Being able to learn technique IS talent, it takes commitment, and it just enhances what is already there. Do you really think Whitney never had training? There's no shame in it.

Don't go by rules in determining what a singer is, they just don't work. I can tell that Whitney can hit first soprano notes. However, I know that Whitney would have to "curve" her voice deeply to get to her higher register. Therefore, she should be singing alto, where she wont have to think before she hits the notes on her part. She may be able to go super high, but keeping up with a soprano part will strain her voice, even if it's not super high...

if you mean sing into your voice and then pull back as the transition hits....like a BOW and arrow...to the high notes...and sing those out your neck.....sure....But I try to use terms about the vocal chords more than WHERE the tone sits...LOL...i've heard someone scream pulling chest out their neck!! for me it's about what the chords are doing. Some terms can help but most clients don't care..it's just gotta sound good....Check out Brett Manning if you really dig voice...He's a true talent.

I will say that vocal chords from a microlaryngoscopy POV... look like they could bow..Like a hammock. You could sing into the middle where you're comfortable note would be until you have to come back up and back....but that catch is where people screw up,,,I try not to have people sing INTO the "Bow" "Curve" if you will...it just causes pulling and locks them up. As u know, ur Chords can either compress or stretch. which was my point with Whitney. A transitioned belt is RARE!! But u know this.

I'm just a Vocal Coach who loves voice & has spent years learning about it! It's my passion! Another great example is thinking of your vocal folds as an old style cloths "wringer" If you pay close attention your vocal folds actually (should) roll. If you sing from low to high, you'll feel your voice drop as the pitch raises, tone transfers, and they'll roll on themselves. most people fight this and get into trouble. But if done right, they roll, THEN zip up..but not until later.

BTW, The rolling of the folds happens as u sing higher into the "bow" coming back up. But most people have been using so much compression to sing higher that their voices lock up...won't roll. They don't (can't) give in (stretched chords) for the transition happen. At this point they just tense their chords to make a higher pitch, splat the tone. Funny, The one thing they're doing 2 sing higher is keeping them from singing higher. That's why a transitioned belt is so rare and hard to do.

...I am a baritone, and sometimes I can hit high notes in chest voice that some tenors won't, but I might not be able to sing tenor, it's not the same thing to hang in there as it is to hit freestyle highs. And stop judging her based on the younger version of her. How comes Yolanda Adams is a soprano? Because she can virtually sing in the soprano register without consciously "curving" her voice. So she usually sings soprano even though she can't go super high. Trust me on this one.

I agree, It's all about where you feel comfortable singing regardless of range. Mariah Carey doesn't want to sing... and live.... in Flageolet register all the time, even though she can hit those notes. Most people are wrongly classified cause they can sing high in a mix though. Classification was meant more for the "parts" sung by a choir in a song then vocal type. Truth is, most people have average range etc. But choir puts them in a box. BTW I respect your talent for voice. Do your thang!!
