  • I had the sturdy birdy and I had to put a tail wheel connected to rudder to get it to run straight and taxi.

  • very cool planes!

  • taking off is the easy part

  • thanks mattjo. that was the best description and analysis of that video i could imagine. we have to remember of course, your brother, who remains hidden in his own closet of flying fear and anxiety, is the king-pin of this clip. i did not initiate this maneuver without his consent. just imagine if i had, somebody would have stuck a stop a-head sign out there for me top ricochet off from. got it?

  • *L*

  • thanks mattj for clearing that up. actually the second take-off was patterned from something i witnessed by mattj's brother. he's a legend.

  • Actually that move was perfected by the late Ulrich Von Crapenfligher. It ultimately led to his death years later.

One afternoon while demonstrating the difficult and as he would discover dangerous maneuver his radio malfunctioned and the plane promptly spun around and impacted his groin area destroying his left testicle.

He was later to be quoted, "I meant to do that...really."

  • After the accident...er, um, demonstration he was thoroughly set off balance and prone to bouts of dizziness. Friends also mentioned a habit he had in which he'd reach down to scratch a nut and time and time again momentarily be surprised not to find one. Doctors say that Phantom Nut syndrome is terribly annoying and have driven many to insanity.

  • Though Ulrich tried very hard to get back into flying his illnesses were too much for him and he quietly stumbled into obscurity. Until one fateful day.

Very few people recognized his name in the following newspaper article and fewer still noted the agonizing irony:

  • A man was killed today after a small plane was forced to perform an emergency landing onto a crowded city street downtown Hapsburg. Onlookers described the sound of a plane with apparent engine trouble. The pilot said he an engine failure minutes after taking off and wasn't able to find a more suitable place to land. His only option was Mainstreet. "It was either that or crash into a building", he stated. "I could only hope people would get out of the way" the pilot exclaimed.

  • Most pedestrians did clear the street with the exception of a Mr. Ulrich Von Crapenfligher. Witness say The man acted very oddly. One women added, "He looked confused as to what to do and strangely he had a hand down his pants. Once he saw the plane he tried to run but tripped flat on his face." "It was just awful", she added.

  • Mr. Crapenfligher was struck by the plane in what was described as a low swoop of the aircraft moments before it cartwheeled down a side street nearly missing a parked Ford Focus.

The pilot contributes his plane's durable PVC fuselage and foam wing to his survival.

  • he he

  • Whats up with the boots?

  • Yeah good question.

Well you can't see it in the video but the ditch is full of water and the field there is pretty wet too. We don't always land on the road. We're getting better at it though. Last weekend we were landing on the road with 20mph @ 90deg cross. I'm flying a Tower Kaos now. That Sturdy Birdie pilot is my bud Scot, he's now flying a Dazzler.

    Thx for watching
