I don't care WHO you are or who you think you are - it's a positive song that I hold close to my being for the words and the enthusiasm. Charlie Sheen? Who cares!
thanks jboycook for that info...I had been told by friends who know guys that were playing with him back then that he didn't care for it and wouldn't play it live...sounds like it must have been true from what you're saying. One of these days I'm going to try and ask Alex...I have friends that have been playing with him recently...although he may 'not' be able to talk about it. Who knows...:)
@selowe86 Hey no problem. Like I said, it for sure went down like that. It was really cool reading your explanation on the song. I hate going around with unanswered questions in my head. I never could figure out why a band would play their biggest hit at the time over the PA. Now I know. Awesome. Take it easy and good luck in the future.
Santana has always put out excellent hits but this song just hits home for me. It really is a soul inspiring song. No matter what life throws your way, you can always just pick yourself up by your boot straps and dust yourself off and know deep down that you are winning. You cant let life get the best of you, you have to have the upper hand or you will definitely sink. A truly inspiring song to be strong and never give up! Awesome song here! :-D ♥
@63memnoch Same with Bruce Springsteen, sometimes you have to look beyond the forest to see the trees. Just chill out and enjoy the music. It's not often you get to hear this caliber of music, so enjoy it while you can.
@selowe86 - your comment is confusing. Can you explain more? What do you mean Santana "didn't play it"? Is that not him on guitar? Is that you on vocals? (the "lifted tracks")? Who is the credited vocalist and why? I'm intrigued.
@algerhistogram -- No...those are the tracks originally recorded at sound factory with Kenny Nolan producing...I (Steven Elowe) was the artist...but it was Russ Ballard's tune...and it was Russ's friend Alex that used the tracks for his audition with Santana (at least---that's the story I was told)--
continued--when I first heard it it blew me away because I remembered the track and I remembered the solo I played...the BB King-ish style solo...and as a youngster I repeated my phrasing a lot (if you listen it doesn't sound ANYTHING like Carlos' sound-or phrasing)..and I thought "WOW-he learned my solo note for note!"...but on further inquiry I was told that Alex just removed my voice (and the gazzilion guitar overdubs they used to do back then) and just used the the tracks. ??
well steve elowe.....honestly i didnt even know it was a santana song until fairly recently.....used to listen to it at the roller skating rink i used to go to as a kid....its a great song.....i do hope you got compensated for it
@francquie --ya...not much, but I did get paid for the session...then when it became a hit for Santana the few years later, a friend encouraged my to contact the Musicians Union to see if I had a check for residuals...and there was! $75...ha! Awesome....
When Dale Earthart let JR. when his first race at Datona, they played this song! JR. got up on the hood of his car and was jumping up and down. Dale told him to get down!!
Beautiful song of Russ Ballard!!!!!Great version...even if i prefer that of Russ....it's in his second album of 1976 titled "Winning"!!Great Santana...but GREAT RUSS!!!!!Kiss to all!!
Check the album credits - this song was written by Russ Ballard, not Carlos Santana. Don't get me wrong, this is a great song, but Carlos did not write it nor sing it.
@Epiphany2000 --Hi Epiphany...not only did he not write nor sing...but also didn't play it...I did...I'm Steven Elowe...I did it for my record a couple years before (I was then signed to Four Seasons Productions...Bob Gaudio and Kenny Nolan Produced this song we got from Russ Ballard)...the producer and the record company had a falling out...they shelved the song. Russ's friend was going to audition for Santana (from the story I was told) and they just lifted my voice and used the tracks.
@dumbbros Yes Dumbbros...That's the friend of Russ Ballard I mentioned above...Russ had given us just a piano demo when we recorded it. Kenny Nolan (who wrote Lady Marmalade) and Bob Gaudio (from the Four Seasons) produced it for my record deal. Kenny and the record company had a falling out...they shelved the song. Then a couple years later Alex, used our master (instead of re-recording) to audition for Santana as the new singer. They left my guitar-I used a friend's tele-and took off my vocal.
@rspaniel ...well spaniel...if you are familiar with Carlos' playing - listen to the solo-you'll see/hear that the tone and phrasing is NOTHING like he plays (I wasn't even happy with what I did, repeated licks too much-he would have done better)...I know guys that have played in the band and have been told he hates the song and won't play it live...don't know if that's true as it was 3rd party info...however, if you're correct, then I guess I should give back the money I was paid for doing it...
@selowe86 Dude, I don't know any facts about Carlos not liking the song or anything, but this is a for sure fact. I saw Santana at the Texxas Jamm and it was the Zeebop (?) tour and this was no doubt the top song. They played the song over the PA system when they came out. I thought that was fucked up and it made no sense to me. Play your biggest hit at that time over the PA and not do it live? Now it makes sense and adds validity to your story. I was there and that's how it went down. No shit.
@selowe86 Winning-Santana from the album Zeebop So all of this published info is a lie? Vocals were done by Alex Ligertwood the band line up for Zeebop was: Armando Peraza-Perc. Graham Lear-drums Alex Ligertwood-vocals David Margen-bass Alan Pasqua-keyboards Raul Rekow-perc. Chris Solberg-guitar Orestas Vilato-perc Carlos Santana-guitar, vocals
@rspaniel for the album Zeebop...true...that particular song? the story is in all my comments above. After the falling out with the record company I heard the Santana version and had remembered my version and what I played. I called Steve Lukather and asked what he thought. He said, If that's you (and not Carlos learning what you did) there should be a check waiting for you at the Union. There was...not much, just residual session money. It doesn't sound like him and I got paid. What can I say?
@rspaniel That's what I was told...I don't know if you play professionally, but there are a lot of songs I've recorded or have been asked to play that I don't care for...and won't play live...so it wouldn't surprise me. The song is sooo not his style...but the record company knew it was hit so it's on the record...and was a hit like everyone thought. I play with Chris Montez..he'll tell you he never wanted to record "Call Me"...record company knew it was a hit and had him record it..
@selowe86 , Just came across this, Hadn't heard it in a while, and lo and behold as I do, I scrolled down to see comments, just for shites and giggles.... I always loved the harmony of this song... real good lyrics... was never really sure who was responsible for it though... So now that I know..... Niiiiiice!!! Got any more? My ear holes are always hungry!!! :)
