it on the cpu as shown, and put the cooler on.

I overclocked my i7 to 4x 8,2 Ghz, why isn't it working anymore?
MeCanFlyVeryHigh 6 months ago 2
That's fucken stupid spreading it with the heatsink chances are won't spread even thru out the chip an likely spill on the outer edge of the chip.
It's better to just apply a dab of paste and use a plastic card to evenly apply it to the chip in the plastic holder it came with.. If you do it while on the motherboard you can easily mess up and smear it on the metal latch
t0k3z420 6 months ago
@t0k3z420 Thermal paste doesn't need to spread to every corner, and doing it this way reduces air bubbles that you would get if you just spread it around with a card then apply the heatsink. This is the preferred way. Although, I've read that it's supposed to be the size of an uncooked piece of rice, not a pea.
tolman33 6 months ago
@t0k3z420 Then why do heatsinks come pre applied with an even square
t0k3z420 5 months ago
@t0k3z420 The reason it comes with it shaped in a square, is because it's easier to ship it like that. Some coolers also ship without preapplied thermal compound, but whit it in a tube instead so you can apply it yourself.

just a little warning make sure you dont put a compound on pins or CPU back when you take your CPU heatsink (more a problem with ... a AMD CPU )
reviewpaintball911 6 months ago
damn i dont think i can do that with my corsair h50 :/
xBigWill94 6 months ago
@xBigWill94 Yes you can. Also, when screwing the heatsink/waterblock down, make sure to screw each screw evenly. So for example, screw each one by 1/2 a turn until they are all screwed in. This way will ensure the thermal compound is spread evenly.

@KingKoldof well duuuh, i mean like the inside of it? o.o
DisneyxFan1 6 months ago
@DisneyxFan1 you apply the thermal paste onto the socket pins then directly screw the heatsink onto the pins corner first

BluegrassFilmsKY 6 months ago
@Zinthius22 Im hoping that was sarcasm. But odds are either 1. you didn't line up the tabs or 2. The socket type of the CPU didn't match the Motherboards.

Do what he says not what he does. Apply a pea size, not a broad bean size. That stuff is conductive, if it overflows and makes a connection somewhere it could go badly lol.

That is WAY too much paste. You can safely use a quarter of that or less.
Cuthofa 7 months ago
@Cuthofa HDT coolers are weird though theres little valleys in between the heatpipes that can just take in all the thermal compound and not let it spread as well. I prefer to spread it by hand with a ziplock bag on my finger like tjharlow.

Isn't that too much?

my AMD Athlon X2 64 5600+ (2.8Ghz, NOT OVERCLOCKED) idles between 57-62c and 110~120c when playing games (yes, it's true. until it shuts down by itself afterwards).. I checked the CPU slot on the mobo and there is a black stain and there's a burnt pin on the processor.. However, it is still working though and I'm using it right now. The consequence however is I cannot play games anymore. Is buying another heatsink like Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme is would solve my temp problem?
baskal002 7 months ago

YankiEBubbAAussiE 7 months ago
@YankiEBubbAAussiE That's a GG, you probably used enough thermal paste on 1 cpu for an entire small comp stores worth of cpu's lol.
CatalystDestiny 7 months ago
What if there is some thermal compound on the cpu do you use the same procedure to remove it?
