  • Good job, man!

  • AMAZING...would be cool if i can get a tab

  • Wild cook...

  • i just bought an ibanez btb 6 string. your video was very useful thanks

  • I really like this. Good job.

  • I first came across this video about a year ago and every month or so I find myself typing bass song 1 into youtube to just hear that starting riff again. People would pay to hear your music.

  • wow, normally i dont like tapping, but this rox!

  • good job dude!

  • Can you hear drumming in the backround?

  • kick ass piece, very cool! \m/

  • who said "guitar is better than bass" bass is like ten times cooler dude i like the fretless bass cool!

  • No worries thanks for the kind words! The basses do look similar, I love the natural finished look. Thanks again for all the kind words!

  • Are you using improvised solos?

  • do you think it's the same bass?

  • great!

  • I really enjoyed this. Great job!

  • nice. you're one of the only other people i've seen actually use those tapping chords for a song instead of just soloing

  • first part is simply awesome...

    you own that shit!

  • simply amazing!

  • fretless??

  • why ? ?

  • Dont compare this man to victor wooten.

All musicians have different upbringings and influences which makes the world of music so diverse, if we all compared to one musician we would have no diversity as we all aim to be like them.

  • Well Said.

  • This reminds me of a pattern I got from Victor Wooten.

  • To me since Ibanez uses Bartolini for the BTB pickups, it really brings a more professional aspect to the instrument. I own a BTB 456 6 string and since the day I got it I just can't put it down I am really happy I did not buy any first BTB models with Ibanez pickups.

  • this guy is playing much more than just dead notes to the rhythm like victor does - he plays the notes he hits, unlike victor who use a lot of dead notes to make the rhythm (just making myself clear).

victor didnt invent everything you know... if someone taps it doesnt mean he stole it from victor. and if he plays fast it doesnt mean he learned that from john myung etc etc etc

The world is not spinning around victor's b-ass.

  • ben mon vieux, c'est vachement bien!!!

  • and i also give to him 5 stars so well what the hell

  • wtf is the fucking connection between this and victor?!

cant a man do a fucking thing without being compared to victor?

i get it, you like him, you worship him, you sacrifice small animals for him.. and still.. you dont have to come up with hes name in every bass video that exists in this small hosting site called youtube.

    oh and resonantdog you rock.

  • i didnt say nothing bad about it please but if you just ear what hes doing you can relate to their influences and it is nothing bad about it me miself im a fan of victor and also hes tapping teccnique its exactly the same though hes ussing the same order of notes to do the tapping arpeggios also a little bit whit the rythym you just have to open your fucking ears

  • wow man so nice!

  • LOVELY

  • yes that is clearly "a simple bass song" !! - it was awesome!

  • that was fucking sweet nice job

  • someone has been studing victor wooten good i like´it

  • as if victor is the only bassist soloing and tapping...

  • ok i know but if you have a little of commun sennse and you ear the tone the pharsing of this guy and when did he uses all of this i think you can know what influences did this guy have in fact he is ussing the same tapping patern of victor wooten to do the arpegios whit the tapping and i say that i was a nice job so dont be a dumb ass ftfrito

  • Astonishing ! Great ! And I finally got my answer on getting a Ibanez BTB, it just sound unbelievable ! I'm on my butt !

  • lindo

  • I didn't even notice that was your kitchen in the backgroung, I was ipnotized by your fingers and the music coming from them and maybe also for the warm yellow light atmosphere :)

  • One word...AWESOME!!!

  • How hard are you pressing the strings?

  • what bass do you prefer; ibanez sr prestige or btb? I am just about to buy a new bass and I was wondering if the extra inch on the btb makes a big difference.

  • I retract the question...i've started tabbing

  • WOW!

I have seen this video in the past but it amazed me again.

You got a tab for the first 2 phases? =P

  • one of the best solos i´'ve seen congratulations ,master

  • You got more music happening in 2 minutes than most guys with a contract get out in a whole CD. Amazing...

  • simple! Me begs 2 differ man, thats insane bass playing XD

  • that was great! perfect! bah and you my next bass, Ibanez btb:P keep playing!

  • wow....just wow...

    man, that's epic....

  • lol

  • r u using piccolo strings? it sound great man!!!

  • Thanks!

I am not using Piccolo strings on this, although I can see why you ask as it seems to have a brighter tone.

    The section with the Fretless however is using a higher tuning, E A D G C, instead of the standard B E A D G tuning.

Thanks again to everyone for all the comments and support!

  • Awesome tune bro!!! Love the solos!!!! Keep it up!! Really inspiring!!! Peace ~Gunnar

  • Thanks! This tune really is more about the solos than the comp, as it was all done in one session.

Thank you for your support and kind words!

  • Very, very nice.

  • Very nice but I agree with wistfane. It could just be my personal taste but I really enjoy it when a musician really signifies his material. I think that is that art of it. Great Job.

  • that's awesome man, great playing

  • could someoane tell me waht tuning he uses in

with the 5 string bass ?

  • Thanks,

The 5 string fretless is tuned EADGC but I usually play with a low B. Just thought I'd try something different.

  • thanks :)

  • greattttttttt

  • maight u r amzing however....

it sounds al ittle boring you need some hook or osmething to latch onto which makes it memorable...

like the birdland motif or something. you know make it memorable

  • Amazing!!!!!

  • I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this. A great, interesting tune. A great Bassist! Keep it up. Are your CDs out yet??

  • is there any way i could get an MP3 of this song?

    honestly, absolutely amazing stuff.

  • look for a youtube mp3 recorder, i kno wit's out there

  • damn, you have any transcriptions for this song anywhere?

  • My father uses the finger tapping method too, and as much as I love my father's compositions, this bass song you created is very unique. Keep the songs coming. Thanks-

  • wondefull

  • your work is beautiful and highly influential. this is truely amazing and music/art. PLEASE, keep up this great work and i'll be looking for you in the music stores someday.

  • Great taping skills :)

  • yep, he knows his way around a tape recorder alright

  • Woohoo!

I got it today (my Ibanez BTB556MP)...Man it's SWEET!

I see and hear how you do things, it's well easy to play and sounds sweet.

I'm an already existing 6-string player but I believe many could benefit from this bass going to 6-string.

  • Awesome, I'm glad you like it.

I know what you mean about it easy playbility, good action, good pickups and it's not too neck heavy.

I also agree about the benefits of a 6 string. It's a whole nother beast and it makes 4 and 5 string basses feel easier when switching back.

  • Got that right, but from now on I must stick to 6-string. I can't do the same stuff on a 4 anyways and 5-string feels half there.

Dunno why but having this bass for two days now my playing has skyrocketed! The Low-B is under good tention too so slapping is great cause the Low-B stays quiet unless you touch it. No more vibrating from shock.

6-string is indeed a whole different bass. The approach is different. This Ibanez is way better than my Peavey 6-string although I like that too. :-)

  • It's a tight bass.

Hey what kind of Peavy are you using, I hear good things about the Cirrus.

My first bass was a Peavy Foundation, not bad but BTB's are better.

  • Not a Cirrus. I think that would be better than the Ibanez due to it's price. I've never seen a Peavey Cirrus BXP 6-string so I figure the only one you can get are for over £1000.

The Peavey I was using before getting this awesome TIGHT bass was a Peavey Grind BXP.

Not a bad bass but some build flaws such as a couple of slighlty raised frets (happens on many instruments tho) and the sound was naturally woody, due to it's dense wood construction.

    I'm making it fretless soon.

  • A grind has nothing to compare to a BTB. This is an awesome bass greatly crafted and the sound is incredible.

  • Due try the new BTB 676 its a pretty sweet bass im still looking for somewhere to get 556 though but they were discontinued so hold on to that baby for life itll be worth quite a penny someday

  • i got my btb556 on ebay. its my first 6 string so it was a little strange at first, but its such a nice bass when you get a feel for it. on mine the action is perfect and the eq allows you to get a huge range of sounds.

    i love it!

going back to a 4 string now feels like im playing a bass with a pencil for a neck!

  • The BTB556 is harder to find these days, being out of production for s few years but it's worth it.

All BTB's are good though and the recent ones are through necks.

I love my BTB556, it's my main 6-string but recently I have been playing 4-string as well...feels odd if you've been playing a 6-stringer on the same day but still, 4-string skills are valuable too.

The 4-string is a Yamaha RBX270 but it's heavily modded with DiMarzio's, BassLines and a Hipshop Bass Xtender.

  • amazing playing man you are a god how are you tuned for this song?

  • Thanks,

This song is actually just standard tuning, BEADGC

Good old Bead GC as I seldom say.

  • BTW, is that 5-string Fretless a Tobias?

  • I think its the gary willis signature ibanez

  • It sure is.

The Gary Willis model that is.

  • I extend my hand.

This is how bass should be played.

  • I just can't understand man, you're literally one of the greatest bass players I've ever heard. And I've heard more than one person should in a lifetime, lol.

  • Oh hell yeah!

My kinda playing! Sounds so sweet I think I'm gonna go ahead and buy that bass! The newer one has taken over it and it's harder for me to find it but I have.

Just one question as I had not the chance, how well does it balance with a strap?

  • Thanks!

The bass balances pretty well, it's light and the horn is long enough so it doesn't neck dive too much. The best thing would be to try it, but I've found it's a great instrument for the price!

  • Thanks man, I tried one a year or so ago, also tried the BTB406QM when that was available in this country as my first ever bass tutor played one.

I never got to try it with a strap tho so that's good to hear, my Peavey is neck heavy. It's fine standing up but sitting down is a pain cause of it.

I'm gonna buy it next month I think.

    Cheers. :-)

  • Hey man, I bought a GWB1 and one of the reasons was because of what I heard Jim doing with his. This bass is the best I've ever had and I've been playing for 20 years. I got it on Ebay for 1200. You won't be disappointed.

  • Way cool.

  • Is that the BTB 556?

  • very nice :)

  • it starts just the same like 2girls1cup song xD

no but its a very cool song, i like stuff like that! you are a pretty talented bass player and i like your improvisation in the other vids!

  • how do you get your fretless to sound like a fretless? I just got a fretless and i can't get that hardcore fretless tone. i want mine to sound like yours when you start playing at 1:40. any tips would help GREAT VID

  • What kind of fretless do you have? To get a classic Jaco tone, use only your bridge pickup and turn the treble/tone down to half or even less. Often people use a little bit of chorus and reverb to get a Continuum type of sound. For strings use roundwound not flatwound, they wear on the fingerboard more but have more overtones.

  • that deserved more than 5 stars. fantastic vid i like ur style

  • thanks man, I think you're an awesome bassist and I wanted to say thay you perpetuated my urge to buy upgrade from a BTB 5 to a BTB 6, thanks for sounding as great as you man

  • man.. you are good

  • I just have to ask, what kinda strings are you using on your BTB and what effects and computuer programs are you using?

  • The strings are Elixir,(a couple months old). The signal from the bass during recording is run through an EBS multicomp. I am using Ableton Live 7 to record and for VST's I'm using an assortment, mostly EQ, Compression, and Reverb. I think the solo had a bit of overdrive and an envelope filter that is stock in Ableton.

  • Wow. Extremely technically advanced, and you have an awesome feel throughout the whole song, especially the song! Amazing man. Not many can do that.

  • wow so far this is the only btb i heard that i liked! awesome tone, and playing AS ALWAYS

  • wow, amazing stuff!

  • Wow... impressing stuff, even if I'm not into jazz. How much of that was improvised?

    Btw. nice kitchen :D

  • i like that sonq and it would be so cool to hear it with a band ^^

    keep the qreat work !

  • ............dude that song is sooooooo sweet if you made a cd i would buy it

  • Cheers! One of my goals is to get a cd out of this kinda stuff. Easier said then done, but it's in the works.

    Thanks again!

  • what's stopping you. make it happen man. you're stuff is staight hotness. i wish you lived in the ATL.

  • I would buy your CD in a second man. Good luck with it!

  • FRICKING AWESOME!!!

    IS IT A ZEBRA...

    u are quite amazing..

I used to be a virtuoso in my

    time early 70's

    keep it up

    Papi...out

  • How do you have the EQ set on your bass man? I've been playin BTB for a few months now and i cant get it to sound this full, i cant figure out the mid i think

Also, i never get sick of atchin this vid man, its fantastic. When will the next one be out?

    ROCK ON!

  • The active Eq on the bass is mostly unaltered, both pickups are on with the bass, treble and mids all flat. For the Solo I use more of the Bridge pickup. The trick is to run your bass through a decent compressor and preamp. I used an EBS multi-comp and my bass amp which is an EA iamp 350. You can also use eq and compressors with your recording software, or download vst plugins that help to shape your sound.

  • O ok, i thort youd use the bridge pick-up coz i reckon the btb feels a lot more comfortable playin from there and the sound from there is much better then the front pick-up, it sounds too empty to me.

I mite hav to start playin with my FX pedal again on its compressor function. Thanx for the tips man

BTW, your vids inspired me to try one of these of my own. I'll send it to you.

    Hope you like it man

  • very nice!

  • When there is an 2.Michael Hedges in that case for playing bass it surely would be you!!!

    Nice Work!!

  • Dude, this is quite Awesome. I hope to see more videos soon.

  • Wow so on the beat and tight

    great !!

  • that´s amazing !!! i want the bass tab please!!

  • I think if it comes to buying an instrument you should buy the 6 string.

  • admittedly this is quite freaking awesome

  • DUDE... AWESOME... Just wondering: Why did you edit the vid to change instruments?

  • probably cuz he wanted a fretless on the track

  • oh yeh that too

  • so he could layer the background melody onto the vid of him playing the solo. right?

  • dude, one of the best on youtube, besides erland casperson .Excellent stuff.

  • That's some mad skill right there!!

  • Deadly (P)Bennett!!! That sounds amazing man! It's nice to hear your stuff again! When are you coming back to Montreal? It's about time to move back again :P

    Later man

  • WOW!! do you have an MP3 of that? if you do could you send it to me? absolutely amazing.

  • Jeez man this ROCKS! I cant believe this! Youre very skilled man! Ny tipsw you could give me on how you came up with this? I've been trying to improve my tapping

    ROCK ON!

  • Thanks BassmasterG!

I've actually started another youtube account for bass tips/tutorials. Right now there is just one video but it's about bass Tapping. I can't seem to post the link but you can find it if you search for advancebass on youtube.

  • Dude, again, that song is great. I was humming it all day at work.

  • Hey Thanks cdboyer.

I'd like to hear what the song would sound like hummed, I guess you could hum the root notes. Or do you hum the whole tapping phrase? Man that would be some humming chops.

  • I'm good, I can scat the whole solo. LOL.

  • That's what I call cookin in the kitchen. What a beautiful song. I love the way it moves. You keep getting better. Thanks!

  • Very nice

  • wish i knew how to tapp!

    :o!!

  • Hey Jim.. cool vid as always. and loving the 2.0 version of advancebass.

  • Thanks TattoedSoul!

It's been a real challenge creating the site as I'm still pretty new to the whole webdesign thing. I'm trying to make frequent updates right now I'm working on some transcriptions that will be available to download.

  • Right ON!!! ***** and added to favorites. I love the tone color changes between fretted and fretless basses.

  • just like that , in the kitchen !

    Keep'm coming Jim

  • god.. amazing..

  • Great song, nice phrasing, and you seem to have mastered both six-string and fretless, and that finger tapping stuff. Awesome.

  • Beautiful

  • Nice new one. You're always getting better too.

All of your solos in this are really cool.

  • CD Please!

  • WOW! That's amazing stuff, man!

  • wow!Greaaat!!

  • lovely stuff man - I know it must have been quite an effort to get it all synced up but it's all good and the playing is really sweet - nice one dude.

  • Thanks ijazzmunki!

It's true I'm no expert at video editing, actually when I recorded this I lost the video for the first solo; so I had to redo the solo, remix the song and recut the video. The next video should be smoother and hopefully better syncing as well.

  • Just keep doing what you are doing - it's great and it's your thing - which is the most important thing - and definitely a player after my own heart.. Willis etc. Nice one.

  • That is SIMPLY AWESOME!

  • that is simple AWESOME!

  • Sweeet! Nice job dude

  • awesome!! hahaha simple my butt!

i love the triplets in there
