No, the ad is not in any way mocking the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. That chant tone is a common dialog tone, used at Mass and the offices, but NOT the tone used for the consecration.
And anyway, the words of the consecration are "Hoc est enim Corpus meum." and "Hic est enim Calix Sánguinis mei, novi et ætérni testaménti; mystérium fidei: qui pro vobis et pro multis effundétur in remissiónem peccatórum."

If a large amount of people are offended by the ad then it is a good reason to pull the ad. It is not exactly a good marketing piece if it turns people off. They may boycott, tell freinds etc.

As a Roman Catholic attending the mass (luckily!), I loved this ad! It WAS completely amateur in its production, but I think that's part of its youtube charm. As a television ad, this is DC, who's had an up escalator out where I am for six months and keeps pushing back the completion date for its repair. I do not expect much more than this quality for an ad.

I can still vividly recall childhood memories of fearing eternal torture in Hell for being a human being. Losing count of the number of times I said the lord's prayer feeling I didn't get it right. Not realizing that there were cultures isolated from the world that had never heard of Christ, not realizing that the books of bible were written decades after Christ's death and could have been easily exaggerated. Christianity deserves no respect if it needs more than love to sustain itself, fear.

I grew up with similar fears of going to hell, or my relatives and loved one going to hell when I was a child Religion is responsible for some of the worst child abuse (I am talking mental, but yeah, molesters is a separate disgusting topic) as children grow up among images of tortured, bleeding statues. But, I can't support this ad, because it's not funny, and it makes mass transit look like a place where you get trapped next to a fat guy reading the paper who crowds your seat. Now /that's/ offensive.
It pretty much says nothing about the pope, religion, or Catholicism, though.

I believe any add that uses a bobblehead is a good add. This world would be a better place with more bobbleheads. I've never thought of a pope bobblehead but it's a good idea, perhaps a whole line of Pope and saint bobbleheads?...And we could get everybody involved as well with heros like Luther,Calvin,Knox,Fox,Wesley and Edwards,etc.Each with a booklet explaining their mission.
I'm not of the Roman Church but I wish him well on his journey and hope it is a good visit.

Apparently what people were offended by wasn't the pope bobblehead- it was that it wasn't dressed in the proper papal vestments, and some of the latin was wrong.

The cadence of the guy talking to the bobblehead was a pardoy of what priests say or sing during the transubstantiation, the holiest and most important part of the Mass.
If a similair ad had been made parodying the adhan, the Muslim call to prayer, I'm sure there would be outrage and death threats across the Muslim world. Since this involves Catholics, though, we just get accused of not having a sense of humor when we defend our faith.

No, the ad is not in any way mocking the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. That chant tone is a common dialog tone, used at Mass and the offices, but NOT the tone used for the consecration.
And anyway, the words of the consecration are "Hoc est enim Corpus meum." and "Hic est enim Calix Sánguinis mei, novi et ætérni testaménti; mystérium fidei: qui pro vobis et pro multis effundétur in remissiónem peccatórum."
The commercial does not even REMOTELY parody the Consecration.

So Catholics of the Archdiocese of Washington are offended because of a good faith effort made by those who are outside of the Church? Frankly, I think they need to be upset at the Catholic organizers of the Papal Mass, who have planned a great deal more that is contrary to the Catholic faith than a papal bobblehead!
Take a look at the music they've programmed. It's the very stuff that Pope Benedict abhors. I kinda think he's going to be more upset about that than a bobblehead.

Um, one of the hallmarks of being Eastern rite is your church's communion with the Pope. By remaining Eastern rite you ARE basically saying that you approve of the office of the papacy as it is currently defined. If you REALLY can't stand it, go join the Orthodox jurisdiction that is closest to your Eastern Rite one, but remember that your Eastern rite ancestors suffered greatly for their commitment to the Orthodox faith, the fullness of which is found in communion with the pope.

I am a Roman Catholic and was fortunate enough to get a ticket to the Papal Mass after failing to make the Papal Choir. I was not offended by the ad. I found it to be quite humerous and it gets an important message out. Take Metro. I haven't read all the comments but find some to be quite off the track. God gave us the gift of laughter and joy. Let's use them! I am sure Pope John Paul II would have loved it! Welcome to D.C. Pope Benedict. May you have a safe journey.

Taught 'em all about science. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to tell them that if they have sex without using a condom, there are great consequences. We tell them not to have sex, instead. We also tell them to eat right, drive the speed limit, stay away from drugs and alcohol, and do their homework.

We're talking about America, not Africa. That's another country with another set of problems. I would blame AIDS there on a lack of information, condoms, and the prevalence of prostitution. But in America, I'd toss the statistics right back your way. How many high school pregnancies are caused by a broken condom? And how many are caused by not using one at all?

Depends. Many women who have abortions were taking birth control and using condoms. There always breaking. it encourages promiscuous sex, etc. And like I said, most teeange pregnancies are in PUBLIC high schools, where they already teaches about condoms and BC. You can't blame your out of wedlock kids on other entitys when its your own fault.

OK, wrote this once and it didn't take. Let's try again. "Many" and "always" are pretty subjective words, please back them up with a reference so I know you're not just spouting an opinion. Studies show the failure rate of condoms between 2-15%, depending on whether they're properly used. What's the pregnancy rate for unprotected sex? How about STD rate? And when did this become about sex, anyway?

By the way, I want to address the "it encourages promiscuous sex" statement you've made. The American Journal of Public Health published a study from GWU on Massachusetts high schools. Comparing schools with & without condoms available, "they found 49 percent of students at non-condom schools reported having ever had sex, compared with 42 percent of those at schools with condoms available." The best way to keep your kid from getting pregnant is to educate them and be a good parent.

If a large amount of people are offended by the ad then it is a good reason to pull the ad. It is not exactly a good marketing piece if it turns people off. They may boycott, tell freinds etc.

And if Metro decides they want to pull and ad, then that would be up to them. But if you think you can go through life without ever being offended, well I wish you luck. MaHaRushie: Religious people CANNOT get along, because the core of their belief system works under the premise of "I am right, and you are wrong" (am going to heaven and you to hell, my god is the true yours is false, I am more righteous, you are a sinner, etc) . The human psychology resists to be told that, so there will always be friction, and yes, war between religions. Religion is a perfect place to justify people's inner prejudice and need to feel better than others by putting others down.

Pskini, I cannot speak for other faiths but that is not part of Catholic beliefs.
We are all imperfect humans and I have seen the 'holier than though' attitude in my Church. It happens no matter what you are talking about sports teams, social class, race, intellect etc...
As Catholics we accept other faiths as just a different perspective to seeing God.
We are all on the path to God. I just feel my path is the best. That is not to say others will not get there as well.

As a Roman Catholic attending the mass (luckily!), I loved this ad! It WAS completely amateur in its production, but I think that's part of its youtube charm. As a television ad, this is DC, who's had an up escalator out where I am for six months and keeps pushing back the completion date for its repair. I do not expect much more than this quality for an ad.

The pace of the video is plodding. Audio quality is lacking. Blocking is poor and camera angles are ponderous.
This would be an adequate amateur viral for YouTube, but for a Regional Transit Authority to produce this as a public ad spot is embarrassing.
As for the use of the bobble-head Pope; It's not as if Christians have any fatwas against the graven image of it's religious leaders.

IMO a good, lighthearted idea that might have been better executed. My guess would be Benedict XV might probably be amused. I've no doubt the late John Paul II would have loved it an possibly used the bobble head during Mass at the ballpark.

This is well done shtick. By asking to pull the add, the video will get more publicity than it would have otherwise. Maybe the Pope should wear red once in a while.
