But Group B was what got me interested in rallying when i was a little kid. Bring the power back with the better tech now it should be more do able.

Sure Cresto/Toivonen died in the S4 at the Tour de Corse, but you can get the message of the commentator. Look at that guy running across the road in front of Walter and people standing on the outside. I think this was the only spectator involved fatal accident and played a huge role in the end of Group B, the cancellation of Group S and the introduction of Group A.
Crowd control just didn't work there, though I'd like to stand right there or at the "Panzerplatte" today

Hence i said "contributing." Not the cause but definitely a correlation. It was the following three: driver deaths, spectator deaths and the the inability of certain venues not being able to control the crowds and basically power. The manufacturers were getting unlimited power from the turbo motors so they basically become unsafe to drive. Watch the video "to fast to race" i think you would like it.
Why people talk without knowing the facts? The group B wasn't abolished just because of this tragedy, but because of a series of rally cars accidents on which the death of Henry Toivonen was the final straw. Still, the people in the crowd knew the risks when they decided to watch the rally in such a close perspective. Sadly the ones who died payed the ultimate price for a rush of adrenaline...
They were there at their own risk. I don't know if it's that fair to insult those people whose passion for the rally thrill was so huge they were committed to make that kind of things. I personally would hardly put myself inside the road like they do but I certainly don't feel it's right to punish those who take that risk. We're all talking about passion. The banning of Group B cars was coming for a while. The cars were too powerful. Toivonen's death was the last drop. There's no guarantee of your life or safety when racing 200 km/h+ on public roads. Not to mention these speeds where often achieved on both tarmac and more dangerously, gravel, on roads that many times had trees along side them. Officials can ban a rally stage if the speed achieved is higher than 200 km and presents a risk.

Not to detract from the staggering stupidity of these people, I think FISA is the party responsible for the end of Group B. They could have demanded better crowd control, safer routes and easier schedules from organizers. That would have allowed the golden age of rally to continue.

Wrong. Not ALL rallies had spectators in the middle of the road on stages. I spectated at the RAC rally all through the 1980s, and the marshalls and spectators were, and are, very well behaved.

I live there, it's was a beautiful place for rallying, it wasn't very dangerous at all; but that accident the rally was moved to the north of the country(at the time).
The real problem were the spectators, not so much the huge power of Group B cars (in this case).
Such a shame about group B rallying - drivers and cars were much better then IMO and spectators should have been restrained. So many great cars were spawned from group B such as the Audi Quattro

Agree with you totally Silencer,those cars and their DRIVERS were awesome.I have watched in-car driving of Group B and how they drove them is beyond me!there were no paddle shifts then,those heroes drove most of the time with ONE hand,because of the power and speed came so fast and they were changing up and down in split seconds and boy were they nervous and twitchy cars.I drive in rallies my self,but not with anything like that power over the last twenty years.
I was there, not at that bend just 3 or 4 Km ahead. I was almost 18 years old and hitched hike to Sintra, and boy did I had fun that after morning until that fatal disaster. We were all drunk and on top of the trees and almost in the road (some times in the road). After that I never went to see another WRC.
Pretty sad to hear (read) that... You should go watch todays WRC again... Stewards take really good care so make the race save for spectators and drivers as well... Of course the "kick" will never be the same but watching (for example) Sebastan Loeb enter a turn sideways on a gravel rally... Dude, thats really amazing... Go see yourself...

Hence i said "contributing." Not the cause but definitely a correlation. It was the following three: driver deaths, spectator deaths and the the inability of certain venues not being able to control the crowds and basically power. The manufacturers were getting unlimited power from the turbo motors so they basically become unsafe to drive. Watch the video "to fast to race" i think you would like it.

Why people talk without knowing the facts? The group B wasn't abolished just because of this tragedy, but because of a series of rally cars accidents on which the death of Henry Toivonen was the final straw. Still, the people in the crowd knew the risks when they decided to watch the rally in such a close perspective. Sadly the ones who died payed the ultimate price for a rush of adrenaline...

They were there at their own risk. I don't know if it's that fair to insult those people whose passion for the rally thrill was so huge they were committed to make that kind of things. I personally would hardly put myself inside the road like they do but I certainly don't feel it's right to punish those who take that risk. We're all talking about passion. Being irrational is part of us.

it makes me upset and angry that people (adults) couldnt't control themselves and make sure they were at least a safe distance away. im not a health and safety freak, but where did common sense go? Thanks to this group b was dropped what an awful shame, i hope one day there is a return perhaps next time with a bit more insite and knowledge of the importance of safety!

Però è anche vero che l'organizzazione avrebbe potuto fare di più. Tutti danno la colpa alla potenza esorbitante delle gruppo B, che erano auto, quindi, pericolose. Non mi pare che dopo la loro eliminazione non ci siano state più vittime nei rally mondiali, anche tra gli spettatori. Certo che se il pilota, oltre a gestire un mezzo potente, doveva stare attento al pubblico di cretini, beh, il dramma era sempre dietro l'angolo e così è stato.

I was there i this was not the reason why group b was banned !!! You can see vids of WRC at Portugal and we still have the best crowds. Get informed before make stupid comments !! And if just think for a litle bit .. If the problem of Group B was Portugal fans Why didn´t they banned portugal only ?? netdriller you are 100% correct ! The Group B ended with Henry Toivonen and his Co-pilot Sergio (R.I.P.)death's at Tour de Corse 1986 AFTER the Portugal accident.

The banning of Group B cars was coming for a while. The cars were too powerful. Toivonen's death was the last drop. There's no guarantee of your life or safety when racing 200 km/h+ on public roads. Not to mention these speeds where often achieved on both tarmac and more dangerously, gravel, on roads that many times had trees along side them. Officials can ban a rally stage if the speed achieved is higher than 200 km and presents a risk.

The could've added safety barrier/fences for spectators in some stages in some WRC events for their own safety. that may have saved group b. RIP Group b.

Yes the cars were a bit powerful and no the blame does not rest solely on the spectators. FIA should have implemented better safety regulations and crowd control. It is a tragedy what happened to those people and those drivers. May they rest in peace and not be forgotten.

Not to detract from the staggering stupidity of these people, I think FISA is the party responsible for the end of Group B. They could have demanded better crowd control, safer routes and easier schedules from organizers. That would have allowed the golden age of rally to continue.

You'd think that even after 20 odd years the Portuguese would learn but we haven't. There is still a blatant disregard for safety on our roads. We have the highest road accident mortality rate in Europe and have no idea what keeping to speed limits means. A beautiful country but you've been warned if you ever want to drive, ride or even cross a road here!

no there was a fan in the middle of the road and the driver tried to dodge him and it made him loose control and crash on the other side, every driver complained there was people in the middle of the road and near misses, i think it can be exciting and all but when a less experienced driver or more nervous driver races in this condition that will happen....

Wrong. Not ALL rallies had spectators in the middle of the road on stages. I spectated at the RAC rally all through the 1980s, and the marshalls and spectators were, and are, very well behaved.
The Portuguese have a different way of looking at life, it isn't as valuable to them as it is to the rest of us!

I live there, it's was a beautiful place for rallying, it wasn't very dangerous at all; but that accident the rally was moved to the north of the country(at the time).
The real problem were the spectators, not so much the huge power of Group B cars (in this case).

Such a shame about group B rallying - drivers and cars were much better then IMO and spectators should have been restrained. So many great cars were spawned from group B such as the Audi Quattro

Agree with you totally Silencer,those cars and their DRIVERS were awesome.I have watched in-car driving of Group B and how they drove them is beyond me!there were no paddle shifts then,those heroes drove most of the time with ONE hand,because of the power and speed came so fast and they were changing up and down in split seconds and boy were they nervous and twitchy cars.I drive in rallies my self,but not with anything like that power over the last twenty years.

I was there, not at that bend just 3 or 4 Km ahead. I was almost 18 years old and hitched hike to Sintra, and boy did I had fun that after morning until that fatal disaster. We were all drunk and on top of the trees and almost in the road (some times in the road). After that I never went to see another WRC.

Pretty sad to hear (read) that... You should go watch todays WRC again... Stewards take really good care so make the race save for spectators and drivers as well... Of course the "kick" will never be the same but watching (for example) Sebastan Loeb enter a turn sideways on a gravel rally... Dude, thats really amazing... Go see yourself...
