  • 47441 views! Congratulations Frank. The video that got me started. (IFR rating and flight videos)

  • Great video! Thanks for posting!

  • You are flying arguably the finest single ever made that unfortunately today's young pilot will never have the opportunity to experience much less see in person.

  • is your plane powered by a black and decker??

  • Great video!!! Great departure. Love the moustache 2!!

  • @ 3:55 Radar Conac hahaha

  • why do u keep the camera on yourself? It would be much better to see the instruments. Just sayin

  • Maybe you should roll down the window and holler !!

    LOL

  • what airport is this>?

  • @ogreny Corona KAJO

  • How'd you get your clearance? Cell phone, RCO? They give you a void time? The clearance included contacting Chino Ground for release rather then launch VFR and then over to SoCal?

  • Fholbert, I want to be you.

  • your full pro at that lol 5*

  • how do you get the atc to pick up on the camera?

  • Look at my website, on the video page. There is a How To link. I can't post a URL here.

  • how do you get the atc to pick up on the camera?

  • how do you get the atc to pick up on the camera?

  • may i ask for the quality of your headphone, you have the bose, would you tell me how you feel with them?, i have bought Zulu, i was in doubt about buying that one or other zulu, thank you, greit comandant !

  • Is this with the lady from tradewinds that was in Steven Forces podcast?

  • I'm not an expert flyer but that looked like a great take off. You seemed very relaxed and extremely competent. Great vid thanks for posting.

  • Great video! I like the IFR videos. Keep em' coming!

  • impressive climb, what kind of a bird is that?

  • It's a Bellanca Super Viking. Look at my Web Site. URL at the end of the video.

  • Thanks for posting these I always believed and still do that socal airspace is the most difficult to naviagate in the western US.

  • I gotta ask. Why not?

  • do not need them.

    its a fad..........ok

  • Its not a fad it cuts the glare from the clouds and makes it easier to see and avoid collision hazards especially transitioning between imc and vmc. You must have never flown an airplane before?

  • Uh - you're a douche and obviously don't fly. Seriously - sunglasses are usually needed in daylight.

  • Cloudy conditions are sometimes worse for glare than clear conditions. I was right seat in a kingair c90 busting thru a deck of clouds and it was worse in the clouds than when we were clear on top.

  • Orbits2 you're a dumbass.

  • so are you .

Do we have a problem with that little shit?

  • Look, neither of us are going to intimidate each other on the comment section of a youtube video, so you're "do we have a problem with that little shit?" is really ineffective. But you're obviously stupid for commenting on an aviation video as if you know something, when in reality you know nothing.

  • yes we are little crap

  • Oh you're right, please stop calling me a "little crap" and a "little shit", you're scaring me. I mean I don't who the hell you are and you don't know who I am but I'm scared shitless because you act like a tough guy on youtube comments.

  • Five Stars!!!!

  • The departure procedure take us into Chino's class D. If the tower is open there is no way around it.

  • I love to watch flying videos and all types of planes but I'm too unhealthy and old to fly, so obviously don't speak the language. Could somebody define MVA, ATC, Class C, 135, 121, o2, Sqawk request, on Top, and maybe advise a good place to learn casually just enough to know what the heck the technical speak is for laymen bound to the ground. Thanks in advance

  • Go to your local airport or invest in the Jeppesen Private Pilot and/or Instrument/Commercial text books.

  • Thanks

  • also offered in the spirit of Friendship and Respect. to LJDRVR below: not true. many popular instructors(the Kings,Sportys,Rod Machado, etc..) dispute the popular "lore" about simply punching the IDENT button as your reply to ATC.this is NOT acceptable. the data block can sometimes take several seconds to "light up" on ATC's screen, and in the meantime, he's thinking you "didn't hear his Squawk Request" and may waste valuable time having to repeat it.just give a quick, 2 second Verbal confirm

  • Great video!

  • Here's some constructive criticism, offered in the spirit of friendship and with respect.

When a controller asks you to ident, your ID block flashing on his or her screen should be the reply - not tying up valuable frequency space with a response. Also, if you're going to utilize your single-engine aircraft in IMC, why the big rush to cancel? Having a controller on your frequency, with you tagged up on radar is a valuable resource for traffic avoidance or in the event of an emergency. Take care

  • I cancel for a couple of reasons.

1.) I want to proceed on course and since I cross the arrival route of an international airport twice being IFR would double the distance of this 22 minute flight.

2.) I don't have o2 on board and the MVA plus direction of flight is 15,000'. The airport I'm departing is 500'. The flight is about 40 miles.

3.) I only canceled IFR not flight following. I stayed with ATC though the Class C and beyond.

  • Fair enough. I don't think we're going to reconcile our two cultures. I wouldn't fly IMC in a single engine airplane (And I used to.) unless I was escaping a natural disaster or some such reason.

That's one of the great things about flying - Your freedom to accept as much risk as you deem acceptable. Watching the way you handle yourself, I've no doubt you consider every angle. If you ever get down to Houston, drop me a line.

    We'll go fly the Cub.

  • I know from when I was an Air Traffic Controller when one is told to ident every one stays off frequency expecting an acknowledgment. It was quicker for the pilot to acknowledge an ident so the next guy can talk.

  • I fly in the system 75 to 90 hours a month and it's de rigeur to simply respond with the ident. I've been doing it for twenty years and never had the controller repeat himself or ask ackward pauses on freq. Really doesn't matter one way or another - think of it as workload reduction for you in the single-pilot environment. BTW, enjoy the Super Viking, as you know they're a great airplane.

  • You have been doing it for 20 years, but your only 28??

  • LJDRVR, I disagree with you on this matter. Having flown corporate, 135, and 121 everyone developes their own techniques in radio procedure. As long as it is consistent with the AIM, feel free to reply to ATC instructions as it pleases you. You sound like a new flight instructor in the way that some of these guys get hung up on petty details and not the important stuff. This guy did a great job. I fly for a major airline and I always confirm an IDENT instruction.

  • wasn't as if the frequency was busy!

  • This is one of my most favorite videos on youtube. Thanks for posting and I look forward to more....

  • Very cool. Any chance you'll take me for a ride?

  • very good communication to the twr

  • nice video

  • Awesome, you're radio work is impressive too.

  • Great video!

Just wondering what kind of aircraft it is? Seems to go very quick for a light aircraft.

  • It's a Bellanca Super Viking.

  • Very cool! Thanks for sharing

  • hahhaa nice

  • Nice job. I've been boring holes in the sky over L.A. for 25 years as a VFR pilot, I think next year I'll tackle the instrument rating. Nice video, it's good to hear the communications.

  • Great vid! and good job...! Thanks for posting

  • they probably put a headphone on the camara so they can listen wat tower says

  • bravo!!! very very very instructional and profesional

are you an airline pilot ????

  • No, just an IT guy. Thanks

  • How did you get the communications to run right into your camera? Thanks

  • Comment removed

  • go to my web site at 160knots*com

  • hey, just wondering what type of headset you use and how much it cost? thanks

  • Bose $995

  • is it like portable to use in like rental aircraft

  • ?????

  • the recording system you got . to record video and sound from Atc. Is it a portable unit to haul around into other aircraft/helicopter or is it installed in your aircraft. thanx

  • Yes, look on my 160knotsdotcom video page for how I do it.

  • Are you happy with the Bose? I've heard the mic can sometimes decrease in performance at higher altitude (lower pressure). You look like you do enough flying to give a valuable opinion of your headset?

  • No issues with the Bose up to 17,500.

  • i got a bose X, and it is so much better than my david clark. i forgot my bose at home and used my clark which was in my car, and i was irritated afterwards with it.

  • Ive been wanting to video a couple of my flights in the ERJ. I was wondering what you did to allow the communication from your headset to be recorded? In other words what kind of adapter or device did you have to get? I am clueless when it comes to audio/video.

    Thank you in advance

  • Me too, look on my video page for a link about how I do this.

  • Great job. Real IFR videos like yours help guys working on their IFR tickets have a better idea what it looks like, and that it's worth all the effort. Keep'm coming.

  • Thanks, but this sure isn't my best work. I plan on replacing it when conditions permit.

  • I'm at Judy School's often.

  • Well, Frank... I've got to hand it to you. You're a very professional pilot and I admire that. Not only are you professional in your way of flying, but your radio procedures are, by far, the best I've ever heard! Thanks for the video, man. Hope to see you at L67 sometime soon!

    Sean Dickerson

  • Very hicg quality. Looks like luent flying. Nice moustache.

  • After canceling I can go direct. My clearance was only to VFR on Top and not the entire route.

  • Thanks fholbert for out great great great aviation videos!

And I admire your professional airmanship!

  • that "out" should be "your" - sorry

  • Thatnks a lot. I do that all the time when typing too.

  • What sort of aircraft are you flying.

  • Excellent productions. I enjoy every one of them. Let me add my sincere thanks, and please keep 'em coming.

  • Enjoyed getting to see the dash-to-pilot angle in this video, thanks!

  • Good video for a training group!

  • Thanks! I wasn't planing on using this until the item up in a newsgroup. This winter I hope to replace this with a better one.

  • Thank you for your wonderful videos :)

  • Thank you very much!
