This film that Clarkson have made "2 series ago" with Aston as a main character to support the idea of "cool-cars will be dead soon..." is a little peace of masterpiece, and I'm affraid he is right !
I keep my fingers crossed, and praise the .. Americans..:)
Their Moden Muscle: GT500 Mustangs , ZL1 Camaros, and 6,4 HEMIs in Challanger are really unique these days ...
Powerfull cars with reasinable price-stickers ... that's a great idea ...

Good , they dind't try to put nouvo-riche Por$che Cajen or Panamejra... :)
Clarkson also put Golf GTI very high on his best-cars-list ...
First proper hot-hatch , and very good from the start ! ... next generations couldnt repeat it's golden recepie.... simple, elegant and honest ... (what car today can match it ?!? ... maybe Clior RS ?!?)
You could probably relace this Golf only by equally great Peugeot 205 GTI ...
Yeah, Veyron is probably more impressive car over all, but I belive this McLaren gives You better ... "drivers expierience", and that's why it's more interesting (especially for car-journalist) than 1000+ bhp lux-VW-agen ... :)
but the f1 held the top speed record of 244mph for more than a decade i think im not completly sure about that. but I rather take a MacLaren F1 over a Veyron anyday. I dont like going bandwagon and the F1 is pretty rare seen as they made on 106 of them compared to all the veyrons. I've seen 7 different veyrons so far. I have onlt seen one beautiful MacLaren F1 since they came out. ONE and I will always remember it
I'm affraid the cars of this century will become less and less exciting. They get ever heavier, the engines get ever smaller. Naturally apirated engines are replaced by smaller, turbocharged engines. And soon enough we will see an electric Ferrari. And that will be the end of a wonderfull era. The end of the car. Because when the ICE dies, the excitement dies.
Unless our oil resources never end. Or we switch petrol to hydrogen(and i'm talking about combusting it, not changing into electricity)
@pringlesbbq Well i said time period, and by the cars they were going by different periods, and by a car revolution the F40 cant compete with the F1 with the top speed and carbon fiber, and many other things.
@loudblazer F40 was the first all carbon fibre car though. trust me i love the F1 so much, but the F40 is a totally different animal then the F1. both great cars
how exactly does the Porsche move the motoring world forward? If they had inclided the very first 911, then maybe. But in today's world where is the hydrid, EV or hydrogen/fuel cell car that will most likely set the trend for the next 20 years?
a GT3RS!? really i can think of 5 other cars more significant than that, Honda NSX, the first reliable supercar, Mazda MX5, a non british-british roadster with godlike handling, Audi Quattro, the AWD car that forever changed the face of Rallying, Ford GT40, a British American hybrid that beat Ferrari at Le Mans 4 times, and wait for it.................. the E28 BMW M5, the first super saloon that will forever be copied
@ptmww3 No ones gonna appreciate the GTR yet, that will become a collectors car in the future I can gurantee it. The bugatti veyron is pretty significant as well. the mini in their I gound the GTI to be a bit redundant.
Even though I am a solid Bugatti Veyron fan I have to agree that the McLaren F1 is more important than it is, yes the Veyron is faster and more complete but the McLaren is genesis, it's where the monsters of speed came from, it's what mattered and what matters.
@tankhunters Not to mention it was a usable hypercar, there have been people that have used them every day for years on autobahns at 200mph and it's N/A gold engine is fine with it.
The Veyrons service intervals are insanely short and expensive, the fact a Veyron is a production car is a mere technicality. All the arguments against a $200K glass rocket supercharged 1100Hp tuner apply to it.
@sup3rcars Thats entirely subjective, if you prefer more feel along with performance and don't mind sacrificing some comfort, then the GT3 RS is better and vice versa. To say the gt3 rs is a terrible car is wrong.
I'm so jealous. It would be cool to test different cars from different times and compare. Sure they are from different times but its fun to compare the standards of different times. At one time x amount of power or speed was the best but of course by today's standards not so great. Even just mundane cars such as mid-size cars have power that sports cars had in the 90s or earlier. Crazy!
Were the Mclaren jaguar and Porsche really significant to normal people? what about the range rover / land rover s1 which both broke ground, or the mercedes w123 which raised peoples expectations of what a reliable car should be and which motorised africa or the renault espace which invented space on a budget or the model t ford which introduced cars to the masses... i could go on- this was a bit dissapointing autocar- (although I do agree with the mini and the gti)
The F1 had a BMW engine it wasn´t even Mclaren´s own, the F1 technology on that car might have had some Ferrari tech, yes Mclaren has the tendency to steal Ferrari´s technology, it says a lot doesnt it, if Ferrari wanted they´d make a nut mobile faster than everyone else, but it´s not what the brand is about, and some people just don´t understand what a Ferrari is.
Oh and Lamborghini and the Miura only exist because mr. Ferrari told Mr Lamborghini to fuck off.
@rmcld Thats not necessarily true... Mr. Lamborghini actually decided to build his own line of Sport/super cars because he didn't like his Ferrari... So technically he told Mr Enzo to fuck off.
@twztd28 Wrong, Mr. Lamborghini told Mr. Ferrari he should improve something (clutch i believe) in his Ferrari, and Mr. Ferrari told him to fuck off and build his own car, the end.
@twztd28 oh no, i don´t even dream of owning a super car, but i am one of those ppl that recognises Ferrari´s history and passion, it´s the greatest super car brand in the history and still today, it rules above any other brand, it is the truth, you should all face it.
@rmcld I think that Porsche is a close contender for that title to... However Ferrari has produced more legendary and well known cars. So I guess that gives them an advantage...
@twztd28 true, it could be, it´s one of those 2, but Porsche only for sticking up with the 911, no other company has or will do that like Porsche did.
@rmcld Only 2 companies I can think of with that kind of consistency with model production would have to be the Corvette and the 911... Not really anything else.
@twztd28 yes, but the first 911 glimpse came out in 1920!!! lol that´s pre-war, and the whole "the engine is the rear and that´s final" thing also means alot, it shouldn´t work, yet it does just fine, and Porsche has tons of racing history too, the Vette comes from a big company, GM, and they didn´t really depended on it, unlike Porsche who was praticly 100% 911.
@rmcld Thats true GM's focus isn't on sports cars... Where as Porsche only produces sporting vehicles. With 28,000 wins in competitive racing Porsche. Is definitely the top dog there...
@Gman333Xferrari Seriously, if you (or any other dick on here) really need to ask why the finest drivers version of the 911 is in there then you don't even deserve to call yourself a car enthusiast!
3 out of 5 are British cars and 2 are german and no Italian car. Where is the F40, lancia delta integrale, audi quattro, ariel atom, nissan gtr and so on.
u forgot that mclaren f1 was the first car that was made of carbon fiber? that was a revolution in supercar industry. and it's still the fastest naturaly aspirated car in the world, and probably the most exciting super car
Throughout history, they are numerous great cars that should be in the top 5 here. Since this Autocar and is based in the UK, you can see why they pick these 5 rather than what all you lot suggested.
Mini - Huge impact in 60's UK. Hippy era's iconic car.
Jag - Well, it's British. Enough said.
McClaren F1 - Ultimate supercar of the age.
Golf GTi - With Peugeot 205 GTi destroyed the British car industry.
Yes, I grew up during that era and I had one on my wall.
Ferrari HAD to go quicker than a 959 and they did it by building a race car for the street.
In comparison to that the 959 was almost as fast and 100 more usable, a sports car with incredible performance and technology, and the typical Porsche usability.
Had Porsche wanted to ever make anything as insane as that, it would blow it away.
But Porsche is Porsche and Ferrari is Ferrari, Ferrari do not always make sense.
How is a Bugatti Veyron not on here? I realize not everyone loves the Veyron but for what that car did for the automotive world, how can it not be included here?
@TheStallion234 Bugatti Veyron did little for the automotive world, other than give everybody a car to oogle at that they couldnt afford. Ive watched many reviews and youd be hard pressed to find a single journalist who has prefered the veyron over the mclaren. Many have said its handling is piggish due to its size & weight. Nice piece of flashy technology, but not really a game changer.
@g0ing2n0where With all due respect, you're completely wrong. While many journalists may prefer driving the F1 over the Bugatti, not a single one has denied what it has done for the automotive world. In Jeremy Clarkson's own words, the Veyron did for the automotive world what Concord did for commercial flight. Personal preference is one thing, but there is no denying that the Veyron is a piece of automotive genius that is one of the most important cars of our time.
@TheStallion234 Well only time will tell if the veyron had a real impact on the motor industry. The mclaren f1 came out 18 years ago and its still regarded as one of the best supercars to date. I would like to argue that the veyron will not have the same kind of staying power. To me the concord was flashy and over the top, much like the veyron. I think you will be hard pressed to see others follow its style of ultimate top speed, instead going for a more balanced well rounded approach as the f1
@g0ing2n0where The Veyron IS the most complete, balanced and well rounded car ever. It's got top speed, fast around a track and it's a luxurious grand tourer. What more can a car be?
@g0ing2n0where When did this become a comparison between the Veyron and the F1? The F1 undoubtedly belongs on this list as one of the greatest cars of all time, I'm just arguing that the Veyron has made a mark on automotive history that warrants its place on the list as well, that's all.
@g0ing2n0where the funny thing is the Mclaren also handled like badly. Even compared to cars at its days because it produced so little downforce for the speed it has to archive.
@g0ing2n0where Its funny how you think that but people with opinions which matter such as top gear think that the veyron is much more! And how could it have not done that much for the automotive world? iTS THE FASTEST CAR IN THE WORLD IDIOT! Stop using smart vocabulary just so you sound like you have a clue when really, you dont!!! If it wasnt for the veyron we wouldnt have cars like the CCX and SSC aero because the point of those cars was to beat the veyron! nobody ever thinks of these things
@Mclaren3054 That's like saying the F1 broke the previous record holder's speed and that's it. You and I both know that the Bugatti Veyron did a lot for the automotive world.
You're picking milestone cars from the past. Here are better choices for what this post should be titled: 5) '641/2 Mustang. 4) 300SL Gullwing. 3) 288 GTO. 2) McLaren F1 1) Porsche 959
All five changed the industry and were the beginning/cause of major rivalries or even a completely different genre of cars. All five were not only first but also dominated it's rivals and were springboards in technology/ideas for future cars, such as the GTO, which is basically the F40 with a earlier body type.
The interior noise difference between them all is amazing. F1 is awsome but what cars hp aside did it influence? Hypercars are heavier and have ever more driving aids.
Kinda makes you wonder what the next century will really be like. Who knows, by 2111 they might be testing flying cars or jet packs. Kinda makes you wish you could live forever to see everything that humans are going to create.
1973 Honda Civic, it changed the world for ever, it changed how people thought about Japan, and that cars could be reliable. and destroyed the US car industry and exposed how shitty there products really where to the American public. NSX, F40, 959 all need to be on that list as well.
@sspope Really? are you serious? The British car industry does not exist because of the Japanese, (and a striking workforce). The civic made a impact every where in the world. The Japanese manufacturing techniques made an impact every where.
@seroyer2 One of the most idiotic statements I've read in a long time. There were many factors as to why the Civic was successful in the US, none of them being that Japanese cars were more reliable. One big factor was of the oil embargo with rising fuel prices of the 70's and the need for a small FUEL EFFICIENT car in the US. As far as "destroying" the US car industry, you need to pull your head out from were the sun don't shine.
@seroyer2 In the 70's... No offence or anything but the 70's here were full of booming muscle cars. My family is a huge mixture of GM and Mopar nuts. They will tell you better then anyone that any early 70's/late 60's muscle car was a dream. Not to mention that quite honestly things were made better back then than they are now... The 80's is where it all went down hill.
Why would you do a gt3 rs and not the 959??? and the McLaren wouldn't exist without the f40. The only two i agree with are the Mini and the Golf because they both invented a whole new market.
As an avid Autocar reader I can tell you that they never fully roadtested the Ferrari F40, neither was it in any way revolutionary in its design when presented in 1987, not in the way the McLaren F1 was.
The F40 is essentially a very modified Ferrari 308, and since around 1300 of them were made it wasn't that rare either. The Porsche 959 was almost as fast and technically way more advanced at the time.
@tonicroatia The Muria was what got the ball rolling in the supercar world. The F40, a fantastic car in its own right is not a game changer imo. The 288 GTO is also a better car and spawned the F40.
@tonicroatia Well not really. Most modern supercars are all techfests and the F40 isn't that. The Porsche 959 maybe, but not the F40. I do agree with you when you say it should've been in the top 5 because I too think it's bloody marvelous.
@tonicroatia Apparently they had to choose the very best one - Specialists and connoisseur consider the Miura (1966) as THE supercar which set the trend (V12/ rear central engine, big power...) At the time Enzo Ferrari didn't want to hear about any rear engine in his road cars but finally had to build one to really compete with Sant Agata. End of the story.
Wow what a fukin surprise 3 british cars and 2 german cars

Throughout history, they are numerous great cars that should be in the top 5 here. Since this Autocar and is based in the UK, you can see why they pick these 5 rather than what all you lot suggested.
Mini - Huge impact in 60's UK. Hippy era's iconic car.
Jag - Well, it's British. Enough said.
McClaren F1 - Ultimate supercar of the age.
Golf GTi - With Peugeot 205 GTi destroyed the British car industry.
GT3RS - Well, your guess is as good as mine.

INSPIRING
zephyrod 11 months ago
The F40 was over hyped.

TheStallion234 11 months ago
@TheStallion234 Bugatti Veyron did little for the automotive world, other than give everybody a car to oogle at that they couldnt afford. Ive watched many reviews and youd be hard pressed to find a single journalist who has prefered the veyron over the mclaren. Many have said its handling is piggish due to its size & weight. Nice piece of flashy technology, but not really a game changer.
g0ing2n0where 11 months ago 14
@g0ing2n0where With all due respect, you're completely wrong. While many journalists may prefer driving the F1 over the Bugatti, not a single one has denied what it has done for the automotive world. In Jeremy Clarkson's own words, the Veyron did for the automotive world what Concord did for commercial flight. Personal preference is one thing, but there is no denying that the Veyron is a piece of automotive genius that is one of the most important cars of our time.
TheStallion234 11 months ago
@TheStallion234 Well only time will tell if the veyron had a real impact on the motor industry. The mclaren f1 came out 18 years ago and its still regarded as one of the best supercars to date. I would like to argue that the veyron will not have the same kind of staying power. To me the concord was flashy and over the top, much like the veyron. I think you will be hard pressed to see others follow its style of ultimate top speed, instead going for a more balanced well rounded approach as the f1
g0ing2n0where 11 months ago
@g0ing2n0where The Veyron IS the most complete, balanced and well rounded car ever. It's got top speed, fast around a track and it's a luxurious grand tourer. What more can a car be?
TheOak82 11 months ago
@g0ing2n0where When did this become a comparison between the Veyron and the F1? The F1 undoubtedly belongs on this list as one of the greatest cars of all time, I'm just arguing that the Veyron has made a mark on automotive history that warrants its place on the list as well, that's all.
TheStallion234 11 months ago
@g0ing2n0where I'm a bug fan, but what you said rings true
peanuts2105 11 months ago
@g0ing2n0where the funny thing is the Mclaren also handled like badly. Even compared to cars at its days because it produced so little downforce for the speed it has to archive.
Desmonddd2002 6 months ago
@g0ing2n0where Its funny how you think that but people with opinions which matter such as top gear think that the veyron is much more! And how could it have not done that much for the automotive world? iTS THE FASTEST CAR IN THE WORLD IDIOT! Stop using smart vocabulary just so you sound like you have a clue when really, you dont!!! If it wasnt for the veyron we wouldnt have cars like the CCX and SSC aero because the point of those cars was to beat the veyron! nobody ever thinks of these things

@TheStallion234 FINALLY broke the f1 speed record thats it
Mclaren3054 11 months ago
@Mclaren3054 That's like saying the F1 broke the previous record holder's speed and that's it. You and I both know that the Bugatti Veyron did a lot for the automotive world.
TheStallion234 11 months ago
@TheStallion234 true but there are still other cars that were in here that have had much greater impacts.

Echoboy2002 11 months ago
Ferrari F40, Bugatti Veyron maybe... These are the most important cars of the past 2 decades

MX5 missing (best selling roadster)
so is the original Fiat 500 (original super mini)
Original Jeep.. Citröen DS (the frech car trippin on LSD)
M3 and Audi Quattro ..
then again you have2 realize that you cannot make a top 5 list when you have2 consider so many cars and so many peoples favourites..
any way congratts AutoCar on your 5000th Rewiev!

Should have replaced the 911 for a F40 and the Golf with a NSX.
jonathan102 11 months ago
1973 Honda Civic, it changed the world for ever, it changed how people thought about Japan, and that cars could be reliable. and destroyed the US car industry and exposed how shitty there products really where to the American public. NSX, F40, 959 all need to be on that list as well.
seroyer2 11 months ago 22
@seroyer2
forget the civic... just because it was popular doesnt mean it belongs in this fine company
however i have to agree that the NSX 959 and F40 are all suitable here... especially the 959...
although if i was to pick a ferrari to be in this top five i would pick the 250 GTO over the F40... without question
powderhund14 11 months ago
@seroyer2 But, that's how things worked in the US. In UK, it never made an impact.
sspope 11 months ago
@sspope Really? are you serious? The British car industry does not exist because of the Japanese, (and a striking workforce). The civic made a impact every where in the world. The Japanese manufacturing techniques made an impact every where.
seroyer2 11 months ago
@seroyer2 One of the most idiotic statements I've read in a long time. There were many factors as to why the Civic was successful in the US, none of them being that Japanese cars were more reliable. One big factor was of the oil embargo with rising fuel prices of the 70's and the need for a small FUEL EFFICIENT car in the US. As far as "destroying" the US car industry, you need to pull your head out from were the sun don't shine.
jamoes95ta 11 months ago
@seroyer2 In the 70's... No offence or anything but the 70's here were full of booming muscle cars. My family is a huge mixture of GM and Mopar nuts. They will tell you better then anyone that any early 70's/late 60's muscle car was a dream. Not to mention that quite honestly things were made better back then than they are now... The 80's is where it all went down hill.
twztd28 8 months ago
Why would you do a gt3 rs and not the 959??? and the McLaren wouldn't exist without the f40. The only two i agree with are the Mini and the Golf because they both invented a whole new market.

@tonicroatia
The Porsche 959 was almost as fast and technically way more advanced at the time.

sktfourlif 11 months ago
@tonicroatia The Muria was what got the ball rolling in the supercar world. The F40, a fantastic car in its own right is not a game changer imo. The 288 GTO is also a better car and spawned the F40.
SeigeCJ 11 months ago
@tonicroatia Well not really. Most modern supercars are all techfests and the F40 isn't that. The Porsche 959 maybe, but not the F40. I do agree with you when you say it should've been in the top 5 because I too think it's bloody marvelous.
kartkidchun 11 months ago
@tonicroatia Apparently they had to choose the very best one - Specialists and connoisseur consider the Miura (1966) as THE supercar which set the trend (V12/ rear central engine, big power...) At the time Enzo Ferrari didn't want to hear about any rear engine in his road cars but finally had to build one to really compete with Sant Agata. End of the story.
