His agent should have told him it wasn't Shakespeare. Truth be known, his weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth was probably because his fiancee had found out he was still married to two other women.
I've been a fan of Proby's singing for many years. I haven't read any of his interviews, & I know nothing with regards to his drinking habits. Nor, do I care. For me, it has always been about the amazing voice. Proby has always been all about being "over the top." At least it seems that way to me. His singing style is powerful, filled with angst and much melodrama. The gestures? Yes, over the top, and I love it. If it weren't "over the top" it would be Proby.
I didn't like the hand jesters either but OMG what a voice! He didn't act drunk to me...he is just a litle OTT sometimes. He needed some professional coaching on that. Seems like he would have been told not to do that.
@Janette3621 Of course he was drunk - the question is how drunk. He was never sober. As for coaching on his moves, no one could ever tell him anything. He's smarter than everyone else. Just ask him. He's never done anything wrong and all his failures are the fault of everyone else. Just ask him.
PJ Proby and his promoters call it duetting with Jack Daniels. He says the music bigwigs conspired against him because of his "sexual image" or sometimes it's because of jealousy or politics. That's one or three of his stories. He has a million of 'em! He's supposed to have stopped drinking but his attitude's the same.
Was PJ Proby auditioning for Hamlet or was he just sloppy drunk? Those hand jesters are OTT weird. This record wasn't a hit because it didn't appeal to record buyers. Teens and 20-somethings didn't want to hear a guy on a crying jag. It might have done better in 1965 when he still had some fans but by 1968 their taste had changed.
He parts his audience as though they were a curtain and gracefully makes his way on to the stage, his face is full of sadness and uncertainty, his heart is breaking, he looks like he's lost everything and yet he's trying to smile though it all. He pours out his heart & soul and then he bows his head in dispair.
Wonderful acting, or was he for real.
I love this song, it makes me emotional every time I hear or see him singing it.

Proby was an amazing singer who knew how to really deliver a song. Love the ballads he did as well as the uptempo stuff.
Cheers for posing this.
