@OskyATL most USB mics draw power from the USB port. The GoPro (to my knowledge) wont operate a USB mic. Now, If you had internal power( batteries) and then a configuration of 3.5mm to USB adapters, it may work. No guarantees.
@CyclingWorks This iw where you want to take a look at the cable you will most likely use. I bored the hole just a tiny bit bigger then the cable. this allows there not to be any play in the cable and the stress of the cable is placed on the case, not the actual internals. Look at if you will most likely use a Right angle or straight Plug. I bored just slightly larger then the 1/4". after i drilled the 1/4" i used a Dremel to smooth it out to just the right fit.
@anotherLPfan Depending on your microphone barrel length, sometimes it can creep into frame. After playing with the positioning of the microphone and camera, I got a clear frame. I havent tried any of the other FOV's and resolutions simply because I set it up initially and havent had any issues with it. The mic i used was a short 3inch mic. Let me know what you come up with.
@Fleuristic this rig actually makes it more practical for other applications then just sports photography. This bracket and microphone make it possible to push the linits of the GoPro.
This is the setup I have had in my head but didnt know if it would work and you have just validated that for me. I just picked up a GoPro Hero 2 to record our R/C truck racing. Drifting, and bashing and this is the perfect setup for that. Would you happen to have the model number to the mic? Im looking for a decent mike but only seem to come across the RODE and Sennheiser andd their both out of the budget I want to spend. Thanks for the help.
@evanshowler I'd love to hear some testing footage from the shotgun mic. I don't want to spend a lot on a microphone but I do want to get moderately good inexpensive audio and I'm thinking that might be the way to go.. Maybe not the Radio Shack special, but a ~$30 or less mic.
@EranAmir Not that I know of. All of the Go Pro mounts are designed for the case specifically. There are no GoPro's made with a 1/4" screw or thread. This is why they released the tripod mount to attach to the cases.
@Aartwood Im glad I could help you in your decision! The other two videos of "Moses the Band" I have posted were shot using only GoPro's and using an external mic and syncing the audio. The GoPros can do alot more then just sports =]
awesome man, good to see. i want this model camera, but i am concerned about the mounting issue as i want a mic input that is a " L " shape connector.

In the 720p/60fps mode on the hero 2, does it film in 170 degree FOV?

Do you know if there is anyway to connect a usb microphone to the hero 2?

What is the size of the hole that you drilled for the microphone? Should I drill a hole just slightly bigger than the jack? Thanks!

quick question, with that setup and the camera being on 1080p widest FOV, does the camera show the mic protruding into view of the video?

Doesn't this defeat the point behind having a Hero2 in the first place? The rig you created makes the camera bigger than amateur handheld models.

@R8TEDM Here is a Sony mic you can try for $70. It has the hot shoe and 3.5mm plug. Here is the model Number: Sony ECMMSD1
The mic in the video was given to me, but it feels cheap. I'll put some test footage up soon.

Hey man thanks for the video! quick question: can you attach the hero2 to a tripod when it's not in the case?

@evanshowler impressive stuff indeed, never even considered using a gopro other than sports, or in my case, it would be paintballing.

@AridersLife The microphone I used has a right angle plug into the camera. I made sure my straight plugd fit too depending on the application.
