  • I had one of these for Ten Years ... the ring is a bad preamp tube .. the other rule with these guys is to toss the Power tubes every six months .... I changed mine regularly

JJ el 84's are the best current production el84's on the market

  • Hi where did you get the flight case? I need one for my ac15c1

  • Hey I had a Lose Jack and a brocken Cap on my control board on mine and it would start to ring and like a feedback It was around 40 bucks to have my local tech in Omaha NE fix it. That was after chasing and replacing tubes ect....

  • Total case of monophonic tube/tubes, based on what I heard. feed back hum because of monophonic tube..also would be a good idea to clean or replace the tube sockets, which could be one of the reasons for this type of tube failure.

  • Sounds like one of the tubes in the amp is microphonic....which is picking up noises in the amp.

  • This sounds just like a microphonic Tube. I had this problem with my krank chadwick. There was a tube in the preamp that was microphonic causing the problem.

  • Nice clear example of a microphonic valve. So often people talk about microphonics but you don't really know what it is until you've heard it once, then you won't forget.

PS The early AC30 reissues had several problems that later ones had a poor stab at addressing. Most of them relate to the addition of a standby switch which wasn't on the original and isn't necessary; try not to use it, it strains the valve rectifier with surges and shortens its life.

  • BAD TUBE! Replace it,and the problem will go away!

  • Change your volume potentiometer ... And try some new capacitors ... And i think that will be all.

  • Does anybody know why could a hum go and come when I do nothing? I really don't change, connect or disconnect things with the amp, but somedays it hums too loud, while others it hums practically nothing. I connect and disconnect other things (to other outlets, in case it affects in some way) like my piano or my xbox, but it doesn't seem to affect...

  • i have the same problem at the moment..... first i thought it was a tube issue and i replaced the original tube with JJ's. After retubing..... the sound while playing through the amp was awesome but when idle that hum was still there:(.......Did you ever solve the problem?

  • Yep...what you have is a microphonic tube....most likely the EF86. Just tap on the tube itself while the amp is running to make sure. Try swapping it out or add some antivibration rings or an isolated mount.

  • I have been playing for almost 20 years and I've never had an amp that doesn't buzz when you turn everything all the way up. Especially a 30 watt tube amp with 2 12 inch speakers. Seriously? How about you do a video like this for us with some guitar mixed in with that amp sound. I'm sure that would render the noise more negligible.

  • You may have fixed this by now... i hope any way haha. but im guessing old microphonic tubes

  • Guaranteed its a microphonic ef86. 99.999% sure of it. Replace it and thank me later.

  • If the amp has an EF86 preamp tube those types are known to be very microphonic. Replace that tube with a vintage nos (new old stock) EF86, valvo brand preferably. I'm pretty sure thats your problem brotha. When you tap on the amp chassis you hear it ring, thats a sure sign of a microphonic tube and its most likely the EF86 (its the nature of the beast). Vintage tubes are pretty expensive but they're less microphonic, well worth the price in tone, and last MUCH longer.

  • I get that sometimes on my line6 amps. It usually happens when there is a large metallic item near enough to be picked up. Also if you have anything magnetic around it could interfere with the speaker. It could be your tubes too. But check your speaker and the tubes. Or try it in different places.

  • hey um i was just wondering i have a randall amp and i was wondering if its my squire or amp um i put the pickup selector down and i get a buzz and then wen i move it in between pickups its fine im pretty sure the pickups are just shitty but im not sure do u have any ideas?

  • I think a lot of people have that problem. Could be a bad ground wire...more likely its just the wiring in your house. I think my strat does the same thing. If you ever play at a shite venue, you will notice it does it there too. :) Try moving around in your room, or using different outlets. Move away from fluorescent lights and computer monitors.

  • @Lukeyourself All stratocasters do this buzz due to the single coil pickups.

  • You are moving your pickups in and out of phase. The "between" settings are much quieter because they are in phase.

    (I think that's right, haha)

  • the pickups arent humbuckers on a squier so when u put it in in between settings the two pickups cancel the buzz. its just how most guitars are with single coil pickups

  • @blurpy123 single coil pickups are noisy by nature and susceptible to lots of interferences as well. If you have a humbucker pickup in your guitar (if your squier has a HSS config, for example), if you select the humbucker only there won't be (or shouldn't be) any noise, if there is, it's due to bad shielding. Also if there isn't any actual guitar sound when you are putting the selector in between positions it's because nothing is actually selected, so there shouldn't be noise obviously.

  • @blurpy123 The soldering has soe issues, but it isn't that much of a problem

  • i have a vox ad30 xl

and his has lots of background buss, when ym guitars plugeed in and stuff, and when i play it sounds really messy because of it.

  • the bad tube was microphonic and started to pick up mechanical vibrations and convert them in to sound

  • dude, thats just a bad preamp tube. just tap the preamp tubes individually with a pencil, and you'll that one of them produces the ring. had that problem many times, although the ring on your amp is a little lower than usual...

  • Thanks for the tip man! Say, I read on a Brian May web page that he actually pulls 4 of 6 preamp tubes out of his AC30 to make it run cleaner. If I have a bad tube, and just pull that one out (assuming its not from the channel I use) I should be safe right? Or do I need to cap the socket where the tube has been pulled?

  • Awesome! It would appear that DID fix my problem! It was one of the preamp tubes for my normal channel, which I use. So I just grabbed the tube from the Brilliant channel (which I dont use) and plugged it in in its place. Left the baddy out. Works like a charm! Maybe I'll make a video of myself doing it! I love youtube. All praise be to her. And thanks Lukecyrus!

  • @Lukeyourself You should never pull tubes on a cathode biased amp.

  • I have a vox valvetronix 100. I have only had this amp for a few months. This amp has several amp settings and on the AC30 I am getting a low humming noise. I have had the amp to cut out on me a few times playing at low volume. I have check all connections and my guitar. Does this sound like a preamp tube also. For what i understand there is only one preamp tube in this amp. Thanks
