Great job man. I respect you for taking the time to learn this line. This is probably one of my favorite jazz tunes ever and as a music student who is studying bass also I can say you did a great job with the phrasing. Your tone is nice too. Awesome.
Emilio - I've been playing a few years now and was just introduced to Scot LaFaro from my teacher. This is beautiful - I look forward to playing as beautifully in short time. Very lovely - thanks for the inspiration today. Liz
sounds pretty good man. If I were you I would greatly consider putting more weight in your right hand. Do you use that right hand technique all the time? or only when doing running lines?
@TakeHisKite No, it depends who I'm playing with, where I'm playing, and what kind of music. A gig in a club with a heavy-hitting drummer is a lot different than playing along to a CD.
@emilioguarino cool man. Intonation wasn't perfect, but let's be honest, playing along with a recording like that is impossible to be in tune every note. Keep it up!
Brilliant to bring these to life again. I´ve been a fan of his since 1961. Let me know if you ever record all the "Vanguard" sessions ....I´ll buy the DVD. Thanks.
@4ropebottom Thank you! I have a little more free time these days so I'm working on a project involving several transcriptions from the Vanguard recordings...
The biography is really, really important. Anyone who hasn't checked it out should pick up a copy.
You hear all these amazing lines that LaFaro does on the album. They sound so easily executed. But it's obviously very difficulty when watching you play. Really puts us bass players in place.
Beautiful video. I always wish I could go back in time and sit at the Vanguard watching these guys play.
Very nice! I've always found LaFaro's work on the "alternate" take to be the more adventurous(so to speak)-being able to listen to it and "see" it helps me to take it all in,confirming my initial feeling. Keep it going, bro!
@Kollophon Thomastik Spirocore Weich. They're steel strings, but with a low setup, they play very easily and sound great. Not very loud, but they record well and sound good through an amp.
Thanks for doing this, it is quite intriguing. Scott's playing began to haunt me in 1964 and it still does. His genius has not been equaled, to my knowledge.
@kocn53 ; I couldn't agree more. I thought the vanguard live was recored in 61. No other bass player quite like him. I thought Gomez was good, too but Scotty is just out of this world. Strongly recommend Bill and Scotty's 61 vanguard 'Gloria's Step take 3.'
Tell me about it man! I think the best way to keep his memory alive is to keep playing his music.
However, what I find a real shame is that Red Mitchell does not seem to be as popular as Scotty..and it was Red that helped Scotty pick out his bass, as well as brought it back to Kolstein's shop after the car crash. There are videos of Red playing on youtube, please give them a listen.
@emilioguarino his duo stuff is so ridiculous. Red really knew how to play the bottom, middle and, melody on his bass as well and belongs in that same family of extended range bass playing. I love his album Warne Marsh, great dialogue there as well. I hope that bass is in good hands these days, as it those lines of LaFaro ingrained into its wood.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is great and all, but stop playing the bass like a pussy. Get that right hand closer to the end of the fingerboard. Get a real sound, don't be a little bitch. Play on the meat and side of your fingers, not the tips. Are you retarded? Anyways, LaFaro was the man.
why dont you stop commenting shit like a little bitch, this fucking player is playing the bass with sophistication and not digging into it like a chocolate cake like some of these bothes doe. Who wants to hear some clangy over plucked shit, play it with feel, this aint bouncing with bud or giant steps this in waltz man. Are you fucking retarded thats the question, move to the side and let this man show you how bass is moving, its a feel instrument not a heavy metal drum kit.
yea. I memorized enough to get past the page turns and some of the harder licks. (you can see me stop to turn at 1:37) but I'd say I was reading 60% of it.
I've since bought a new bass and set up this one differently, so I couldn't tell you exactly what the string height was.
But, I generally favor higher tension strings with low string height. It depends on your bass, your hands, and what kind of sound/feel you like. Experiment.
Yeah I know I should experiment, but unfortunately I don't have an adjustable bridge and double bass strings are also a bit too expense to just go and buy a few different types to try 'em (not to mention extremely unpractical in changing them). But I've tried some other basses than mine, whitch had their strings set up quite a lot lower than mine has, and it radically increased my speed, so it kinda made me doubt. But on the other hand, it might destroy the tone, because...
... I will not be able to pluck the strings as physical as I'm used to do.
...choices, choices :P
Ah well, I'll probably do some upgrading on this bass in some time, and maybe I'll buy me an adjustable brigde then, so that I can actually try what suits me best. Thanks anyways!
Strings get expensive, and it takes a couple months to know if you like them or not, but that's a whole different discussion.
You should try to get an adjustable bridge. It took about 6 months after I got my bass, but I eventually found a height that agreed with my playing style and bass.
Thank you, man. One of my favorite performances ever was Evans's Village Vanguard recordings. You put in a lot of work, obviously. Things are good in the world when there are young guys like you transcribing, playing, and learning from Scotty LaFaro lines.
