1 - Write as if you're trying to convince someone.
2 - Ask questions that the reader would probably ask and answer them.
3 - Expose the hypocrisy of the the state.
4 - Expose the philosophical illegitimacy of the state.
5 - Expose nationalism and patriotism.
Remember that what seems natural to you is other worldly to most. I also would stay away from economics. I find philosophical arguments to be far more convincing.
Thats a good bullet list man. I know I do have to focus a lot of the historical points since this is a dumb world civ class but those are good points to touch on. I know I have to define the state and tell why it is illegitimate and of course the violent enforcement. And yea, no economics in this from what I can see, since my professor is a novice on this the philosophy should be more convincing then anything else.
the internet as an analogy for a free society (it's close enough) works great. it regulates itself. any problems that come up (viruses, spamming, etc.) is regulated by private businesses via firewalls and such. and people are familiar w/ and love the internet. i was going to do anarchy for my film as argument eng. comp. class last semester and it had to be 10-15 minutes and it was just impossible to argue anarchy convincingly in that time... so i went w/ legalizing prostitution.
If your new prof is a bible believer you could throw in ancient Israel between the conquest and the monarchy. I'd have to do a little googling to dig a up a good link or two for information.
Hi! Just sent you a video~~interview of Dr. Mercola and Barbara Loe Fisher regarding last week-end declaration of Nat'l Emergency and swine flu vax. (It's on "mercola" channel, 5 parts)
If the gov't being FUBAR is a good case in point for you, well, here you have it.
why did your professor get fired? Teach about the lack of evidence for the nazi gas chambers or something?
You might be able to touch on viking age scandanavia. All free men were required to own weapons. They had whats called an althing in some parts, but it was nothing like the government we have now.
Near the last paragraph you can talk about how the Soviet Union was not a communist regime and how Cuba and the rest of 'em are actually totalitarian...
It may have little to do w/ it but I guess that you can put it in there when a hypothetical question pops up.
An Ancient Stateless Civilization: Bronze Age India and the State in History
Name of an article examine the Harrapans, thought to be stateless or nearly so. This is like 2500 BCE so it may be a bit too early though.
I think the law mechant, the trade fairs, and the devolposment of common law cannot be stressed enough when examining the hows of stateless societies.
Wow, thanks for this! I'll be sure to give it a read, probably Thursday on my day off. It would be excellent to link that functioning society with the rise of states through religion as well.
assert yourself then back up your assertion. At least five assertions and then have them all coincide with your thesis. Also, talk about the mild mild west (also known as wild wild west).
There's a paper called "Trade without Law: Private-Order Institutions in Mexican California" about how trade prospered in California around 1830-1840, but I can't seem to find a free version of that.
There recently was a column by Michael Shermer in Scientific American about how laws are a spontaneous phenomenon, and he brought up Peter Leesons work on Pirate societies as an example.
Peter's book is called "The Invisible Hook" you may find a PDF summary of that if you google.
I would suggest that you have a look at Graeber's Fragments of an Anarchistic Anthropology - the examples are mostly traditional societies - so they can squeeze into the before 1500 barrier by arguing traditional.
There is the interesting question of analysis of a society before 1500 depends on records which would be written by people with no sympathy, no understanding of anarchy so you are a little limited.
i always though Africa was a prime example especially the east coast Somalia an Ethiopia, the though was that osama bin laden came from an is still in the sudan,an piracy still is rampant.
You could also talk about the Xeer, North Africa's ancient customary law system. It's been around for thousands of years, and it's pretty much the only thing that's kept Somalia from degenerating into a smoking crater.
Ok... Why anarchy fails. A state will always overwhelm individual defenses. The amount of freedom you can have is what you can get by defending yourself. The state will evolve from mutual aid or capitalism. A couple people together will eventually pick on a single person.
The state will not go away until enough people are willing to die to defend a complete stranger.
If I am going to die to defend a stranger, I will use violence, fuck the philosophy.
No, states rely on ideology. You can use all the violence you want but you need people to believe in the state to point the guns for you. If enough people don't want a state, you won't get one. And believe me; after living in a free society, who the hell would want to let in the extortion racket again?
Watch confederalsocialist's videos for more information.
a couple of problems - it is 500 pages, it is not about the topic and it is not before 1500 - I am reading them at the moment but not something to do in a week for a five side essay.
There's a great mises article on the Xeer law of Somalia, but I'm not sure you want to use that example. :P Rothbard also wrote an article called Pennsylvania's Anarchist Experiment it is up on Lew Rockwell and the Mises Institute.
Why not Xeer? It is mostly prevalent in the northern inland, the most stable region of Somalia. No pirates and less fighting, I think it's a great thing to bring up.
Wow, that's bullshit how they jerked you around on that paper. I would actually complain about something like that. Seriously, they told you that you didn't have to do it, then said you do and moved up the due date by a month? I think that would cause an angry mob at my school (then again, we're all a bit high-strung anyway this time of year).
look through the LR archive, I'd think there may be an idea or two in there.

One note. You should cut your thesis down to: A state is not necessary in order to have a prosperous, orderly and free society.
Personally, that's wat I'd do, if I was writing your paper.
