love these guys. Although this is not the original Outlaws. Henry Paul left before this tour and the original bass player Frank Keefe had left a year earlier after Lady In Waiting. Sadly he killed himself as did Billy Jones.who is in this video. Harvy Dalton Arnold is on bass and Freddie Salem on guitar. I think he was in a band called the Godz. They never were the same after Henry Paul left. He was a big part of the Florida Guitar Army!
I'm not goign to say they stole it because everybody steals from somebody; however, I just listened to a song by an old band Focus. The song is Hocus Pocus. Apart from they incredibly unique vocals in Hocus Pocus, the melody and guitar-raging is almost identical. The performance I watched was in 1972.
Hendrix definitely couldn't have played this song *in his sleep*..no way! But he could PRACTICE FEW DAYS and learn to play this great song. And that would be RIGHT THINK for his guitar playing, because he would learn to play faster and more clear, and he needed such an practice...he was genius, but * too much self taught*, as far as I'm concerned. If he learned to play this song maybe Miles Davis could joined him to his bend (Davis said that Hendrix could not play the chords in his band)
funny dannyhood66, I saw Van Halen blow Black Sabbath off stage as a warm up band in '78;The Outlaws were huge in '77,Lynyrd Skynyrd knew them and praised them as family since the late 60's-late 70's era, the Outlaws cried when Skynyrd died in that plane crash, so fuck off and next time remember this, "We came here to play for you, not be praised as gods, enjoy the show" asshole!!
@dannyhood66 they must've only listened to a cpl outlaw tunes. this is florida's guitar army, tampa boys show up to blow ur fkn mind. RIP Hughie, thank you for the gifts.
No denying Hendrix was a extremely talented, innovative artist, with the added factor of playing a guitar reverse-handed remarkably well. Yet much of the cult built around Hendrix is based on his role in 1960s counter-culture and the aura of his drug-and-alcohol-related death. To denigrate the Outlaws' own incredible talents by saying they're "not as good as..." Hendrix, Clapton, Allman, Vaughn, Nugent, etc., not only shows disrespect for their skills, but ignorance and disrespect for music.

@BBINGHAM032352 playing someone else s shit should not be that hard it is making it up that is why Jimi is considered to be a guitar god because of what he has made up not covered
If they had playlists in 77 this would've been in my top 5. I wore the vinyl out of outlaws bring em back live...saw them several times two of the best Strat Les paul players . They don't miss a note and there are plenty.
@fender7375 RHCP? STP? Sublime? Godsmack? Unless you think "real music" only consists of scaling the guitar up and down for 15 min...Then yes, you are correct.
56 and played this in my wrangler jeep with 6 speakers two amps ( 1000- 500) watts plus the sub woofer the neighbors were yelling to turn it up I hit the max it rocked just awesome
Aside from the astonishing technical prowess it takes to play like this, what really puzzles me is how they develop the hand strength to play with this intensity for such extended performances.
I saw these guys at Tennessee Tech around 1975 or 76 before they became the southern rock legends . The concert featured a horn band called The Memphis Horns(I think), Outlaws, and the headliner Charlie Daniels Band. Who do you think stole the show? Been a fan ever since. I haven't heard this in so long but what a great memory. Thanks for putting this up.
hmm, im curious how 2 drum sets would improve the overall sound of a band, knowing nothing of how music is made all i can do is wonder, is it useful or just for the looks?
9 dislikes, what the hell is the matter with people? Have they no idea what kick ass' sizzling, great rock and roll sounds like! You don't hear music like this anymore.....
Does anybody know how Freddie Salem was invited to join the Outlaws? Not to be mean and I have nothing against Freddie but the reason I ask is that he was not in the same league as Hughie or Billy as far as guitar playing.
I love the comment "minds full of music." Reminds me of my friends and myself.
I grew up on all this stuff, Outlaws, Skyrnrd, etc, and it still makes me feel great. As guitar players, these guys sort of stayed in the box, and there wasn't anything that fancy about those repetitive triplets, but boy did it sound great!
It's all about the feel, and that does seem to be gone from newer music. At least the crap on the radio. It's mostly un-listenable.
I need to mention this: as to the riffs, compare the shapes of the hands of the two guitarists. The older man who is the author of this song has typical "man hands" that are very suitable for this sort of riffing. The other guitarist has a different kind of hands that are very suitable for quickly reaching complex chords, but not so good at the sustained effort of the rock riffs. But both have minds full of music and rock and roll. How the different people can work for the same excellent goal.
@MissyMicole23 Hard to keep up when you are in guitar heaven. I bet Hendrix could do this in his sleep. These guys are great. tight, and coherent but I don't know if they could play with Duane Allman, Hendrix, or some other greats.
@mrfinsky how can you say that hendrix can do this in his sleep? could he play 2 guitars at once, not at all; and hell i bet you have never played guitar in your entire life.. oh and they have played with the allman brothers btw.
@TheCannabisKing I believe that when I said "these guys are great, tight, and coherent" that I was offering high praise. I think that my reply was in response to a comment that the guys were the greatest guitarists ever. Hendrix, Allman, and a very few others were in the top pantheon of greatest guitar players ever. The Outlaws were a fabulously unappreciated group that cranked out some great music. I just doubt that they were among the best ever.
"Stevie rays pretty good but can he keep up??????? I will smoke a turd in hell for that one.but still a lagitimate question," - That's the question you replied to, not a word of The Outlaws being the best ever. And when you say, " I don't know if they could play with Duane Allman, Hendrix, or some other greats" after saying "I bet Hendrix could do this in his sleep," the compliment is pretty much negated. Also, Thomasson is in the Fender Hall of fame which makes him among the best.
@TheCannabisKing They are all great guitarists. I thought I replied to a comment that these guys were the best ever. I was more offended by the implication that Stevie Ray couldn't keep up. Whether it is baseball or guitar playing, comparing artists from various era's and styles is nearly impossible. I can brag that I saw Hendrix live and find it hard to imagine that he couldn't handle any challenge. People debate about a lot of guitar players, but I have never seen a question about Hendrix.
Right, I used to think the same about Hendrix, still do to some extent, but what set The Florida Guitar Army apart from Hendrix is that they collectively rocked as a whole. I'm not talking about pure guitar playing, its about talent as a whole. Don't get me wrong, I think Hendrix had more soul then most, but the flame has him beat on playing smoothly clean and fast licks. I've seen people that can play Hendrix perfectly, but I've only seen one guy on Youtube that can play GG&HT correctly.
I agree there greengtrs. One of the smokingest riff tunes ever created.I still use them also after 30 years. They surely don't make bands or music like this any more - do they ? I hate it for the kids. Too bad most kids think music is spitting and a drum machine with a bunch of guys saying Yo -Yo . Does'nt say much for the music industry these days. Carolina Stratman
Blues/rockabilly,Pure american music.Should be blasted through out islam .They might even try some BBQ pork ribs southern style after they are totally blown away by these riffs. Then again i could be wrong,Its possible their heads might explode.
Current guitarists don't spend the time to learn their craft like this and to pay their dues along the way... instant success is expected, and the record companies rush a bunch of semi-talented pretty boys and angry freaks into the limelight instead.
@TheCannabisKing - not sure that LSD is necessary to play this exceptionally well, but I suspect those good ol' boys in the Outlaws knew their way around a keg, a shot glass, and a bong.
Wow, do Ifeel old now ? Bought this Album in 78 and Ithought it was the dogs do dars then , well its still the dogs bollocks after all these yrs , wont hear or see a better rift from any one me thinks , but I dare say someone will show me the error of my ears! Just great!
AWSOME!!! Is this concert available as a DVD? The camera work is great. No bullshit cutaways to the crowd or phazed out graphics. Just what counts, hands on the guitars.
@andres22002 Wow , thats a good one , well me ol` china , chicken or the egg ? My opinion for what it`s worth is they`re both the dogs bollocks in their own way , but I can say this I dont think you`ll hear better , but some might say different eh ?
I saw them back around this time when they opened for Boston . I didn't know too much about them except for GGHT, but they literally blew Boston away. It was stunning. Boston was boring by comparison, despite the fog and flash bang crap. The southern guys come from a tradition of musicianship. Bluegrass players and flatpick guitarists are among the best musicians on the planet. The original lineup was an incredible rock band, but could also play the most heartfelt blues/country rock.
GODDAMNIT - i thought i´d known all good thinks - but this is GLORIOUS ! Poor me, that i´m to young - lucky me, that i have the chance to listen to the past !!!!! The 21st century is full of scum.
@Tycjan92 Yea, I feel lucky that when I was 15 in 1977 I saw them (for the first of many times) and was blown away by how unpretentious, but powerful their performance was- the bass/drum combo, the incredible guitars, the harmonies. A word that comes to mind is spellbinding. I like some of today's stuff, but I have to say that even the crappiest of the 70's bands were far better players than today's rock groups, even good ones like KOL. Now is all sound, emotion, a simple hook, etc. .
AHHH The great OutLaws ! They were and always will be great . Seen them play a few years back in NJ at a Lake,,,they were great even though half of them were the original members...was a pleasure seeing them though...this is real rock....well I call it country fried rock !
@gsxrkz yea hendrix is my favorite musican but this solos like 18 minutes hendrixs solos were only like 30 secs to a minute but im sure hendrix culd make a solo like this if he wanted to and was still alive lol and i onestly dont understand why ths solo aint on the top solos of all time
Pete's right, that was Billy Jones who was playing the Gibson LP. Ah, the year of three or four lead players playing all at the same time.... Southern Rock's claim to fame.
You think two drummers and 2 or 3 guitarists is unusual? Check out Slipknot. They are a NINE piece metal band. Drums, 2 percussionists, 2 guitarists, bass, someone sampling, someone on turntables(yes, a DJ!) and a frontman!
@MegaBigen i always said slipknot is for posers that wanna look heavy, there are other better real bands such as maiden, slayer, metallica and many others that wipe their asses any day with those masked sissis
I met Hughie several times before he passed, and this is really a great thing to remember him and the others by, The lead guitar they played was not self indulgent.
The structure of the song is much older than Free Bird. It comes from the cutting contest where two players would try to play licks the other could not. Devil Went Down to Georgia is an example. Damn! those boys were GREAT!
@malik324 because most of them are brainwashed into thinking that shit like justin Beiber is good. My naval puckers just thinking about him. It all started with people trying to create new and interesting technology that made the songs of better sound quality.
@malik324 Actually, we try. Some of us have all of this repertoire. But in the modern day it's more about synths and mixing and digital capture and sampling replay. Besides, all of these riffs come out of old-school country western music and these disco-driven rockers in the modern day, they can't be persuaded to do all of the finger exercises 10 hours a day for 20 years.
But these musicians here are clearly descended from the lesser gods. Sons of the Muses.
@malik324 (Because their dead or undiscoverd.)In an interview with malcom young reguarding angus youngs playing ability Yes i mean AC/DC compared to eric clapton or Jimmie Page,he said quote "THOSE FAGS HAVE BEEN RIPPEN MY BROTHER OF FOR YEARS" With that being said,AFTER WATCHIN THESE GUYS all these guitar heros are left holding their dicks in their hands.
This is in my point of view the Outlaws best song because of the kick ass guitar solo and the song has a great rhythm. Many rock bands now adays have no rhythmic guitar solos, its all about speed.
Well, let's be honest ... too many guitar solos are self-indulgent and lack soul. They're more about "look what I can do" rather than actually creating an exciting aural landscape. This song is a notable exception because it ebbs and flows and builds to an exciting climax. There's not a wasted note (although I could do without the drum solo, or any drum solo for that matter).
Oh, and for the record, if one wants to argue that this song is a Free Bird rip off, then it can be argued that Free Bird is a rip off of a song called Phoenix by an English band called Wishbone Ash. Phoenix was the original song that set the trend for songs like Free Bird and Green Grass And High Tides, in terms of starting off as a ballad then turning into an extended guitar rave up. Check out the Wishbone Ash live album Live Dates for a good example.
Uhm, Phoenix was released on the first Wishbone Ash album, which came out in 1970, not 1977! And the first Skynyrd (which of course had Free Bird on it) came out in 1973, not 1974.
This was before guitar effects and digital effects. Plain jane bad ass guitar playin ! Back when music was more real ! Say what you want, these guys are bad ass ax players and as a band were great.
Actually guitar effects had existed for well over a decade by the time of this concert. The first fuzztone and wah wahs were introduced back in the mid 60's. Check out the studio version of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction from The Rolling Stones.
And in fact, I think Hughie liked to use a little flanger on his guitar during this period. If you listen closely to Bring It Back Alive, you can hear one of the guitarists is using a flanger on some of the tracks. In fact, you can hear it on this song.
saw them in 79 or 80 with j geils in cincy they ruled that night

No denying Hendrix was a extremely talented, innovative artist, with the added factor of playing a guitar reverse-handed remarkably well. Yet much of the cult built around Hendrix is based on his role in 1960s counter-culture and the aura of his drug-and-alcohol-related death. To denigrate the Outlaws' own incredible talents by saying they're "not as good as..." Hendrix, Clapton, Allman, Vaughn, Nugent, etc., not only shows disrespect for their skills, but ignorance and disrespect for music.

@CadillacL Too hard to compare! Both genuine classics. More riffs and jam in GG&HT is my feeling.

@andres22002 Wow , thats a good one , well me ol` china , chicken or the egg ? My opinion for what it`s worth is they`re both the dogs bollocks in their own way , but I can say this I dont think you`ll hear better , but some might say different eh ?
holstenfull 11 months ago
I saw them back around this time when they opened for Boston . I didn't know too much about them except for GGHT, but they literally blew Boston away. It was stunning. Boston was boring by comparison, despite the fog and flash bang crap. The southern guys come from a tradition of musicianship. Bluegrass players and flatpick guitarists are among the best musicians on the planet. The original lineup was an incredible rock band, but could also play the most heartfelt blues/country rock.

Tycjan92 1 year ago 2
@Tycjan92 Yea, I feel lucky that when I was 15 in 1977 I saw them (for the first of many times) and was blown away by how unpretentious, but powerful their performance was- the bass/drum combo, the incredible guitars, the harmonies. A word that comes to mind is spellbinding. I like some of today's stuff, but I have to say that even the crappiest of the 70's bands were far better players than today's rock groups, even good ones like KOL. Now is all sound, emotion, a simple hook, etc. .
JLDB1987 1 year ago
AHHH The great OutLaws ! They were and always will be great . Seen them play a few years back in NJ at a Lake,,,they were great even though half of them were the original members...was a pleasure seeing them though...this is real rock....well I call it country fried rock !

You think two drummers and 2 or 3 guitarists is unusual? Check out Slipknot. They are a NINE piece metal band. Drums, 2 percussionists, 2 guitarists, bass, someone sampling, someone on turntables(yes, a DJ!) and a frontman!
brymstoen 2 years ago
they used to have 14 people in the band

LOL - two drummers
spineboy 2 years ago
@spineboy Two drummers is a funny concept. And there were plenty of people who laughed even back then.
Of course, there were also those who insisted it was necessary to "better maintain the back beat" (whatever that was supposed to mean).
But The Outlaws weren't the only ones to be doing this. The Grateful Dead and Allmans had it, too, back in the early '70s.
Critisize this to a dead head and, of course, you were guilty of blasphemy!...the poor clowns.

The Melvins are one band today that does it. Boy do they sound even louder now then before.

Best Video EVER!
Thank you so much for posting this.
I met Hughie several times before he passed, and this is really a great thing to remember him and the others by, The lead guitar they played was not self indulgent.
God Bless You!
Guitarmike 2 years ago 3
The structure of the song is much older than Free Bird. It comes from the cutting contest where two players would try to play licks the other could not. Devil Went Down to Georgia is an example. Damn! those boys were GREAT!

why arent contemporary guitarists this damn good
malik324 2 years ago 14
@malik324 because most of them are brainwashed into thinking that shit like justin Beiber is good. My naval puckers just thinking about him. It all started with people trying to create new and interesting technology that made the songs of better sound quality.
JOECOXISAWESOME 1 year ago
@malik324 because being good does not sell now, what really sells is being a fag like tokio fag hotel or shit like that, what a shame
PD: is the main guitarist in this video still alive?
xanthegreat1 1 year ago
@xanthegreat1 No, he died back in 2007.
BacarraDefil3d 1 year ago
@malik324 Actually, we try. Some of us have all of this repertoire. But in the modern day it's more about synths and mixing and digital capture and sampling replay. Besides, all of these riffs come out of old-school country western music and these disco-driven rockers in the modern day, they can't be persuaded to do all of the finger exercises 10 hours a day for 20 years.
But these musicians here are clearly descended from the lesser gods. Sons of the Muses.
ThomasHardmanJr 1 year ago
@malik324 (Because their dead or undiscoverd.)In an interview with malcom young reguarding angus youngs playing ability Yes i mean AC/DC compared to eric clapton or Jimmie Page,he said quote "THOSE FAGS HAVE BEEN RIPPEN MY BROTHER OF FOR YEARS" With that being said,AFTER WATCHIN THESE GUYS all these guitar heros are left holding their dicks in their hands.

@puckerfactor1 Angus can shred like no other, but he lacks sound.
Cavin8r 7 months ago
This is in my point of view the Outlaws best song because of the kick ass guitar solo and the song has a great rhythm. Many rock bands now adays have no rhythmic guitar solos, its all about speed.
Caoshunter23 2 years ago
Most modern rock bands don't do guitar solos at all. If they do, it's 30 seconds long at the max.
Troll4MoarLulz 2 years ago
