@Martian74 So far the thickest ice on water we have been on wasn't enough to support the vehicle. It just broke its way through it. We belive that with studded tracks, and possibly without, we can climb back onto ice thick enough to support the vehicle. With the trim flap retracted, sudden application of power, in water puts the nose way up. We have used this technique to climb vertical banks up to 10 inches high.
We had it out on Chesapeake Bay last month, just west of the bridge/tunnel. I was pleased with the way it handled the waves that were there. We would need a lot more experience on different waves before taking on a channel crossing.
See our other videos, (search "fasttrackdriver"), and you will see that water is not a problem either. It has spent more time operating on water than on land.
U should build an amphibious car, I know this is amphibious but its not a car, Richard Branson has set the world record for fastest crossing of the english channel in an amphibious car. wouldn't you love to wipe the bearded smile of his smug little face?
There are records in several categories for amphibians in that English channel crossing. Making an attempt is an expensive proposition. If we could afford to do it we would set the record for fastest tracked amphibian and we could probably set the the overall record too.
This thing is cool. What type of 2 cycle engine is it? Does it use a transmission before the steering transmission? what type of steering box do you use. Double diff, tripple diff, hydaraulic???? I love it
This is (as of 1/1/2009) the world's fastest tracked amphibious vehicle on water, 39 mph. It may also be the fastest twin tracked vehicle on land at 65 mph. It can plane like a boat from a standing start in water.
If it crashes through the ice (frozen water) can it pull itself out of the water and back onto the ice or is it stuck?

Not so sure about the record across the channel where you would have to deal with high waves, too.
It seems to require a fairly flat surface (but at least it doesn't care what the surface is made out of: snow, water, ice, (I guess sand) etc :-)

Look at our video "High Speed Tracked Amphibian" here on YouTube. There is a clip of it pulling up two water skiers from a standing start in water.
