Wini Shaw I saw at a revival of "Lullaby in Broadway" number in Manhattan in 1972 and she looked good and answered questions. But she died in 1973. She was not young in the 30s and was relegated to parts usually opposite the older Warren William. Wini had been a singer in the 20s on Broadway and like so many other Warners stars disappeared. Obviously, Wini returned to New York at least to live/
I used to wonder what the title of this film meant: "In Caliente". It was referring to a very upscale resort in Mexico, which people in Southern California could easily drive to. Agua Caliente's appeal was that liquor was available (during Prohibition in the USA) and gambling was legal (which was still illegal everywhere in the USA at the time).
Then a new political regime took over in Mexico and shut the place down, just before this film was released.
I'm glad Judy Canova's bit wasn't cut as someone suggested. In real life Judy was sophistcated, she knew what she was doing & her comedy made a lot of people laugh, Don't put her down as a dumb hillbilly. I've not seen the Demarco team showcased in such an extended eye-pleasing number. Thanks for posting! I've downloaded this whole clip as a classic keeper.
Oh brother, those daring gowns on the chorus gals - cut right down as low as possible in back, and with see-through lace that shows the cleavage in front...even on Judy Canova!
P.S. Judy - don't waste your time on Edward Everett Horton. He's not interested in girls.
Judy Canova, one of America's forgotten treasures. She was a big star in the forties and fifties but seems to have been forgotten. "Sis Hopkins" was wonderful. So sad. I love Judy Canova
What ever happened to subtlety and discretion? The DelMarcos are so graceful, they put to shame the bumping, humping and grinding of contemporary choreography.
Much romance and charm is generated by the enthralling exhibition dance team Tony and Sally DeMarco. In Gold Diggers of 1935 Warners used Ramon & Rosita in a spot (Lullaby of B'way). In Born to Dance, M-G-M used Georges & Jalna (Easy to Love). Few ballroom teams on film were given such an expansive spot as the DeMarcos got in this film.
One thing that struck me is that this is a rich,'high society' crowd that is shown in a happy, positive light. Anyone who is rich in modern films is almost always the villain or shown in a negative manner.
What if MGM made a mistake and got the wrong Judy to star in "Wizard of Oz"...couldn't you imagine how she'd do "Over the Rainbow"? Glad they got the right Judy for that!!!!
Busby Berekely was a true pioneer. The very first to make camera movement and imagery as big a part of a film's choreography as the dance numbers themselves. It is true art.

Just bought the "In Caliente" DVD. Charming movie. Love Deloris Del Rio. Beautiful woman. Edward Everett Horton at his best.
The Judy Canova piece was a real hoot. Never heard of The DeMarcos but their dance routine was excellent.

What happened to Winifred Shaw´s career after these films from the mid-thirties? I think she was a very good singer.

Great rendition of THE LADY IN RED by Wini Shaw. I never knew she sang this catchy tune until now. Thank you!

Wow! Wini Shaw!
This is only the second film I've seen her in,
the other being 'The Lullaby of Broadway'.
Hollywood does not make films like this anymore.
One thing that struck me is that this is a rich,'high society' crowd that is shown in a happy, positive light. Anyone who is rich in modern films is almost always the villain or shown in a negative manner.

It happened in those days, too: witness "You Can't Take It With You."
This movie is "In Caliente," First National Pictures, from 1935. Pauline Kael liked this number.
