Correction to previous post: The guitarist that I thought was Terry Kath of CTA, was not, and I can only guess that it was John Till, who replaced Sam Andrew in Janis' Kozmic Blues Band as guitarist.
Harvey Mandell played guitar for Canned Heat, but did not appear in this film. Canned Heat came on about 3:00am, and I constructed a lounge chair out of bags of empty cans and got a great spot about 50 ft in front of the stage for their set.
Fito de la Parra played a black double set of Slingrlnd
continuing artists in order of appearance:(from Grand Funk Railroad), Alvin Lee of Ten Years After, playing his red 335; I'm guessing the big glasses in the dark might be Cynthia from Sly & the Family Stone, but I remember the stage being pretty well lit when they played, Johnny Winter closes, obviously. Later, he & BB went over to the Free Stage to jam and I managed to get onstage because I had a drum key in my pocket. BB passed me a quart of Coors that they were drinking. I said, "Sure, Man."
I had this all documented in a little notebook, that I lost some time in the early 70s, stage setups, drumsets, songlists. Man, I hated losing that. Anyway, as near as I can trell: Cast= Kunulini Yoga Guru "Align yer chakras and pleasure will RUSH up yer spine"; Herbie Mann's bassist(?); James Cotton; Minnie Ripperton w/Rotary Connection;Santana conga; Sly(?);Sam&Dave; Janis& her saxist; Terry Kath of CTA; Canned Heat(Bob, Blind Al, Larry the Mole);TonyJoe White;Stewkey of Nazz;WavyGravy;GFR;TBC
I was over in the NAM while these hippies were doing weed and LCD. Now mind you, I did meet Janis once and liked her, but come on. All these draft dodgers should have been with me crawlin through the jungle.
@Numismatist100 I'm sorry, how were you crawlin through the jungle in 1969 if you're only 44? God bless our troops/God bless our right to Rock n Roll.
@Numismatist100 yeah, dude, that really WOULD have been a neat trick !! yer killin' me, man. so you were like 4 years old eh, trekkin' thru the bush in " the NAM" , shootin' gooks an' shit ? an' were you still in diapers when you met Janis, or potty trained already ? man, I think you musta done a little too much of that LCD
Sat around a bonfire after hours with some other guys, one of whom was Mark Farner. Mark was really psyched and couldn't sit still. Morgan Fairchild was dating the concert promoter and pulled up backstage in a pink 57 t-bird wearing a large white hat. I had red curly hair halfway down my back, dark sunglasses, purple bell bottoms and a green t-shirt. Wish I could remember more......
I worked in the Backstage crew mostly wandered around sitting on the stage left speaker scaffolding telling photogs not to climb on it......Janis Joplin hugged me, musta thought I was somebody else. I stood next to BB King watching Johnny Winter whirling like a dervish.
my dad was cheif enginer over the festival ROY C.LEE STAGE LIGHTING DALLAS, I rember him telling me I had to help him put gas in all the generators,I was only 12 years old ,I never was the same after those 3 days,I'm still a hippie today!R.E.LEE
Nice shots of Cotton and Janis. Some of the audio from this fest circulates amongst the bootleg circuit and might make a better sound bed for this footage. :)
Thanks so much for posting. I lived in Lewisville for 21 years, 1985 to 2006. I heard of the Dallas International Motor Speedway in Lewisville. I did not know about this concert. Thanks to people like you to preserve the past and to keep it alive.
Every time I drive down Hebron Road I always think of the festival that was held there so many years ago and how few people really remember anything about it or where it was actually held.
wow, thanks. i was all of 12 yrs old when my mom let an older teen in the apt complex take me for the first night because she knew how much i loved janis joplin! but i got herbie mann,, bb king, canned heat, santana, chicago transit authority and sam and dave! what a huge night! thank you so much for helping me remember... xoxoxoxoxo
The land where the stage was is still vacant, although the ground has been raised about 3ft for future construction (it used to flood), but no one around really knows or cares, there were some good races out there too!
Almost 40 Years have gone by...I was there all 3 days..One of the highlights of my life...Just wish I could find my friend Ron Johnson who went with me...Thanks for the memories...
wow. Thanks for posting. I was there, too. I went right up to the stage while Janis played. I also remember Led Zepplin playing at about 1 AM, Page with his violin bow. Lots of people peaking on acid. heh. Sam & Dave. Grand Funk's first real gig (they opened the show and I believe played all three days). Ah, memories...
Anybody around my age (20) who lives in denton county and the surrounding areas who listens to zep, santana, freddie king, etc.. is like"what the fuck, I can't believe all of these legends were in Lewisville!!!"
That's Big Bear Hite and Blind Owl Wilson from Canned Heat at 2:36. Is that Nazz or Grand Funk at 3:05? Definitely Johnny Winter at 3:57 - didn't he close the festival?
Remember Stone Place Mall in downtown Dallas and later gatherings at Lee Park? And what was the head shop on Oak Lawn right next door to the Wrecking Bar, which much later became the Hard Rock Cafe?
Thanks again dcwedu for the great memories. How DID we miss each other?
I can't believe it..At 40 secs. is my girlfriend in highschool blonde.."The one" if you know what I mean..I was there all 3 days..Can't believe this moment in time still lives ..thanks ..was a great memory jolt..
I was there and got to wondering this evening if any film might exist and might be posted. Man, it seems like a long time ago! Thanks for posting this.
The guy playing harp at 1:20 is James Cotton of the JC Blues Band. And that's Minnie Riperton with Rotary Connection at 1:40. I saw somewhere they were looking for footage of the band at this gig. Wavy Gravy at 3:21. That may be Alvin Lee of Ten Years After at 3:40. I had just turned 15 and shared a J with Page there.
thanx for sharing..looks like a few seconds of alvin Lee / 10 yrs after btw its not Johny winters..it's Johnny Winter

Graduated Denton High School in 1969. This was a big event, but we didn't know how big at the time. Best I remember, a 3 day pass cost $18.00 (lol).
