so...wait, is enders game the first book? can someone tell me the chronological order of the books? because ive read two, enders game (wich im not done with) and shadow of hedgemon.
@calladus123 they're kinda confusing. . . it's remarkably difficult to read them in the correct 'order'. Card follows two main characters in his Kids in Space novels, Ender and Bean. OF course he still has flashes to other characters that seem uninvolved but become crucial in the end, but basically the storylines and the novels themselves follow around Ender and Bean. Now the problem with this, is that ender and Bean don't really have much direct interaction after Battle School. Contd.
@calladus123 So you'll really have two books for each period of time. For example, Ender's Game is the story of battle school and the destruction of the buggers from Ender's perspective. Ender's Shadow is the same timeline (basically) from Bean's perspective. The books continue on that way, but will occasionally cross-reference one another.
Having just gotten into Ender's universe, I can't say which is the best. But I can definitely say I'm happy with the order I'm ready them in, as follows:
Ender's Game
A War of Gifts
Ender in Exile
First Meetings (In Ender's Universe)
Speaker for the Dead (*currently reading)
And I'm told the Ender's Shadow series is just as good (if not better, depending who you ask). So you have that to consider.
But you should definitely read the short story Investment Counselor before you read Speaker for
@SmexyTrailerz I hold both Enders Game and Enders Shadow in equal high regards. Bean, is an awesome character! I'm now making my way through Shadow of the Giant. The entire series is remarkable.
To cast the movie, search for Dillon Stevens. He is perfect to play Ender. He can act and dance. Great control of the body will be needed for the Zero Gravity Battle School scenes. Dillon could easily span the age range. Look at him.
For some reason I'm hoping there will never be an Ender's game movie. I would be afraid my imagination of the series would be completely attenuated by incompetent film directors.
That's an awesome concept (I read in the 80's) which ironically seems to parallel my Gulf War experience, settling in NC, and not returning to NYC. I know OSC lives in Greensboro, & no offense, but I am not... home.
it boggles my fucking mind how the hollywood execs let the rights to this lapse and are content with bullshit remakes and farty reboots, yet they won't give us a movie we have been begging for for the last 20 fucking years. a movie that, if done right, has the potential to be the greatest sci-fi blockbuster of all-time, and one we would literally throw wheelbarrows of money. but no. keep giving us conan- the retardarian and justin beiber 3d: who stole my dick?
I like Card's stories, but the trait of his writing that you're praising is exactly what most people don't like about his style. He's a stream of consciousness writer, and that invariably means constantly telling the reader everything that's going on in the minds of the characters instead of allowing the reader the pleasure of figuring things out for him/herself. Xenocide is the best example of this and the worst of the series by far. Mr. Card eschews the _show, don't tell_ maxim to a fault.
@gmdinformation See Xenocide is one of my favorites of the series. and its because he delves so much into the characters and the philosophy of the universe they live in that I absolutely love.
@gotohemp Really because I know he is conservative and is against gay marriage but I haven't heard him say one thing that is actually hateful of gays, just where he disagrees with them. That is very different from "gay bashing". You don't have to agree with everyone in order to respect them. By your logic anyone who is for gay marriage and opposed to those who are against it would be "straight bashers" which they of course are not.
I'm 12 years old, reading this book and it's awesome. It's really strange because I hate books, and for the last 2 years I have only completely read only 1 chapter book. I had to read this book for my language arts class.
I prefer to say that I belong to the wave who loved Ender's Game dearly but were disappointed with his other works which tried to cut loose ends and make the plot more wholly. The Shadow quartet didn't do it for me, except Ender's Shadow. And because I read them in story order, I was too glad to be freed from the Shadow quartet to be very optimistic about Ender in Exile. I tried to enjoy it wholeheartedly.
I did. Though I was disappointed at so many things, so many.
I just read Ender's Game -> Ender in Exile -> Speaker for the Dead -> Xenocide, and am currently about 3/4ths of the way through Children of the Mind. Anyone who thinks all the books after Ender's Game suck, simply are wrong. The books have more more depth, and a lot of philosophical discussion takes place that I never realized was within the scope of an author who claims to be a Mormon. They're very well written, besides a few contradictions and hypocrisies that never seem to get resolved.

Well, as far as the books go, Ender's Game tends to be the best as it hooks you into it the best. A lot of people prefer the Shadow Series because it expands on Petra and Peter and of course Bean. Whereas as the sequels for Ender's Game were slower paced. But in my opinion Speaker > Any book in the shadow series.
Exile was really good. You probably would need to read Ender's Game at least though. But the last little bit, though rushed, was awesome. Ender Wiggin doesn't lose. And it showed that.
i'm about half way through ender in exile. next to ender's game and ender's shadow, this is my favorite. i'm really hoping to get the comics (i can't find them in borders!) also, i hope that there will be a movie or video game of this series some day ^__^ that would be epic
I would say that Orson Scott Card is one of the best sci-fi writers of all time. The way he writes being so insightful and psychologically curious, in this interview he speaks like the novels are mere and simple. This man, I credit immensely for his talent in writing. One doesn't stop reading to think about what the author was thinking when he wrote a particular part, because it is as smooth and unpredictable as a real life story. The Ender series are a fantastic piece of writing. Period.
@SavyM123 i agree. ender's game is one of my favorite books of all time. it's actually the book that got me into reading in the first place :) ... i think him and anne mccaffrey are the best scifi writters.
The sequals we're not meant to be action - packed books, they are focused on alien and human relations. The sequels are very good but do not expect them to be Ender's game
Now i suggest that you read the Shadow series, the first book (shadow of the hegemon) is Ender's game but from bean's perspective. But the sequels to that book is actually all about land side war and world politics. And those ARE action packed and very good
Well i just got done reading the very first book. I was reading the Shadow children series because i got interested in them. well i got to 10th grade. and :P they don't have any of the shadow children but my teacher recommended this book and like i said i finished the first 1 today it was great.. kinda ended a little different than i thought tho because it ended after i thought it was originally going to.
if you have not read bean's story, imagine ender, on mental steroids. I liked it much, much better. bean ftw.
but i recommend everyone read the entire saga of both. great series, great writing. i just picked up ender's shadow again a few days ago and about half way through, such a good book.
this book is amazing!! the first one i read for school. next year. i just finished it today!!! i thought it would be horrible! its awesome, amazing! i love it! make the second part!
these are the best book ive ever read, both the bean series and the ender series(though i like bean better), i read enders game, and now im reading all of the books following it religiously
@EddyDraks I never finished Speaker for the Dead. I just couldn't get through it. Probably because I was expecting it to be more of a straight up sequel to Ender's game that would be similar to it,I probably should of thought of it as more of a story of its own instead. I didn't really like it that much though.
Ender's Game is my favourite book ever, but somehow I feel that a comic book wouldn't be able to do it justice. You take the depth and emotion from scene's like the Stilson one, and put it into some dorky cartoon form. It just doesn't work.
i think if they found the right director then it could be a good movie, just the actors would be hard, they would have to get 6 year olds who could play the role of a 30 year old
I have read this book and i liked it, i have been a fan of orson scott card for years and years, but this time i have to disagree with him. The book is relentless when it comes to name dropping, so i advice you to read at least enders game and the shadow series. When that is said there is A LOT of nuances that changes during this series. I tend not to read them as flaws, but either character development, or the authors attempt to get it just right.
Man, I need to read this one. Ender's Game is my favorite book of all time, I haven't read A war of Gifts or Ender in Exile... and here I called myself a fan.
Oh God I want to meet this guy. Everything about Card just says you could get along with him. The Ender and Shadow series were some of the best books Ive ever read.
I really liked your video and your channel. If you need any help getting this video or channel exposed I use a site called tubeviews.(net) It has really helped like 20 of my main videos get to the top in position. Its nice.
First off, you spelled the name wrong, and it's not like it's obscure or anything so...way to fail.
Plus...Ender never wants revenge. Ever. His entire fighting style is so that there IS no revenge, or if there is, it's his enemies who want revenge on him. Ender never loses. Read the books dude.
You're an idiot, who would be commenting here that didnt read the books?? Also how do you know he never wanted revenge? Are you O.S Card?? I seriously doubt it, and so what if they spelled it wrong....GET A LIFE!!!
It's easy to find a bunch of random movies on youtube, it doesn't have to mean that you've read the books. Plus, I know that Ender doesn't want revenge because I HAVE read all the books, and it's completely against Ender's character. In fact, his whole fighting style is based on NOT having revenge. That's just how it is.
1) If you honestly think someone with the username Enderwiggan1 who is commenting on an Enders Game video hasnt read the books, you're obviously mental, so in your words "Way to fail"
2) Who are you to explicitly claim that Ender didnt want revenge when that was never stated by the author?
3) Youd think that someone from Ireland which has one of the richest literary traditions of any country would have the foresight to realise that BOOKS ARE OPEN TO INTERPRETATION
The thing is. i bought both ender and the shadow series at the same time. but. i didn't start reading the shdw series until ender in exile came out. so i actually read exile before i started the shdws. I can tell where bean ending is going. it looks disappointing, but also it seems to make logical sense. and ender's ending felt alil bit like a disney's ending, but it also fitted the part really well. but one would wonder if scott card would do a series on the childen of the mind.
I enjoyed both Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. As for comparing both the original series and the branch story, I prefer the Ender's Shadow storyline. It is just more engaging.
I've Read all of the Ender's Series and it was EPIC. none of any of the single books was my favorite cause i saw it as a complete series. and the whole thing was the best. I'm now reading the Shadows Series and It is so good that i can almost say it's better than the ender series but i can't say that cause it was also very much epic. Both series is worth reading.
Uhhh...put that series down. Right now. Do not pick it up again ever. EVER!!! The ending is TOTALLY not worth it. I'm not going to screw it up for you, but seriously, don't finish it! the ending stinks!!!!
well i'm just on the verge of finishing the last shadow book. ur kinda late lol. but yea so far it's still been very good. but i'll let u know what i think when i finish it
If you truly want to finish the series, you're going to have to read Ender in Exile. That puts to rest a lot of the cliffhangers at the end of Shadow of the Giant. Even with the brilliant ending of Exile, Bean still has a crappy ending. But if you like it, that's your choice. I'm sure there are many that don't like Ender's ending, but for the most part I'm pretty happy with it. Be sure to let me know what you think when you're done with Shadow of the Giant though. :-D
But that would seriously make a good movie. In the sequel, ender is trying to live a life in peace but as he enters a new planet he finds out there are PREDATORS and TERMINATOR ROBOTS there.
I stand by my statement. Only the first 3 are worth reading. Everything else regarding the Chinese planet and the Japanese planet, the virus alien, the whole trying to kill his AI friend are crap.
I also didn't like his Bean spin off. Trying to make his brother into a saint is unbelievable.
They're all worth reading, and peter was never a truly evil person.. he was a child, get over it. Once again.. they're all worth reading, don't listen to this moron, the bean books are some of his best work.
you're just a fucking idiot who don't know anything. Peter wanted to conquer the world since he was a kid. Card just make him into this supposed complex saint and failed miserably. Everybody wants to root for the good guy so Card made him into into it in order to sell books.
The first two books of the Ender's Game series are very good and that's why they won awards. Later books just fail miserably so they didn't win any award. From a literary standpoint, the later books are crap.
Yeah, winning no huge awards means a book is horrible, right
-___-
I enjoyed Xenocide and Children of the Mind even more than Ender's Game. Speaker of the Dead is my absolute favoriate, but the last two are also great achievements. Fleshing out Novinha's family, and the relations between the two species.
Plus, the existential and philosophical issues [and "theories" you could say] that the books rose are fantastic in and of themselves. They have lent themselves to some great discussions.
I agree with Jackson here, the ideas expressed in the later Ender and Bean books are truly worth reading. It would be pretty sad to live in a world where writers didn't evolve their characters to continue to tell a story. :(
@aquasaber ... No Im not, but I know bullshit when I hear it. Thanks for the question.

It just doesn't work.
alexthecasualgamer 2 years ago
the comic book will do more justice than the movie studios will.
so excited and filled with dread to finally see it on the big screen one day.

i think if they found the right director then it could be a good movie, just the actors would be hard, they would have to get 6 year olds who could play the role of a 30 year old
KipSP 2 years ago
@KipSP I think the director/writer of District 9 would be a great choice for making an Ender's Game movie.

they should give scott card a medal or something for writing EG

Enders game would be the best video game ever o.o lol anyways THIS ISH MY FAV BOOK
Kewnaii 2 years ago
I have read this book and i liked it, i have been a fan of orson scott card for years and years, but this time i have to disagree with him. The book is relentless when it comes to name dropping, so i advice you to read at least enders game and the shadow series. When that is said there is A LOT of nuances that changes during this series. I tend not to read them as flaws, but either character development, or the authors attempt to get it just right.

Oh God I want to meet this guy. Everything about Card just says you could get along with him. The Ender and Shadow series were some of the best books Ive ever read.
Yeah Peter> Ender> Bean.
TheAuraAngel 2 years ago
If I was half as good a writer as Card, I could die happy.
Also Peter>Ender.

Whoa whoa whoa, wait a minute.
Ellidora 2 years ago
You're an idiot, who would be commenting here that didnt read the books?? Also how do you know he never wanted revenge? Are you O.S Card?? I seriously doubt it, and so what if they spelled it wrong....GET A LIFE!!!
Fianna10 2 years ago
It's easy to find a bunch of random movies on youtube, it doesn't have to mean that you've read the books. Plus, I know that Ender doesn't want revenge because I HAVE read all the books, and it's completely against Ender's character. In fact, his whole fighting style is based on NOT having revenge. That's just how it is.
Ellidora 2 years ago
1) If you honestly think someone with the username Enderwiggan1 who is commenting on an Enders Game video hasnt read the books, you're obviously mental, so in your words "Way to fail"
2) Who are you to explicitly claim that Ender didnt want revenge when that was never stated by the author?
3) Youd think that someone from Ireland which has one of the richest literary traditions of any country would have the foresight to realise that BOOKS ARE OPEN TO INTERPRETATION
Fianna10 2 years ago
The thing is. i bought both ender and the shadow series at the same time. but. i didn't start reading the shdw series until ender in exile came out. so i actually read exile before i started the shdws. I can tell where bean ending is going. it looks disappointing, but also it seems to make logical sense. and ender's ending felt alil bit like a disney's ending, but it also fitted the part really well. but one would wonder if scott card would do a series on the childen of the mind.
Ericwong2ooo 2 years ago
I enjoyed both Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. As for comparing both the original series and the branch story, I prefer the Ender's Shadow storyline. It is just more engaging.
DragonmagRT 3 years ago
Just finished reading the book. Enjoyed it immensely! Definitely one to just sit down and read all the way through.
DragonmagRT 2 years ago
I've Read all of the Ender's Series and it was EPIC. none of any of the single books was my favorite cause i saw it as a complete series. and the whole thing was the best. I'm now reading the Shadows Series and It is so good that i can almost say it's better than the ender series but i can't say that cause it was also very much epic. Both series is worth reading.
Ericwong2ooo 3 years ago
Uhhh...put that series down. Right now. Do not pick it up again ever. EVER!!! The ending is TOTALLY not worth it. I'm not going to screw it up for you, but seriously, don't finish it! the ending stinks!!!!
Ellidora 2 years ago
well i'm just on the verge of finishing the last shadow book. ur kinda late lol. but yea so far it's still been very good. but i'll let u know what i think when i finish it
Ericwong2ooo 2 years ago
If you truly want to finish the series, you're going to have to read Ender in Exile. That puts to rest a lot of the cliffhangers at the end of Shadow of the Giant. Even with the brilliant ending of Exile, Bean still has a crappy ending. But if you like it, that's your choice. I'm sure there are many that don't like Ender's ending, but for the most part I'm pretty happy with it. Be sure to let me know what you think when you're done with Shadow of the Giant though. :-D

seeing how there is techinically a new species and a story that could be written. but. i'm on the very verge of finishing the gaint.

Who'd win that one you think?
kometman 3 years ago
Haha, Ender of course!
thesnake52000 3 years ago
Let the bodies hit the floor!
But that would seriously make a good movie. In the sequel, ender is trying to live a life in peace but as he enters a new planet he finds out there are PREDATORS and TERMINATOR ROBOTS there.
kometman 3 years ago
couldn't he come up with something else? he basically killed ender by prolonging the series. only the first 3 books are worth reading.
redrising9815 3 years ago
Children of the Mind is not worth reading?!
thesnake52000 3 years ago
I stand by my statement. Only the first 3 are worth reading. Everything else regarding the Chinese planet and the Japanese planet, the virus alien, the whole trying to kill his AI friend are crap.
I also didn't like his Bean spin off. Trying to make his brother into a saint is unbelievable.
redrising9815 3 years ago
They're all worth reading, and peter was never a truly evil person.. he was a child, get over it. Once again.. they're all worth reading, don't listen to this moron, the bean books are some of his best work.
FFXIHit 3 years ago
you're just a fucking idiot who don't know anything.
From a literary standpoint, the later books are crap.
redrising9815 3 years ago

Speaker for the Dead is totally my favorite, but I kinda fell in love with the whole Outside idea. I mean, how cool is that?!
