EasternMerchant, she can get loans, grants, etc to pay her way through school. I have done this myself along with many others. It took me about 5 years after I finished school to pay my loans and it would have taken longer but my big corporate employer was very generous with a bonus one year. If she is bright and can demonstrate it, there are many private grants she can claim. Many have gone down this route and have success to show for it.

I would agree that many entrepreneurial people might do better to invest their money into their business ideas and just get specific education that will help them directly in their pursuit of success.

I saved for my kids college & didn't get "student" loans. One is a nurse & the other never used her degree (was a secretary). I went to college for 3 years & quit because basically I looked around & felt they weren't teaching anything of value & most of those people couldn't even spell or string a sentence together. Most people I know are not using their degrees at all & can't get decent jobs & are still paying off their loans. Degrees don't guarantee success.
No, I don't agree on the "statistical" part. I am only speaking from personal experience. Those I know rolling in cash didn't go to school. They created something people need or want and they introduced it intelligently. It is those who can create a product or service that is sought after, that make the fat cash. This is only what I have 'seen' though.

I don't like the personal attacks of the caller toward Alex but he is partly correct. Higher education puts you at the top of the pile so to speak. Employers want to employ bright minds who have invested in their time in educational endeavors. Now that is not to say people without higher education are screwed or destined for low class lives. NOT TRUE...i only grad. high school...the next year i started my very own boat detailing business here in the boating capital of the world sunny Florida....now i have a crew of 8 and i take in home 125k-150k yearly and im currently expanding and creating jobs....on the other hand i have friends with college degrees and they are on food stamps......so MAKE SOMETHING OF YOUR SELF OR LET THEM PROGRAM YOU THE WAY THEY SEE FIT.....

Even a lot of jobs like salesman (for big companies) can be hard to get these days without a college degree.
I would agree that many entrepreneurial people might do better to invest their money into their business ideas and just get specific education that will help them directly in their pursuit of success.
Everybody needs to start with a good goal and choose their best path to success. For many, that is a college education. For many others, a different approach can surely work.

Any idiot who just goes to college without a plan and thinks there is going to be a job there at the end of 4 years is sadly mistaken. However, statistics show that the higher the degree a person has, the higher average salary and the lower average unemployment.
Can a person become successful without a degree? Sure. But face it, people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Rush Limbaugh are exceptions to reality--their results are not typical. Try getting a job as an airline pilot without a degree.

I saved for my kids college & didn't get "student" loans. One is a nurse & the other never used her degree (was a secretary). I went to college for 3 years & quit because basically I looked around & felt they weren't teaching anything of value & most of those people couldn't even spell or string a sentence together. Most people I know are not using their degrees at all & can't get decent jobs & are still paying off their loans. Degrees don't guarantee success.

No, I don't agree on the "statistical" part. I am only speaking from personal experience. Those I know rolling in cash didn't go to school. They created something people need or want and they introduced it intelligently. It is those who can create a product or service that is sought after, that make the fat cash. This is only what I have 'seen' though.

Having a degree isn't a golden ticket. It is just further evidence that you showed resilience to a system that makes you pay to work for professional students (professors). Networking & experience are IMHO what sets apart people in the working class these days. Degrees are becoming a dime a dozen. They are abundant around here. No hate to anyone who has or doesn't have a degree though. We should all love each other.

Spot on Alex. I work for many extremely wealthy men in Scottsdale, AZ and know them personally. Not one of them spent a day in college. I am a college grad myself, w/ a degree in Political Science. I only went to college to become an officer in the AF. Didn't pan out and now I have a degree. I hated the lies I heard everyday in school. I hated the money pit it is & the spirit of what they do.

I don't like the personal attacks of the caller toward Alex but he is partly correct. Higher education puts you at the top of the pile so to speak. Employers want to employ bright minds who have invested in their time in educational endeavors. Now that is not to say people without higher education are screwed or destined for low class lives. In fact I'm starting my own web business soon without any business degree. I also have a $25/hour job & am currently doing a degree in health science.

I, for one, had my high school diploma mailed to me through my home school because i got kicked off of campus for arguing with (and correcting) my teachers when they were teaching us nonsense. I also dropped out of COMMUNITY COLLEGE after 1 year. I'm 28 now and I make more than any of my friends and consider myself smarter than most people I know. Nobody needs a college education to be successful. Just be smart.
