If we really want to reduce healthcare costs, the best thing to do is collectively live healthier lifestyles, not smoke or do drugs or eat junk food all day, and exercise. If more Americans did those things then there wouldn't be as much demand for healthcare, and the costs would go down. The last thing we need is tax-funded healthcare that can be used by people who don't even at least attempt to live healthily, those leeches will drain the system and GREATLY increase the deficit.

Why is it that, here in Canada, my wife gave birth, my father had a stroke and my grand-mother had 2 heart attacks and we did not have to pay a cent for the hospitalization, the operations and the cares???? Maybe because we Canadians are no longer paranoid with communism(socialism)...Or maybe, we are not as greedy and don't mind paying for others (ultimatly us and our loved ones) or maybe we are not as selfish and hypocrite and are more grounded with real life, not the American myths.

All that socialism does is decrease the quality of healthcare for all, while putting unelected bureaucrats in power of our health concerns. @happosai27 I have a personal story about what your talking about. My mother had been sick for many years with a blood disorder that effected her heart. There is no cure for it. As the condition advanced, her blood carried less and less oxygen to every part of her body, causing sudden and extreme weakness. One thanksgiving she fell and broke her hip.  She was dieing from the blood disorder, we all knew that, having 6 mos on the outside. They did the surgery and shortened her time by 3 mos.

@happosai27 What do you think happens in the US, when you don't have the money or private insurance to pay the dentist? They won't even see you in an emergency. They'll send you to the nearest emergency room in some hospital (at tax payer expense, and ER care costs 10 times as much as regular care), and you know what happens then? They'll give an Rx for some pain pills and send you out the door.

as an American who has lived in Germany for the last 8 years, the social system of America (in general, not only health care) is one of the main reasons why I hesitate to come back. thank you MM for showing the Americans the truth, its so hard to get the typical American who has never seen live outside of the states to understand exactly how America stands in the world
