  • this is my favorite bright eyes song of all time.

  • I know this song is about statutory rape, but applying the lyrics to one of my life's past loves hits hard. The starting out as close friends part, how he describes her movement and eyes... great beach memories, getting dumped by a girl I then loved via a short note. Love how he talks about not letting women in for fear of getting hurt and just having shallow relationships from now on bc of how badly the girl hurt him, I can't risk that again. Same exact situation here minus the stat rape.

  • If you dont like bright eyes you can statutory rape yourself fuckers!

  • yfw some dude whines into a mic and autotunes it, makes millions

  • The whole point of the song is he was a boy had sex with a woman and she left him because he was too young for her. Then I guess he grows up to use people and not get close to anyone.

  • @A2Z83 nope

  • @A2Z83 Rape actually.

  • @theaudiencewalksaway - No, not at all - if it came across as condescending it wasn't my intention. I heard this song for the first time 5 years ago, and always heard it the way I explained earlier. It's art, I suppose - subject to the interpretation of the subject. I typically refrain from youtube - no one can ever discuss as easily as they can disdain. Condescending? It's just a song. Condescending? - only if you bruise easily. Condescending? - not much.

  • @rtaft1980 Haha, I didn't mean you were being condescending. I meant the woman in the song is being condescending. Sorry if it came out wrong. Anyways I think the actual lyrics read 'I am a woman', but yes great art is certainly up for open interpretation. Cheers,

  • @theaudiencewalksaway I still hear a long e song instead of a short a, Plus, the line right before it: 'Just once something dies you can't make it live' makes me think she was unsure about her sexuality then - after sleeping with him - decides she needs a woman

  • @rtaft1980 Nah she's talking about their (blip of a ) relationship - it's dead, they can't make it live. She's letting him down. You can tell she is saying he's too young because of the emphasis on 'sweet little kid'. Condescending much.

  • This is my favorite Bright Eyes song.. Next to "The Calendar Hung Itself."

Just kidding. Every song is my favorite.

  • I thought this song was about a dude who falls in love with a lesbian who takes advantage of him ('you're a beautiful boy/a sweet little kid/ but I need a woman'). Regardless, it still resonates with anyone who fell in love with someone who was just being used for his or her body, then repeats the cycle to avoid the truth: love can sometimes, and might often be, a one-way street.

  • @rtaft1980 haha it says 'i am a woman' She's not a lesbian, she is just discarding him because he is too young.

  • This song reminds me of Christmas in a way. Like the cold of the air and Christmas lights remind me of this song.

  • @xXEastJesusNoWhereXx WEIRD. me too. This whole album, and especially this song, remind me of winter... i wonder why that is.

  • My favorite song when i saw them live about two months ago in dallas.

  • This song.

  • This song is speaking volumes to me right now. I slept with a girl who I really liked and she basically used me. I've been doing everything I can to get over it.

  • one of the best cd's i have ever bought in my life.

  • @ajarofgelly definitely

  • without darkness how can one appreciate light...

Suffering is part of understanding the love.

You are all beautiful with so much potential... Every single individual ON THIS EARTH... but,... if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life thinking it's stupid....

    <3 <3 <3 <3

  • @stephz0r or a freaking genius!~

  • Me: "Pfft... this indie bullshit is not for me."

    song: "Tralala"

me: (through tears) "WHAT IS THIS SORCERY"

  • This song last night.... MAGIC. Really good stuff. It was awesome, before he played this song he said "this song's about losing your innocence or virginity. So this is for all you virgins out there. Any virgins out there?" I'm almost positive that was limited to me.

  • Conor Oberst, why are you such a song-writing god?

  • This is the story of my life.

  • "This song is about a cougar, I bet you have a lot of those in Detroit. I hope you like it." -Conor Oberst saw them last week.

  • @TheALTGaming haha, he says the cougar thing a lot. even in 2007.

  • "This song is about statutory rape. I hope you like it." -Conor Oberst.

  • this is a good song, but its depressing as fuck

  • This song reminds me of why I'm suicidal :p

  • <3

  • i saw him live yesterday at artpark and he was amazing. This was probably my favorite song he played because I've never heard it before and that is why im listening to it right now.

  • this is a good fucking song

  • 0_0 i dont like that song=( I DONT SAY IT SUCKS!

  • this is my favorite song.

  • 5 people have dark eyes

  • "I should probably feel cheap, but I just feel free, and a little bit empty"

    So perfect.

  • I've never replayed a song so much in my life.

This is the exact story of my life.

I know you'll hear this a lot, but I'm to the point where it halfway scares me how spot on this is.

I was in love with this girl, and for three years we had the most beautiful relationship. Long story short, she took my innocence, and left with it.

She regrets every bit of it.

A year later, I still feel all the pain, and no amount of "easy" girls will ever give me that feeling I had.

  • Now I do as I please and lie through my teeth

Someone might get hurt, but it won't be me

I should probably feel cheap but I just feel free...

    and a little bit empty

    Fucking Ay, Conor, Fucking Ay.

  • "Love nothing" has been my slogan for the past 6 months and it has done me well

  • everybody just stfu and enjoy the music. [:

  • The beauty of music is that it means different things to different people.

Stop arguing over what the meaning is, enjoy the song, enjoy its beauty.

  • rawr its just an awesome song we all love and should just listen and nothing more ♥

  • you guys understand nothing

it's about having sex with a friend, and after that she regrets it and he thinks it's because he's not a real man but still insecure and starts being fake and lie to get close to people so he won't ever be hurt again, and he should feel cheap but he feels free and empty

  • @BIitzkrieg woah dude, you just blew my fucking mind. omg youre so astute. you should have a statue in of yourself in Tiananmen Square. youre the fucking shit dude. keep up the good work. reading lyrics at people who clearly understand the underlying meaning already. youre a camelcoplulating piss swiller. i hate the fuck out of you. please kill yourself or wake the fuck up. one of the two. smurfdicked fucktheif

  • @BIitzkrieg you just copied half the lyrics to the song.. looool

  • @BIitzkrieg Someone is a little full of themselves.

  • maybe the woman in the song is doing the same thing he is describing. she may have been left by someone who only thought of her as a little girl

  • @ArroganceClause maybe the game.

  • i was lonely and feeling blue

thats when you found me and we had a screw

you were the first woman ive ever touched

and i swear that i care for you just not that much

we've had some times and you like it rough

and i swear i still love you

    just not enough.

  • Just found out the guy who programmed the tracks for The Postal Service programmed this song. I think that's awesome. :)

  • Now I do as I please and lie through my teeth

Someone might get hurt, but it won't be me

  • Holy Shit. i just heard this for the first time. I LOVE IT! It describes just about every guy I ever liked or attempted a relationship with - previously damaged and terrified someone else was going to hurt him.

  • @RachaelBooks yay damaged goods!

  • This is such a beautiful song.

  • You guys over analyze Conors songs way too much. It's fken annoying. Just take it for what it is fuck. He didn't think about ALL that shit before writing this song. He just wrote what he felt. That's just the way it is. Just enjoy the goddamn song.

  • words cannot describe how i love this track.

despite the really really really ridiculous fans.

  • I wonder if this happened to him.

  • Sluts create sluts.

  • This song is a perfect example of the life I currently life.

I should probably feel cheap but I just feel free...

  • this song reminds me of my ex. actually, more she reminds me of it. ugh

  • 2 people don't know how to take it easy

  • I love this song :)

  • "Now I do as I please, and I lie through my teeth

Someone might get hurt, but it won't be me

Should probably feel cheap, but I just feel free

    And a little bit empty"

Man, I wish that things wernt easier said then done...

  • "Now I do as I please, and I lie through my teeth

Someone might get hurt, but it won't be me

Should probably feel cheap, but I just feel free

    And a little bit empty"

Your the man Conor, way to describe that feeling. Rather spot on

  • best bright eyes ever! :)

  • "I should probably feel cheap, but I just feel free."

....That one line just made me feel so much less guilty about some of the things I've done.

  • "And since then I've been so good at vanishing."

    Amazing.

  • I want to get "someone might get hurt, but it won't be me" tattooed somewhere on me.

but then i'd have some 'splaining to do in heaven =X

  • gosh i had this girl sleep with me after telling me all kinds of stuff of how perfect we were together and then out of no where she stopped and said she wants to sleep around before she gets serious.... wtf??

  • @Outlet30 thats probably cause you sucked in bed

  • @GummiXBearXMassacre oh no! definitely not. i actually rejected her after that cuz i was afraid she was a whore.. and my suspicions were right

  • I have this single :D

  • what is this song?

  • Odd, this is one of the songs by Bright Eyes that I probably relate to the most, and I relate to a lot of them, in one way or another.

  • i just can't stop listening to this song

    10 times in a row! :D

  • oberst is a genious, great great song...

  • one of his best song for suree!

  • If you stay too long inside my memory

I'll trap you in a song tied to a melody

And i'll keep you there so you can't bother me.

    Great lyrics!

  • I <3 Conor Oberst.

  • I have not yet heard a Bright Eyes song that I dislike. I am in love with this band.

  • a well written song leaves places between the lines for you to insert your life

  • You're all wrong and/or retarded. BRIGHT EYES HAS NOT BROKEN UP YET. They are reissuing One Jug of Wine with old songs that weren't released on the first one AND they are recording one last album. I know it's only youtube, but at least try to check your facts

  • @iwrotealife2

I agree, those lines are amazingly and beautifully written... As is the rest of the song. This has to be my favorite song of all time, and that's saying a lot cause I listen to a lot of music. Lol.

  • its about getting so hurt in the past that he wants to "love nothing."

-"now i do as i please and i lie through my teeth,

someone will get hurt but it wont be me.

since then i've been so good at vanishing."

    amazingly written.

  • they broke up... sad stuff

  • bright eyes didn't break up. Mike Mogis wanted to spend time with hsi family and conor didn't feel right calling the music he released bright eyes without Mike so he started MVB then MOF. They're doing a last bright eyes album before "closing that book forever." A remake of One Jug of Wine Two Vessels

  • So that was really the last album? For good? I was expecting more new stuff...

I guess those 4 tracks will do. The rerelease was still good. Gotta love the Bright Eyes and Neva Dinova combo.

  • is this conor oberst? omg... i need an answer.

  • Comment removed

  • yes. conor oberst is the lead singer of bright eyes

  • Yes. It is.

  • @theHirokoHojyo In the song? Yeah, thats Oberst singing.

  • @theHirokoHojyo HELL YES.

  • no its not

  • @theHirokoHojyo it is so obviously him...

  • @theHirokoHojyo yahh of course

  • @theHirokoHojyo

    no it's william fucking shatner.......

  • @leggyman23 COOOL bro, I think you saw that my question has already been answered. But thanks.

  • Um. I think that's it two old friends- that grew up together. They think that they could be more so they fool around. She realizes that she'll never be able to see him as anything but the little boy she grew up with. And she thinks that they should just go back to being friends. This really hurts him, so he refuses to love anyone again, and maybe just sleeps around.

  • I agree with your meaning.

  • @SummerRainnlovesyou - i agree, nicely said

  • I'd agree with

themedicdroidx10. I think it's the case of having a friend who he really likes and having sex (probably for the first time). The friend leaves in the morning and leaves the note as she's regretting taking his innocence. This hurts him, and he starts having random sex to get back the feeling he had that night, sleeping around, never staying for a relationship, never getting hurt because he doesn't care in the first place. It's a sad state of existence.

  • Its very sad.

    but yet somewhat fun.

  • @dtalbot1988 To all that I think it's more than just what the words say. Although that is exactly what the story is saying, Oberst wants you to get a little deeper than that. He is looking at being used for someone else's gains. This is especially hurtful when the person being used loves the other person. This makes you want to disappear. Unfortunately all your desire to vanish won't change you think- you will still be an object to who you loved.

  • @dtalbot1988 This song is abotu statutory rape. Conor Oberst said so in a concert:D

  • @WeMissTheStars Makes sense. The whole thing would be even more confusing for a mind still not fully mature. I think my comment is still valid.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh i think i got it:

It's about a guy who felt in love with an elder woman. So he had this dream about her and than he woke up. And figured out that he'll never be with her.

    Is that the right interpretation?

  • I always figured it was a younger couple, as in a college couple. She was extremely shy and he was young.

He things everything is good as the "blue as far as I can see" line.

Then he learns he lost his love by the line, "It's just once something dies you can't make it live." He then becomes depressed and wants her back.

Then he gets older and buys a prostitute, "I should probably feel cheep but I just feel free... and a little but empty."

He then wants her out of his mind.

    Just my opinion.

  • hehe you are the native and surely right.. besides your interpetration is much better than mine.

    Thank you so much

    I love this song

  • Haha being a native doesn't give me much more 'rightness' then a non-native.

  • good interpretation the song has a different meaning to all, but this song was written about a one night stand with a friend.

  • Yes, you're right haha. I forgot to say that. Haha yeah that was my interpretation. I guess the second mouse gets the cheese.

  • that's how I interpreted it, too. music is kind of subjective tho.

  • I've never thought that there can be a wrong interpretation of a song. Your interpretation is simply whatever you, personally, get out of it.

  • As right, I meant along the lines of, thats what I thought also.

  • He wakes up with the older woman gone and then starts doing the same thing with everyone else, never falling in love and always making sure he is the first to leave.

  • Great upload. Thanks
