I was there! i wasn't watchin it on tv, i really was there! my dad goes there every year, im going again this year, its much more fun when you are there then when you are watchin it on TV...... :)
These cars only have 600hp but hit 230MPH (370kph) at Indy, that gives you some perspective on how little downforce they are using compared to F1, they are pushing it to the limit on grip on every corner just for speed on the straights
@sammieboj F1 has become so boring since the V10-era ended. Nowadays IndyCar is much more fun to watch, I like the variety with both ovals and road courses, and the tickets are much cheaper lol. F1 is all about money, IC still let talents drive. Take F1 driver Maldonado for example, he sucks, but Williams keep him around because he has some south american oil sponsor that gives the team a shit load of money. I started watching NASCAR this year, and I have to say it's currently better than F1.
@sammieboj Yeah, but we're talking about good racing. i.e--passing, side-by-side action, and overall close racing. If it were a competition of over-priced, overrated, and unexciting racing, F1 would take the cake; no doubt.
So the reason all but 6 drivers race had nothing to do with the fact their poor little tyres couldn't handle 12 little degrees of banking at two thirds of the speed of what the IndyCar drivers do? I must have been watching a different race, as in my one, about 35-40% of the oval is used...
@WilVincent88 thats is why indy cars are designed around this dumb ring raceways... i dont see any indy car doing shit in a circuit so you have no point. About the tires, you still have no point because theres a million different tire options for each race, meaning the poorly designed road course in indy couldnt allow that race
Im a huge NASCAR fan, but im starting to get into openwheel racing, and im still learning about it all. IRL and F1, at first i wasnt into it very much, but its actually pretty cool. I dont know why people diss this stuff. its some good racing sometimes.
@Tyler83Mr Indi500 , monaco grand prix and Le mans 24h are considered the 3 greatest motoring events in a year, even though i personally dont like this track
@Tyler83Mr Monaco may be historic but there's barely any overtaking, at least you get it in indy. Still though I do agree with you on monza and spa, and a few other classics.
@struckar86 you are incapable of understanding how big of a challenge this can be, i bet you dont know much about racing, you think nascar is stupid too? i bet your into that drifting, but its cool, theres nothing wrong with that as you grow more knowledge of motorsports then you will understand how it not just left turns, don't be superficial. Dont you think about what the drivers are enduring, your senses at 100% for so many laps, plus all the mechanical aspects, gas tire wear Indy racing=SMART
@Pedrohksgreddyturbo someone has obviously never seen a race where there is more than a left turn, if you want fast cars and true racing f1 is the place to go, granted these guys have to endure high g's but thats it, be honest you only watch it for the crashes, i mean look how LITTLE amount of people were in the crowd then look at an F1 grand prix, point proven

@96texan It is. ever since Tom Carnagie retired, this guy took over and just ruined the commentary. He just likes to hear himself talk because he repeats everything like 4 times
"IT AINT OVER UNTIL YOU PASS THE CHECKERED FLAG" i love endings ;like this send shivers up the spine if he pulled it off it would be the same as Trevor Bayne winning daytona 500
How can a rookie possibly be upset to go run there first Indy 500, get to start 12 in front of competitive teams like Briscoe, Castroneves, and any Andretti car, get rookie of the race, get to lead, and finish on the podium!?!?!?.... Like that.......
@AlexMacIsKING ndy your first or its nothing. to have it soo close and make a mistake like that he will be kicking his own ass for years to come. but i do agree with you it was an amazing drive and if he would have won it he earned it.
@recked14 They set it up so it seems exciting. NASCAR purposefully throws a caution with 6 laps to go every race, making the first 99% of it meaningless and setting up a GWC. I realized this 3 years ago and after 16 years as a diehard fan, I quit watching.
@recked14 haha No other race will compare to Indy. Ever. The fact that Nascar kept the green flag out when Earnhardt Jr. was leading is a joke. Too bad he couldn't win with Nascar's help, both National Guard cars bit the dust that day. One of the best Indy 500's I have ever seen, amazing. It never disappoints.

looked like a decent race. i was at work so i missed it. but im glad i caught the highlights at least. congrats to dan wheldon, he has an amazing record at the indy 500.
Okay, i posted my comment before finishing watching the video. Mike King, are you kidding me? You are the voice of IMS Radio, you are the conductor of all the reporters, AND YOU DONT KNOW WHO WAS RUNNING 2ND??? YOU TOTALLY BLOW THE FINAL HALF MILE OF A 500 MI RACE........
Seriously, the racing was fantastic, Dave Colabro and Mike King were great. But really, if you dont know what venue this is (RUSTY W.) or dont know what corner you're talking about (its not hard, there are only 4), then its time to hang up the microphone. I know its 'heat of the moment' comintating, but i could do a better job. But i dont have a degree in journalism.
Remember some names...Kevin Cogan, Scott Goodyear, Michael Andretti...J.R. Hidebrand. He will live with this one until he wins Indy, or until the end of his days, whichever comes first. And he will never have the chance to be a rookie who won Indy again. But the question remains, HOW, WHY, WHY, WHY? Why did he have to go up high, why did he have to pass a lapped car in THE LAST CORNER. People say Indy was exciting this year. I saw it as disappointing, sad and non-sensical.
@gurlsingerfan, yes, JR was the driver behind the wheel, fault totally lies on his shoulders. But here is another equally important question. Why didn't Kimball's spotter in T3 tell him to take the warm-up lane before JR got to them? Seriously, why not take the warm up in 3 even, much less turn 4 when you got a leader behind you, and you're 50 mph off the pace. There was no reason for Kimball to be there. But if i were JR, and i know i had a 3-4 second lead, i'd have lifted between 3 and 4
@kgb474 It is true that Kimball could not have been in a worse place at a worse time for the leaders to come up on him, and he was going surprisingly slow to be on the race line and the leaders coming up behind him on the last lap. It is also true that drivers had been going too far up the track all day at this corner. This should have meant that Hildebrand would have had all the warning not to go high here. The big difference: Hildabrand had a race to win or lose. :-(
@gurlsingerfan I guess we could say 1 rookie + 1 rookie at closing lap = major missed opportunity. But I was rooting for J.R., I guess that is why I was disappointed, (I wasn't beating up on him, even if it sounded like it, I was playing the WHY game (which in auto racing is often somewhat pointless. oh well, better luck to him next year. :-)
If there was an apron then Kimball could have easily have ducked in there and JR would have won it..bring it back! But still that would have been just another 500 finish, this on the other hand is one of the 500 finishes ever! Congratulations to Wheldon, Herta and Schmidt. Also MAKE WHELDON A FULL TIME DRIVER!!!
