@BoondocksOfBoston i think there is a part 2 on the side thumbnail, not sure tho need to finish watching this before i click and see,but bed ways is right ways now so best i go home ways and get a bit of spatchka right right......
Clockwork Orange I think is almost prophetic of Britain in the 2000's, there really are neds like Alex in existence, violently beating people up for no reason and stealing, Britain in 1971 was nothing like this film, Britain in 2011 is a lot like this film!
I love the record store clip so much because I'd be semi-imagining like that too. Well, not Beethoven-esque, but still. This, and the apartment scene makes Alex more relatable for me because his love of music makes him more human and relatable.
Malcolm is gorgeous. Such a big crush on him!! (EXCITEMENT SQUEAK!) I wouldn't mind getting him off Santa Claus! I can just picture it now "dear Santa...Please leave Malcolm McDowell from 70s under the tree for me!....Thank You"
Wake up Christmas!!!! OMG!!! Your Mine!! All mine!!! (Big Sigh!) If only it was that easy....ha ha
This might just be the most annoying interviewer I've ever seen - or rather, heard. They were no doubt sitting there thinking: "Will you ever shut your mouth?"
@sssgv Alex didn't die... he jumped out of the building but didn't die... he ended up in hospital, where he was reprogramed back to his old behaviour (or possibly something more devious...)
@sssgv it's in French, but the last scene can be found n You Tube if you search for watch?v=yW5zQaMuWjc&feature=related The last scene is him in the hospital imagining himself 'doing it' with a woman in the snow while others watch.
@sssgv maybe when he said he was cured, he meant he was back the way he was before... here's someone reading the end of the book... doesn't sound like he's dead in the hospital there... I never heard ANYONE say he died at the end. youtube.com/watch?v=zMm8UhWvQLA
@switcherxx I am shocked anyone thought he died I seen the movie loads of times and that inspired me to read the book it was so obvious that the knock to his head made him go back to the way he was before, also as you probabley know at the end of the book he leaves hospital and bumps into his old droogie Pete and then all on his own he decides to change in the book he has a new set of droogies
@craigski75 On the contrary... Malcolm joked about being remembered as the person who killed Captain Kirk in the Star Trek "Generations" movie. He's done many interesting roles... check out his movie "If..."
@craigski75 I think McDowell is remembered just as much for the movie 'If....', as he was picked for the part of Alex in Clockwork Orange without even having to audition, all because his performance in that movie. If.... is also considered one of the best British films of all time, and if you haven't seen it, I recommend putting in the effort of finding a copy and watching it, as it's a brilliant film.
Poor Malcolm McDowell; he's remember for "If..." "A Clockwork Orange" and "O Lucky Man!" (and maybe "Caligula"); his range is actually much greater but he was type-cast.
@TheGatorfan93 Apart from what drucey pointed out, AIDS didn't exist at the time of the novel's publication. The first incidents of the disease weren't seen until the 80s. That said, though it is impossible that AIDS was Burgess' implication in saying that F. Alexander's wife was a victim of the modern age, it certainly is an interesting take on the line.
When the writer says ''his wife died of an illness, victim of the modern age'',i thought of something interesting .When i first watched this movie in early 91,at 15, aids was on everyones minds. And i thought maybe, with the writer's wife being raped by the four droogs, pete being the last in the ranks.''Hey,could pete have given her aids, since we don't see him again!?'' lol
@TheGatorfan93 I think it was because Stanley didnt like Burgess last chapter so he cut the Pete bit out, also in the book when Alex is in prison Georgie is killed by a man he Dim and Pete rob so when Alex is beaten up in the book it was Dim and Alex's rival Billy boy, I only read the book because I loved the film so much and it would have been good if Pete was in the final chapter and Alex changed on his own
Kubrick and Burgess predicted the 1981 electro-pop explosion, but it was very peaceful unlike here. The music, was more imaginative too, but predicting the future of human foibles is near impossible, isn't it?
An anti-hero is somebody who actually does something good, in a different way maybe, but in the end his purposes are "good" and that's all that matters to him.
Alex actually never changes his mind even at the end. He likes to do bad things, he wants to do bad things, he dreams about doing bad things. Btw, the movie also criticizes the way the Gov. is acting, since they decide to use a sorta mindcontrol therapy on him, so it could mislead on that matter. But he is defo a villain.
Personally I think both the book and movie are great, choosing between the two would prove futile and only be a reflection of one's personal prefernce. The movie's only real flaw, would probably be that the final chapter was cut out and the movie digresses from the notion that Alex can grow out of childish violence and bare intution. Then again, the ending fit the movie just fine but I'm sure Kubrick would have figured out a way to amaze the world one way or another.
@Elvis457 The flaw cannot be put on Kubrick's shoulders because the version he worked with the final chapter was cut by the American publishers. Kubrick didn't even realize that there was another chapter untill after the movie was made.
Actually the final chapter where alex renouces his life of crime and gets married only appeared in th first editions of the novel on the insistance of the publishing companies. all reissues of the novel ended like in the movie with alex simply being deprogrammed and free to follow his life of crime. Therefore the movie is virtually identical with the book.
@TVFREAKMAN Hi I read the book but did it end with Alex saying how he would like what Pete had e.g marrige or did he actually get married in my version after the hospital he is in the milk bar once again with 3 new droogs and he gets really bored of beating people up so he walks off on his own buys some milky chi and then bumps into Pete is this the ending you read?
Yes, that sounds like the ending of the book when I first read it. What I remember most is that the last chapter began just like the first with Alex saying: "What's it going to be then eh?" making the story come full circle.
You can tell from this interview that Anthony Burgess was a writer that had a true understanding and appreciation for the cinematic language of film. It's so rare that an author praises a film adaptation of their work, let alone admits that it betters their original work in certain aspects.
@TheAltair4 I guess so, he thought his book was mediocre at best. He was appalled at Kubrick for cutting a vital part of the book in the final release.

I hate to say it, but the MUSIC is the biggest and really the only thing that dates the film as being really old. There'
s other things like the car they steal abd the rear projection, but that can be forgiven more than the soundtrack in terms of sounding old as heck.
I LOVE the soundtrack though and listen to it often. ^_^
