This is not technically true, 1 cent coins are only considered legal tender in a group of less than 100 for a given settlement of debt. The only exception clause being in the case where the debt is irreversibly incurred (for example food has already been eaten) in which case the vendor is required to accept any large note or large amount of coins.

The jewelry store in fact does not have to accept the pennies. They have a right to refuse a sale.
The penny trick only works if you are previously in debt to somebody, as in after eating at a restaurant or paying a parking ticket.

theres some machines that u can put in all your change into and it gives you a receipt with the amount you put in.. then take the receipt to the cashier at whatever store you're at and they will give you your cash

I'm not sure about the US, but in England by law they don't have to. Anything over 20p in pennies they can legally refuse! Not many people actually know that but it's on the royal mint website.
