The language in the church is Syriac/Aramaic,i understand because i am Aramean (not armenian) and it's my language. The Lebanese Maronites are roughly a blend of Phoenician and Arameans. I know this because i am from Lebanon and study my history without the arabic propaganda that has twisted the heads om the majority in the middle east. Thak's you alot for this uppload.
these elderly men's speaking was understood to me in it's majority, an Arabic speaking, I was mistakenly thinking they are the descendants of 8th century Arab conquest.
How can you transfer like this 6000 ppl to another country. Imagine what would happen in Lebanon if the transportation happens... All muslims especially the terrosists-hezbollah would rebel. Also menuria said that turkish cypriots didnt slaughter Greek Cypriots at 1571 there was only ottomans no turkish-cypriot! Over the years the barbaric invaders (ottomans) stayed in cyprus paid no taxes, had more rights and called themselves Cypriots
currently the EU is suggesting to/asking the Cypriot government to preserve that language but when the few mother language speakers living still in Kormakitis were the government has no control makes the task daunting. it will take a few good years before it is fully documented and incorporated to schools.
in the same way Cypriot Greek and Cypriot Turkish must also be documented and taught in schools because they face the same discrimination and decline.
they weren't forced there by anyone. the greeks didn't discriminate against them because they were a small christian minority and that is why they lasted 1000 years.
after the 1974 invasion of cyprus however maronites (were forced to/chose to) fled their villages into the south and blended with the greek cypriot community. the constitution didn't provide for teaching the Cypriot-maronite language and the parents stopped teaching it to their children. that's why it is now endangered.
maronites in cyprus are recognised as a minotiry by the republic's constitution and are represented in the parliament. they have equal rights in all levels like every other citizen. during the founding of the republic the maronites chose by themselves to be a part of the orthodox/greek-cypriot community because they had far more common things with them than the muslim/turkish-cypriots.
their language was preserved because they were concentrated in their villages.
in your description box you make it sound like that Phoenicians were the first settlers and the real cypriots. That is of course historically wrong. The first people n Cyprus were Eteocypriots. Phoenicians and Greeks SETTLED on the island and never actually invaded.
The local population eventually chose the Greek civilization and were hellenized. Modern Cypriots are descendants of those hellenized eteocypriots.
Maronites left Kormakitis after the TURKISH invation. Most of them now live in the free areas of Cyprus along with greek-cypriots.They also have a representative in the parliament.I dont understand why you accuse the greek-cypriots.
Cypriot Maronites are very important for Cyprus Islant because of their LONG HISTORY of their churches and civilization.
It is time for TURKISH CYPRIOTS AND GREEK CYPRIOTS to understand that this small community deserves its villages, ancient buildings and everything else that belongs to it from 686 AC up to now!

As a Turkish Cypriot, I am intrigued and very interested in learning about Maronite Cypriots in Cyprus. There are even "claims" that my own roots may stem from possibly the Maronites. I must say that, as a Turkish Cypriot though, I personally have never come across any bigoted or racist attitudes towards Maronite Cypriots from within my own community.
The only possible conflict in history that I can think of is that Maronite Cypriots may have sided with Greek Cypriots during the oppressive days against Turkish Cypriots. I look forward to reading your info.
Thankyou for the info...it does seem that you are referring to the days of Ottoman Conquest & the displacement of people on all sides during the 63 - 74 era.
Not only Greek Cypriots but also Armenians and Maronites were slaughtered by Turks (not Turkish Cypriots). Both during the Ottoman occupation of Cyprus (1571-1878) and since the Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern part of Cyprus, in 1974
The same attempt was made on the Turkish Cypriots via force by the declarations of ENOSIS and the EOKA terror organisation. Luckily the North is a now safe haven for Turkish Cypriots.
What is the population of Maronite Cypriots in Cyprus ?
Roughly from 3,000 to 10,000. Although you figure since they are not all living together anymore, not like the people who still speak Aramaic in Syria, Iraq, and Iran. Those villages are isolated while these people are not. I studied the history of Cyprus, & I saw the Greeks as good at first, but when I learned more about the Maronites, I soon figured out that the Greek and Turks were really same. The Turks were the first to and last to give the heaviest blow against Cypriot Maronite community.
The Turks have no right being there! The Maronites actually out numbered them before they came in 74'. But the Turks moved in, killed the Maronites and wiped whole villages off the map! As so did the Cyprus Greeks, but there is not much detail about that, they just pretty much don't respect them which is just pitiful because these people bare a language and culture far greater and more important then there's, considering that theirs has influenced the Greeks!
Not that I am saying I have anything against either people, but I believe the Greeks & Turks should detach themselves from Cyprus & let the remaining population living there be the citizens. The British should leave especially. I believe that what ever Greek & Turk that lived there before 1974 should stay. Although, when you think about it, if every Turk and Greek was wiped off the island, the only real atrocity would be life and not culture nor language like the Cypriot Maronite community.
They can't really go anywhere, people can't communicate with them except for there own. So basically I see them as the most righteous on the island. They never tried to harm the Greeks nor Turks, but both of these people slaughtered them. Something that is always left out of the history books, they were caught in the middle and intentionally attacked and invaded.
I am wondering shouldnt the Cypriot Maronite have the right to come to Lebanon and get the Lebanese citizenship? especially that they were orginally lebanese a 1000 years ago plus i think they would be able to keep speaking language easier in Lebanon than in Cyprus
The Greek Cypriots have done another fantastic job of diluting another peoples (other than Greek) of Cyprus, the Maronites into Hellenism and simple extinction. The very unique Maronites have been swallowed into Hellenism as part of Greek greater visions...how sad.
I wouldn't jump to accusations like this. It isn't too late yet. And much is being done. I would say much has been lost, although there language lives in there religion! It's still around, it's just a lot of the population has been sucked into Hellenism. That is why we have this clip here; there still are people who carry the tong. It is not extinct, but it is endangered! No doubt about that, and this is what makes it so sad..

Educate me, when and where were Maronites slaughtered by Turkish Cypriots ? Are you referring to the Ottoman Conquest 500 years ago ?

You really want me to educate you on this? Okay, but get ready to read 6 to 8 comments worth.
