Chiang Kai-shek Nationalist Party is nothing but cruel Chinese Nazis in German style military uniform. U.S.A. made them a cover and devised war against Japan.
The Tigers flew the P-40 which had eight machine guns. It was also heavily armored. The Jap Zero was lightly armored and had less firepower with less reach.
While the Zero was a much more agile plane the tactics used by the Flying Tigers were adapted to overcome the Zero's advantages.
Until they were inducted into the US Army in 1941 they had shot down almost five hundred Japanese planes compared to less than 100 of theirs destroyed and most of those were on the ground.
A lot of misconceptions here. The US did not fight the Japanese prior to Pearl Harbor. Claire Chennault trained Chinese pilots until around June 1940 and then received American volunteers who had resigned from active service. This was called the AVG (American Volunteer Group). They did receive support from America as all of Nationalist China did through a lend lease program similar to what the US did for England and Russia prior to its entry into the WWII.
@yuzikatou Maybe not in a dogfight, but using the tactics of the Flying Tigers, the records speak for themselves, time after time, the P-40s and AVG won.

Listen up all of Japanese people. Remember Flying Tigers.
When they attacked Japanese air force, United States was a neutral nation. According to the international law, it was illegal that a neutral nation support one country fighting some other coutry.
Not only supporting Chinese nationalist party ,but United States also attacked Japanese air force.
Who was responsible for outbreaking of the "Great East Asian War"?(We call pacific war Great East Asian War.)
If you do your history you would know that the Fling Tigers were not absorbed by the USAAF until after war had been declared. They started out as a mercenary group founded by a railcar companty who accepted a contract from china to defend their terrirory from the japanese onslaught. And lets not forget the fact that the Japanese had been at work trying to conquer all of Asia for over a decade before the war even started!!! Greater East Asia Co-Prospierity Sphere ring a bell??
@RSprtn117 Officially, the members of the AVG worked for CAMCO, an a/c building company. Chennault had been in China since 1937 and realized that with the inferior equipment and training that the Chinese Air Force had, they would never beat Japan. He knew that he needed American pilots and better equipment and with the help of Laughlin Currie, President Roosevelt and others, they finally scraped up enough equipment to do just that.
Thing is, USA doesn't share the same animosity towards Japan or China.
As an American, I like Japan today and Japanese people seem very kind to me. What is in the history is just that, but it shouldn't be forgotten. 70 years ago they were our enemies but today our good friends.
I know many Asian people still hate Japs but let's be honest it was practically a whole different country the Imperial Japan of WW2. Same with Germany, now we're all friends! But an apology from them would go a longway
The Zero WAS a good fighter...until the Hellcat arrived on the scene. Then it was all over. The Grumman F6 Hellcat was responsible for shooting down 80% of all Japanese aircraft during WW II. Truly the unsung hero of the Pacific, just like the Hawker Hurricane during the Battle of Britain.
Weren't they a merc unit consisting mainly of people who abandoned their duties and went to fight for money? At least that's the impression I get from the historical footage on that unit. Correct me if I am mistaken.
Before Pearl Harbour (1941), China sought help from USA. Roosvelt answered by sending pilots without breaking the non-combat relationship with Japan. China's pilots all perished after the war broke out in 1937. Flying Tiger pilots were USAF pilots who volunteered to fight in China. They had to quit from USAF before going to fly Chinese planes. China bought these P42 planes and paid these pilots for every Jap plane down. China and USA were allies until the former became a Communist country.
I think the brainwash of fomer USSR is much more serious than current red China. but they collapsed 18 years ago. China has already abandoned communist ideology and adopting capitalist market economy. so the convertion will not be long. by the way, I am from mainland China, but I can think independently.
@zlodiejus they were all US military pilots.. but had to act like they were civilian as they prepared to fight, the us entered war Dec 41 before they were in effect flying for the gov't of China on a paid bounty for each plane shot down
The Chinese words on the banner indicate that the first group were the Russian military representatives (:50-53). The second group (:54-55) were the Dutch forces. The Dutch forces were allies of the Chinese until the whole Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) fell to the Japanese.
The Flying Tigers led by General Claire L Chennault is the popular name of the 1st American Volunteer Group for the Chinese Air Force in fighting the Japs invision in the early 40s.
These well-trained and bravery aviators from US and China had successfully defeated the JAPS aggressors and led to its eventually unconditional surrender in 1945. The Flying Tigers then earned its world-wide recognition, achievements, and honors to be remembered forever since.
The Tuskegee pilots didn't lose ONE SINGLE BOMBER that they protected.. They even got 1 ace, but he was never officially recognised, because of the colour of his skin.. sad, but true.. :( This was great footage of the Flying Tigers, though.. :)
The last I know the Tuscegee flew the P51.. but then again I haven't studied the topic yoo closely.. I have however sen a GENUINE ex-Tuscegee Mustang at the Boxted Fly-In in 2004, albeit now flying in other colours.. :)

Hehe, if you do more p-40's I will feel compelled to make that mustang and Yak-1b (I have no idea which will be complete first). Is the Humber a 'scout car'?
Yep.. a 'scout' in your 'beloved' 1/76 scale!! :D Never started the P40, but maybe tonight.. I really need to finish a few more ongoing stuff though, before starting anything new!! The Humber is just a quick fix for something to bring to the Colchester club come Monday.. :D
Don't feel you have to start more projects, I myself am just returning to the La-7 I started way back in February I think. I have all the basic painting done, all that is needed is undercarriage, decals and tricky 'metal rings' around engine. Hope to finish it tomorrow.
18seki...Victors do write history, but one thing eventually gets into the books whomever the victor is... extreme and unnecessary brutality. The Romans were victors at Carthage and wrote the history, but their astonishing cruelty there is well known. Japan's WWII brutality is well researched. The lies and excuses of Japan's apologists only re-open the wounds.
No 18seki, you've missed the point. The AVG was a volunteer *defensive* force. Would the AVG have reason to fire a single shot (or even exist) if Japan had ceased attacking China? War, and a declaration thereof, always implies a commitment to action beyond defense. And yes, Japan would have fared better by getting out of China with tail firmly between its legs.
18seki.... The AVG were volunteers for China's military effort to deter Japanese agression in China. There was no declaration of war on Japan by America prior to Pearl Harbor. And, the only "myths" on the subject are found in modern Japanese school books.
Wandawong, you are proving my point which is that Americans did not declare war on Japan despite the fact that American pilots/planes were already fighting against Japan. So why does Japan have to declare war on the U.S. to send Japanese planes against American targets at Pearl Harbor? There appears to be a double-standards here which proves that victors write the history.
Japan didn't attack Pearl Harbor because of a few P-40s protecting China. Open your eyes and some history books. Don't skip the part about the rape of Nanking. Then you'll know why the Americans volunteered.
Bomberguy, the mere fact that the U.S. allied with the evil Soviets shows human rights was not at the forefront of American policy objectives. The news media was controlled by the U.S. Government to depict Japan as the bad guy and the Chinese as the victim. However the truth is that Americans and Europeans wanted to carve out China for themselves.
A little oversimplification there Seki. It's true that Japan came late to the Imperialist party to carve out a bigger piece of the world for themselves. They were isolated too long. By the time Japan woke up it was too late. Still, if Japan had not been so brutal it might have been different. Attacking the US was a dumb move, they should have been satisified with China.
Bomberguy, you need to study history in more detail. U.S. and its allies had ceased selling oil to Japan. That left Japan with 2 options: i) to get out of China with tail between the legs; or ii) to take military actions to secure its own oil supply.
@Bomberguy, that is what happened. The US narrative is that the Japanese started the war, but from the Japanese perspective the oil embargo was already an act of war.
I'm not saying it was right for the Japanese to invade China, but you're looking at history through a very filtered lens.
To call them the "bad guys" is too soft.Murders, rapists and facists is more like it. They called themselves warriors but treated their prisoners as animals.
Gentlemen, Flying Tigers were Americans who were fighting well before the Pearl Harbor against the Japanese. This disproves the myth that the Pearl Harbor attack was an unprovoked attack. Americans, please open your eyes!
Actually, you are wrong they had their first combat AFTER the PH (though they were dispatched earlier). They also mostly fought over Burma and probably never encountered the Zero fighters.
