  • 3:32 to 3:53 Why didn't you shoot them?

  • I'm a soldier, not a monster.

  • @BigBangBlitz But they're still evil, bunnies or not. If something shoots at you, then you shoot back.

  • 0:35 what kind of factory is that?

  • A fish factory.

  • This game is absolutely fantastic. STILL trying to find a copy of it for less than $45. But I vow, if I can find Little Samson for $0.89 in a Goodwill, I WILL find this game!

  • Man...You know you played a game a lot when you see a video like this, and all I kept saying was "Show the lucky cat boss...SHOW THE LUCKY CAT BOSS!". Still, I'm getting a kick out of your videos and enjoy seeing more obscure titles emerge. It's definitely one of the lesser known, though, hence why I stuck it in my NES Trivia video.

  • I used to love this game!

  • OMG! It's like Aero Fighters meet Parodious and still it's an awesome game! For the NES! :D

  • the music on this game sound like the person who pruduced the music for batman returns and ninja turtles 2 for (nes)

  • looks like aleste

  • I beat this game 5 years ago. Man is it tough but rewarding! Good music and fun game play just like it's predecessor (Zanac) one day I may track down the cart just to say I have both. This and Metal Storm are overlooked incredibly. Love both of those games!

  • زمان كنت مدمن هذه النوعية من الالعاب رهيبة.

  • this is not a review this is just gameplay

  • 0:49 THAT RABBIT'S DYNAMITE

  • THIS GAME!

I played this game once at school on vnes, but my class was about to start so I had to close vnes and I forgot the name, THANKS!

  • MY god...That many sprites on the screen, and barely any sprite flicker!

This looks amazing for an NES game!

  • I only discovered this wonderful gem of a game on an emulator around 7-8 years ago, many years after my NES playing prime. It almost instantly became one of my all-time favorites from the console. Super fun gameplay that blew me away, with many aspects that were indeed ahead of it's time. Such a shame that it doesn't get more recognition.

  • reason i asked is because of the little blue lander.. i seen them in a game called zanac also..

  • Yeah they are like Compiles mascots.

  • does this game have any relation to guardian legend?

  • Not story wise, but it's made by mostly the same people and features similar game play.

  • I feel bad this game is hard to come by. I rather play this game on the original console and cartridge. But everywhere I look, it seems that I've given up hope to add this to my NES collection.

The game reminds me a lot like Power Strike for the Sega Master System.

  • I've played this game, it was called "Blazing Lazers" on the Turbo-Grafx 16. I swear its almost the exact same game. I'm even questioning if I've ever actually played GUN*NAC, because Blazing Lazers is so alike.

  • Looks like a cool game. Too bad that it's hard to come by nowadays...esp. since it's classified "criminally overlooked"

  • This is the best vertical shooter of the 8 bit era

  • I'm inclined to agree.

  • someone really knew how to program here-lots of sprites!!!! I have this cart, in the box!

  • Yup, me too. Albeit a bashed up one.

Compile really knew how push system hardware!

  • Technically, it's not too hard to program; just create a type, endtype containing all of the sprite stuff -- damage values, attack speed, attack missile type etc. etc., create an array to indicate each of the sprites, assign it the type, use a for, next loop to assign everything, then just start coding all of the sprite movement patterns etc. o.o

  • You forgot something very important.

This is a Nintendo. Konami, Capcom, Sunsoft, Taito. Every one of these companies failed to achieve this level of technical mastery on Nintendo. A full soundtrack with overlapping sound effects an amazing amount of sprites and hands down the fastest scrolling of any NES game with little to no slowdown.

I say thee nay, even with the benefit of nearly 20 years of hindsight.

  • Good point, sir, but let us not forget that the screen occasionally flickers now and then due to the constant amount of refresh buffering required for such a large number of sprites which, frankly, would not occur if the method I noted upon was used.

  • why don't you go ahead and program what you say is so simple and post a video of it instead of just spewing simple theoretical programming on youtube comments

  • is this rare?

  • Relatively. Certainly more than Zanac.

  • Did this game come out on arcade as well?

  • No.

  • Wow. It really is criminal that I ever over-looked this one. Especially after the way I loved Zanac.

  • same here.

  • Power up system reminds me of Super Aleste. Check it out, you might like that one, too.

  • I remember when I first got this game, for xmas i think, i had never heard of it, and my parents didn't know squat about NES, it became my 2nd fav. nes game ever, i miss it so much, wish the old system hadn't broke

  • That pretty much explains how I came across Ultimate Air Combat.

    Thank god for clueless relatives.

  • A couple other great SHMUP's IMO are Crisis Force (Famicom) and Recca Summer Carnival '92 (Famicom-highly rare competition cartridge though). People do sell NES reproductions of the Recca game though.

  • I'm so glad to see this video on youtube! This game is so overlooked! I finally picked up my copy of this game (cartridge only) at a local Play N Trade for 15 bucks in mint condition. One of my all time favorite games on the NES. I beat the game last night too, it was AMAZING, and probably some of the best action/graphics/gameplay I've seen on the NES. I want to find a box and manual for this game now. I've been told the manual is also funny and very entertaining to read.

  • This is my favorite NES game :D

  • I have NEVER seen a shooter that looks so bad ass as this one...Life Force is NOTHING compared to this!! The graphics are quite detailed for the NES! And theres so much happening you would expect the game to slow down, but it doesn't!

I wish I had the chance to play this when I had my NES at the time man...Ive missed one of the best games for the NES...It just twists my heart knowing that THIS piece of genius was out there and not getting a chance to get a go on it. Best NES shooter ever!

  • I agree with you totally, but i'm biased.

Some good contenders you might want to check out besides this:

    Crisis Force on NES (JPN)

and Space Megaforce on SNES (US)

Crisis Force is a Konami shooter that kicks Life Forces ass, and Space Mega force is basically the 16 bit equivalent of GUN*NAC.

  • yeah kill those rabbits

  • what would you type in on eBay or Amazon to search for this game? I'm comin up with nothing...

  • I typed in "gun nac" and found a new in box selling for 60 bucks. I'm tempted to buy it.

It cost 54 dollars when it was released.

  • I should mention that was on Ebay. Amazon doesn't have anything.

  • Did you see the randor powerup? I dunno if they put him in all their games but I saw him in the SMS games power strike 2 and Golvellius when I was making speed runs for them. That little guy is creepy.

  • Yeah, they are called Landers and can be found in practically all of the themed shooters Compile programmed. It's sort of like their version of Capcom's Yashichi items.

  • This game has a pretty good size cult following. If anyone likes this and wants more, with some Zelda mixed in, try Compiles "Guardian Legend"

  • If you like this game, a LOT of early Compile shooters look/feel like this, including Zanac and stuff in the Aleste series, the most popular of which in the US was probably Space Megaforce.

You'll notice many of the same sound effects and same weapons.

  • Trust me when I say i've played them all.. even the first Aleste on Master System and the MSX/2 originals.

Compile is one of my favorite game companies. Between Puyo, the Devil/Alien crush, their top-notch shooters and general competency in all areas of game production, they had a lot going for them.

Shame the market was so unstable and fickle when they were at their apex.

  • robo aleste on sega cd was their best shooter imo, nothing comes close to it for me.

  • If it weren't for Snatcher it would be the best Sega CD game even.

  • This game has beastly written all over it. I still play it from time to time at my friends house since he still has a working NES. Amazing part is that it was heavily influenced by Anime and had a story, something you barely see in NES games.

  • You aren't kidding. It actually made me cry yesterday.

I thought I could take everything it could dish out by now but I didn't even make it past the 3rd level.

Compile games had pretty good background stories for mostly being twitch shooters, Zanac and Guardian Legend I remember in particular.

  • I love this game. Its always been my favorite licensed NES shmup

  • Yeah. It just has this aura of greatness. It's so varied and professional, and there's seemingly endless challenge. Even at my best after 15 years I can't get past stage 4 expert with ricocheting bullets on.

    Holy crap!

  • this shmup is quite good even though it was only seen in Nick Arcade

  • Wow, I so forgot about that.

You know, I think that might have been the reason I ran out and rented it. I was a huge fan of Blazing Lazers.

  • me too. however i only played blazing lazers on MAME recently. however, it was mind blowing, and i'm currently contemplating on downloading it to my wii's virtual console.
