without a doubt one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world, makes me proud to be a capetonian. i think this rivals the bernabau, the nou camp and far out-rivals the emitates.
Problem is Newlands is not a modern venue with the required infrastructure for a major event. Its tucked into a residential area with poor transport access and no real future in terms of hosting events other than rugby.
To be clear. Zille was against building the stadium without a financial study and site feasibility study. Zille ensured both studies took place, which resulted in the go ahead .Zille was correct in stating that the contingency of 5% was too low. The studies showed that the cost would be much higher than the idealistic estimates provided. The project is well run, managed and designed by some of the best in the world.
The stadium has its own generators. In addition, the city has also installed a substation at the stadium which will provide the CBD with its energy needs until 2025.
Hmmmm.... if the city has that, then Zille must be doing something right. (no wonder she got best mayor in the world prize).. omg! can you imagine her a president, if anyone can fix the mess the ANC made of the country after Mandela finished with corruption and crime its that woman...VIVA VILLE FOR PRESIDENT!!!
im not a fan of the anc..but dude get ur facts straight. Zille was against the stadium initially..thats part of the reason why the construction phase began 3months l8r than it was supposed 2 and the project is over budget.
A Architect or Engineer must be consulting her or she hold a degree in one of those field.. it's the smarts method to protect people from any down time. kudos.. beautiful video and super structure.. Can not wait to see the WORLD CUP in Africa (South Africa ..best ) from New York
absolutley nothing close to this in Australia not even by a long shot we need to do some catching up with South Africa i will be the first to admit that
How's the construction going? I was in lovely Cape Town in late 2006 and there was still controversy around the venue, but then I saw some pictures of Helen Zille kick-starting the works. Is the progress noticeable? Also, as of 2006 the upgrading works hadn't started neither in Bloem nor at Ellis Park, how are those two doing? I for one remain positive it will be a success and a boost for the country just like the 1992 Olympics and other events were for us. Greetings from a SA-loving Spaniard.
Construction is going ahead pretty well at the moment. There's around 15 cranes on site. Everything is on schedule. They're working on the third tier of Greenpoint at the moment. The roof will arrive in July and start being assembled in August.
The other two stadiums have started their upgrade as well too. From what I know, no stadiums are behind schedule...some are ahead in fact.
8 stadia on track to be completed more than 1 year before the event. Durban and Cape Town will complete their stadia by October 2009, the FIFA inspection date
i think the power shortage discussion is short sighted. yes we're struggling with power resources now, but it wasn't a surprise for eskom. they've been working on upgrading and building new facilities for a while. we just didn't know about it. so that little topic can rest. awesome stadiums, all of them. really cool vid too. can't wait.
can we keep the comments on topic in relation to the stadium and the design itself.
some of us dont see the 97% of spending on infrastructure(especially transport related) in relation to the 3% on spending on stadia pre 2010 as a waste.
Yes, simply functional. Now I wonder if the government will follw suit? Really, socially speaking, all this 2010 money is somewhat of a waste. I sure hope it generates income and is not a disastrous waste of resources. (The electricity comment is very, very real).

THUMBS UP IF GREENPOINT STADIUM IS THE BEST STADIUM OF THE FIFA WORLD CUP SOUTH AFRICA!!!
20Mako 1 year ago
I hear they want to demolish it, can't afford to run it now that the world cup is over. Pity, beautiful stadium.
praatafrikaanz 1 year ago
@praatafrikaanz I THINK IT WONT BE DEMOLISHED!
1. IT IS A BRAND NEW STADIUM.
2. THE STADIUM WAS DESIGNED FOR RUGBY AND SOCCER GAMES.
3. IF THEY WANT TO DEMOLISH IT, I WANT THAT THE OTHER STADIUMS BE DEMOLISHED TOO.
4. GREENPOINT STADIUM IS THE BEST F****NG STADIUM EVER!!
