Some of the "Zoomers" (from this, and other early seasons) would eventually surface on the PBS (and later syndicated) series "Infinity Factory", along with Irene Cara.
I can remember when they were thinking of canceling this show after season 2...and they requested that you send in a picture of yourself...i think half our school sent in photos and Zoom returned the following year !
Maura, Luiz and David seem to be gay. I wonder if they grew up to be straight? Bernadette turned out to be a new age freak that is using her Facebook and former Zoom status to promote new age healings. Jay and Leon seemed to be the only halfway normal ones
@markxxx21 Never mind about the Gays Lesbos and Silly Bernadette. What about how this left wing crap financed by Multinationals and the US Government has destroyed the Educational system of the United States and sent all the jobs overseas to China and India where their economys are BOOMING not ZOOMING!!!!
I used to NEVER miss this show on Sunday night!! I'd make sure that my bath and dinner were both done before "Zoom" and "The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew" came on!! I tried to watch the new "Zoom" about i year ago and I couldn't do it!! It STUNK!!!!!!!!!! Plus it wasn't the same as these old ones, the old ones where MUCH better!!!!!!!!!!
i think it would really great if PBS produced a ZOOM "Where Are They Now " special. I would love to know what happened to these guys & what some of them chose to do with their lives.
Last time this video was up: "I loved Zoom but Luiz is insane. I'm sure he's cleaning toilets somewhere. He has no clue what he's doing in the last segment. He doesn't even sing because he is so retardly focused on his little airplane move. Oh--and he has no sense of rhythym whatsoever. Bernadette rocks though."
Bernadette RULED! The others were just her supporting cast. This show was very diverse for mid '70s tv. I remember tv being very white bread back then. My word was rye bread without those nasty ass seeds. I would think to myself that it didn't resemble my neighborhood or my school. And it really didn't resemble grandma's neighborhood. Grandma's neighborhood looked like old school Telemundo. But Grandma looked like an extra from "Fiddler On The Roof".
@Jefgg Holy shit, I haven't laughed this hard in a while. Thank you so much! Man, Zoom is AWESOME! I grew up with the 90's version, so seeing this one is just fantastic. The bell bottoms were awesome and yeah, you're spot on about Bernadette and the diversity comment. Man... The 70's looked like awesome times and the 90's, I know, were just beyond compare. There really is nothing better than having a good childhood.
@Shaprika My childhood wasn't all bell bottoms and ringer tee shirts. It was hardscrabble at best. TV was too frequently my babysitter and friend. And "ZOOM" was an excellent show. It was a cut above the rest of the slop on tv back then. Back in the '70s only people who lived in the mountains had cable tv. We had about a half dozen channels on VHF with an antenna. And the reception for UHF channels was horrendous. I don't miss messing around with antennas.
Saddly, as a kid, i didnt get a chance to watch all the episodes. We had 1 TV in the house and I had 2 brothers. We used to always fight over what we were goign to watch. Fortunately, sometimes Id win and we'd watch Zoom :) I dont remember all the cast but i know this was the last season I watched I think. I recognize most of this cast (except Ann and Maura. dont remember them at all).
Oh my god these posts are great...well from the ones who grew up in the 70's and the ones who did not and can appreciate the Original ho hum cast. The 90's/2000 casts are like Jaws 3,4 & 5..or stupid Jar jar binks in later star wars..just doesn't cut it. Check Leon's head snapping at 1:04.I think David gets attacked by flys at 1:11 and I think Luis burps at 1:20.Then you see mastermind Jay @1:17 thinking to himself I will snag Bernadette at the very end as long Luis doesn't interfere.
OMG I remember a long time ago watching an episode of the new zoom and they showed a clip of how Bernadette does that arm trick and I've been amazing people ever since lol
@kfadmirer Maybe the reason the producers starting making them wear shoes was for health reasons! :D Look at the opening credits where they hold their feet over their heads during the dancing. Their soles are almost black from the dirt on the studio floors. Since bare feet was a big part of the image of Zoomers, like their striped rugby shirts, I wonder why someone in charge of the show didn't think to make sure the floors were clean before taping?
@pardyhardly Good point. The same thing must have happened on "Punky Brewster," because I remember how Soleil Moon Frye would climb into that flip-flop bed and reveal her soles, and they'd be solidly black! I thought the same thing as I did for "Zoom" -- "why don't the producers of 'Punky Brewster' clean those floors?" :D
But I have to revise the question a little: if the floor wax was making their feet dirty, why didn't they clean the waxed floors before taping? Just asking.....
I used to like the films on doing different things. I saw a short ZOOM segment on Amateur Radio in the early 1970's. Grew up and became and electrical engineer!
@Dulcimerist David was a drop-dead cutie! I wonder where he is now and what he's doing, and most of all if he's happy. I wish him a world of happiness, because I think he deserves it -- he came across as a genuine sweetie.
A few of these kids can't catch a beat. I'm slightly too young to have watched this version and about 10 years too old to have been watching the most recent one ( even though I secretly did)
I remember as a kid wishing I could be as old and cool as the zoom kids... now I laugh and think of what little ones they look like! Hmm, but maybe the guys have receeding hairlines and the girls have stretch marks and crow's feet... aging aint for the faint of heart!
You obviously missed the episode where Bernadette demonstrated how she did the arm thing. I remember it clearly and still do the arm thing, even in my dotage...lol
The most talented of the ZOOM casts in the 1970s. They were diverse, quirky, and utterly likable. You could identify and distinguish the different Zoomers then, as oppose to the kids from the 1990s.
i want those pic of them now as we know we all want to see what they look and are doing now right ?how much they changed, anyone know where to info.leon has an african drum group and hangs out alot with beradet yao,i have some pics of here and himshe also sings sometimes with the boston pops, has healing cds ,all of them from the 1st cast hang out with her at her home often she says.
Ahhhh those were the days when any of us over 35 or older could watch TV shows like this one and remember not having to worry about such things like...paying bills, college tuition, rent, mortgage payments or any number of concerns trivial, frivilous or serious.
Anyone remember the name of a boy who appeared as some sort of radio announcer? His first name (I think) was Gil and in one clip they showed him with Howard Cosell.
OMG!!! I LOVE you for posting this! The thing I remembered most vivdly was Bernadette's arm thing, but other stuff cam back while watching this. My brother and I would drape ourselves over arm chairs like they were the letters and we'd jump off and sing the intro, LOL.
As an African-American that grew up watching this show, I didn't get that impression from the credits or the show. Also, Leon (Mobley) was probably shown with the drums because of an early affinity for them and he is now an acclaimed percussionist, having played drums with Ben Harper and Michael Jackson. Zoom and the Electric Company were great for non-traditional casting.
So, stick to your guns, gigisdad, but be mindful of your aim.
@gilgamess Thank you for your contribution in exploding the stereotype of African-Americans which gigisdad seems committed to perpetuating. I'm a red-haired, freckle-faced (and very white) Irish colleen, and I've never understood why these stupid stereotypes keep rearing their ugly heads. Your elegant use of Englilsh (as opposed to the non-elegance, to put it politely, of gigisdad) helps put that ignorant claim of his to rest. Of course, we Irish are all a bunch of drunks and brawlers, right?
@erinthelass Thanks for the kind words. Stereotypes exist, because personal worlds first expand and then shrink. One learns what they do about the world and then defines it in whatever way is "best" for them. gigisdad was trying to be funny and the joke misfired. Sadly, with this new mode of communication, mode and intent get lost in the mix.
P.S. My parents are smiling down at you regarding my grammar.
@gilgamess You're welcome. Your parents are not only smiling down at you for your splendid command of the King's English (or is it the Queen's? Does it depend on who's reigning?) but they're also smiling for the obviously fine child they raised, and who turned out to be a such an intelligent, sensitive and insightful adult. Your forgiving nature toward gigisdad and his "misfired" humor in this Brave New World of uber-communication speaks volumes about you -- and your parents' parenting.
@gilgamess And, might I add, some of us Irish-Americans are bad spellers! I of course meant to write "English" and not "Englilsh," but even we Irish "gingers" are prone to making typos! :D
I think when this series ends, the Boston postmaster should decommission Box 350, physically remove the front panel of the P.O. box and send it to the Smithsonian to put next to Mr. Rogers' sweater.
This show was way ahead of its time. This is around 1972 and these kids were the coolest kids on TV. You young whippersnappers don't know what you are talking about when you call its racist. All us kids wanted to be like the Zoom kids or at least like one of them.
I don't think its racist. Its Cultural. Big difference. Cultural difference is a beautiful thing. Without it, this world would be a very boring place.
I agree! That was one of my 2 favorite casts. The other I liked best was Season 3, Cast 1 with Danny, Edith, Lori, Neil, Bernadette, Leon and Luiz. I think they were all hunched over touching the floor and Edith ran out at the last second to join them. Love to see that again.
this makes me so happy that someone gets this! this is season 2, cast 2! exactly right. now if only we could get our hands on the opening for season 2, cast 1 (maura, kenny, ann, david, tracey, nancy, jay)
I'm the only kid who could do Bernadette's arm trick!

I remeber hearing it.

It was the Juelz Santana/Lil Wayne, "Black Republican" spoof, performed by Affion Crockett and some other guy. The Asian broad is amazing btw.
