How to fix problem! If you have a receipt for the Fluval FX5 contact Hagen @ 800-724-2436. Let them know whats going on. Before you call em. Ensure you dont have a polishing pad in the bottom. If it continues then call. They have an updated lid that will not send bubbles up through your return. If you dont have receipt. Cut the pipe at connection level on lid. On white part on lid cover spout hole completely on both ends with aqua stik epoxy. NO MORE MICROBUBBLES! Just plug both ends of tubes!
I had this problem. There are several things that can cause it. What I would recommend is you unplug it and make sure the valves are opened all the way where the water lines connect to the pump. Then I would make sure you do not use the fine foam type mesh. Those picked up so much debris in my tank that they would start to create tiny micro bubbles which I thought was from cavitation by the prop. Cause it run clear for about 6 weeks until I noticed the micro bubbles. Check out my channel.
Does the strainer at the bottom of the intake tube have to be 3 inches from the gravel top? My tank is deep and the strainer only reaches about 6 inches above the gravel. :(
The problem is from something called "cavitation" which is from a clogged filter. Essentially the impellar tips are unable to move the water so frictions heats it to a gas and gives you bubbles.
I have one of these filters but never had this problem. I'm betting that the drain at the bottom of the pump was not totally sealed (closed). If the pump is running it's creating a suction and will pull from any and all areas that are not sealed. Lube up all your seals.
dont forget your filter builds up air daily and will cycle off for a minute to release the trapped air every 24 hrs. and a minute or so after it's first started.
There is no reason for the filter to build up air if its not near an air source. If you use dissolved Co2 I hear that can get trapped in the canister but if not, there is no reason for it to build up with air.
i have a fluval 305 filter on my 55gallon turtle tank. It clouds up the water in a hurry like the ceramic filter media is falling apart in the canister. Has anyone else had this problem?
I had this same problem... it would also fill up with a lot of air.
make sure that any connections to your intake & outlet are submerged... also the polishing pads stop the flow of water and increase air buildup... take everything out except the ceramic chips (fill all 3 baskets with ceramics if you wish ) and the long white sponges around the baskets. This will solve your problem

I've also had the problem. After a long search I used vaseline around the lid and it works fine.

@AdirondackCichlids Its not heat. Its pressure differential Im pretty sure that pulls gas outta the water.

It may not be filtering properly but wouldn't the added dissolved O2 help?

If you are having the blue or white round polishing pads, remove them or clean regulary. They clog quickly and cause the micro bubbles.

cool it will help me check and prime my filter properly before testing and make sure it is not sucking in air nice aquarium

That is what a priming pump is for.
You did not prime it long enought.
I bet you only primed it up and down 5 times...... you need to do it like 20 or more times.

I don't need a priming pump with the Fx5. It primes its self.

You have air inside your filter.. I had the same problem with my Eheim 2028. Make sure everything in connected properly.

Notice the flow volume from the output, those bubbles should shoot across the tank. The filter is clogged and has already been cleaned by now.

I had the same problem, as soon as the filter media gets clogged it creates bubbles
