Oh, it's extinct alright. This was a coastal shark species, so it'd have been impossible for them not to be detected.

Likely pushed out of its niche in the ecosystem by the evolution of the killer whale. (who are pretty much the current top predator, and who would have certainly eaten juvie and maybe even adult megalodons. Seeing as how they'll eat adult great white, and adult whales.)
