@tanio12 Native Americans were pressured into adopting the white culture which included slavery, however the "traditionalists" were violently opposed to the concept. The whites handpicked Indian leaders who were half white and helped to put down any discord from the traditionalists. It was the mixed raced Indians who became slave holders and who signed away Indian land not realizing that in the end, their father's greed would sacrifice them as well.

3 out of my 4 Great Grandmother's were Cherokee descendants. They intermarried with white settlers and the families are still in their homelands in north Alabama. To hide their Indian ancestry, they were known to the town folks as "Black Dutch". You didn't want it known you were of native descent in the early 1800's.

@jahkiainc There are still Cherokees who look native. The eastern band in North Carolina still have full-blooded Cherokees. But yeah, back in the 1700's and 1800's there were a lot of Cherokees who married into white families. We have to remember that the Cherokees were the most advanced tribe, they lived in houses etc. and a lot married Appalachian whites.
