It is about the spirit in us and it is about not being a defeatist, but most of all it is a great tune to dance to. 'cause like Jericho, yeah, walls come tumblin down, yeah...'

  • Profetica e ancora attuale! Fortissima.

  • Hard crowd to play to, they look so nonchalant!!!

  • I think they're bein ironice - Socialist Realism etc...

  • What???!

  • "Socialist Content in National Form" --J-dawg Stalin

  • Dee C Lee to me will always be WHAM, shoot me down but she is.

  • Isn't the Socialist Realist Palace of Culture wonderful? I hope the Poles never tear it down, it would be a crime.

  • But the backing singers suck the fat one!

  • BEST... SONG... EVER!! That guy has a wickit-good voice!

  • "They take the profits... you take the blame"

Hmmmm ... this could have been written in 2009 !!!

  • I just recently downloaded Party Animals with the English actor Matt Smith who has been cast as my beloveth David Tennants replacement on Doctor Who and in the course of Party Animals this song is played and I burst out laughing because I was in love with this song 20 years ago and have not heard it in atleast 20 years..funny how those great flashbacks work. Now listening to it - I don't really see what it is I loved but it still has a neato beat.

  • cheers for the life story

  • Cheers for you not addressing me.

  • dee looks like furonda from antm..

    djrj

  • unity is powerful

  • Nice historical irony to make a video for a song called Walls Come Tumbling down in an Eastern bloc country.

The audience don't seem to be reacting much - I wonder if they think they might get trouble from the Police if the cheer too loud...

or perhaps they were just unimpressed.

  • Muito bommmm, escuto Style Council desde minha infância, gostei muito, fiquem Todos na PAZ DE CRISTO, Sandro :)

  • To think Dee had to pretend for all that time that she was George Michael's girlfriend....hell I know what to do with that fine stuff !!! Being a "Beard" for George was a waste of time to help him cover his gayness.....

  • Great song with strong lyrics. I like that this song has a strong social message.

  • He sounds left wing type of person. Thats good man.

  • and overall as a frontman,the boss,the chief,the genius...paul weller

  • D C lee appear awesome,sexy...hottie!!!! mmmmmm...and a backing vocals perfect

  • The competition is a colour tv

Were on still pause with the video machine

That keep you slave to the h.p.

Could someone please explain the 3rd line?

  • Hire Purchase

  • HP stood for Hire Purchase. Just a form of credit that you paid back in weekly or monthly instalments.

  • "...governments crack, the system fall.."

very apt at this time. weller is always ahead of time.

oh, dee c. lee is amazingly beautiful!

  • Quite agree bolder, Dee C lee is bloody hot!

  • nice blochead cut that's RETRO!

  • i hate to say this but paul weller has turned into a complete tosser lately full of self importance

  • hes kinda alway been that way. Like in the jam they never talked at all and on the last gig in brighton he had an interview on the pier mutch to the annoyance of rick and bruce.

    Read a biography btw.

  • weller is a musical god this song is a attack on 80s thatchers britain for the rich&money boys&girls it was great for the rest of us it was a bad time its good to see this time around there getting f,,,, too by this depression

  • Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thatcher's free-market ideology is finally revealed to be an atrocious doctrine (as many of us already knew). For once, the rich are suffering more than us working-class people. Will it change anything? Maybe pigs are flying... Great song by the way.

  • Paul Weller looks really cool, ultra smooth in this vid...he's always had top style..

  • paul weller is super fine!

i did not understand this song until now. i see it in its context now DUR DUR!!!

  • ah weller and his emo hair :)

    HE is a musical genius

  • Weller Top Man

  • I've been to Warsaw! Nice place :-) Thats where I got pregnant with my son - we could have called him Warsaw but instead we settled for George.

  • great band ! big eighties!!!

  • What a bunch of stiffs in the audience???

  • It was filmed in a University in, I think Stalingrad well before the end of communism......so rockin'it up with a camera on you just not likely to have happened in those days!

When they are getting off the bus just watch them stare at her coz she's black. That still happens.

  • especially during the 80s and in communist Poland...

  • Gosh, such a smartass you are!It was filmed in Warsaw merely 4 years before the end of communism in the only one at the time(!) Polish jazz-club Akwarium. The idea behind the clip is vague, one should really ask Weller, as this was generally an anti-capitalistic and anti-Thatcher song...Capitalism eventually prevailed and the legendary club (est. 1970) was bulldozed and replaced by 164 meters high 5star hotel. BTW, there's no such a city as Stalingrad anymore. There's Volgograd. It's in Russia.

  • And there is a big local move to have it put back to being called Stalingrad, and why not, the hardest and nastiest fighting in modern history that turned the tide of WW2 was Stalingrad.

Even though Stalin was a paranoid control freak mass murderer, who also held up fighting around Warsaw, refused permission for the RAF to do airdrops, so that SS Gruppenfuhrer Jurgen Stroop could annihilate the ghetto, (April 19-May 16, 1943). Stalin won and got away with it!

    Just smart. Be polite.

  • ps. Before it was Stalingrad it was Tsaritsyn (1589-1925), Stalin was the local commander of the Comintern who won the city for the Bolsheviks during heavy fighting, which is why it was renamed in 1925.

Volgograd Oblast is the region, renamed the city Volgograd by Kruschev in '61 or '62 coz he hated Stalin.

If you need any other information feel free to ask.

  • Dear Jack, you're quite good in browsing wikipedia. Anyway you're not quite right. Stalin stopped his troops on Vistula bank in Sept 1944 making tactical truce with Hitler. SS commander von den Bach-Zalewski could level down the whole city (and eradicate 250 thousand people by the way) and anihilate main forces of Polish resistance loyal to the government in London (Warsaw Uprising Aug-Oct44). So try harder, Internet is a good source but it's quite handy to have some elementary knowledge too.

  • None of this is from Wik. My parents and grandparents and all their generation were in the RAF and Navy at this time, and I read a lot of stuff a long time ago.

The Jewish ghetto uprising of '43 was supressed by Stroop, who wrote the 'Stroop Report' for Himmler. Churchill had wanted to airdrop arms and medical supplies but needed to refuel and go thru Russian airspace, and Stalin refused.

The same happened again in '44, again refused by Stalin.

Never heard of any tactical truce.

  • It's a common mistake confusing Ghetto Uprising43 (I recommend a book "Converstions with an executioner") with Warsaw Uprising44 (recommend "Rising 44"). In spring 1943 Red Army was 1000 km eastward, near Charkov, facing the battle of Kursk. There were no Soviet troops, airfields nor airspace near Warsaw at that time. Moreover in 43 RAF had no airbase to carry out such a far airdrop. There were some drops in 44 from Italy finally but too little too late. The'truce'was unspoken & informal.

  • you both use wikipedia

  • And you are among the very, very best of anyone singing their own song on this tube..

  • yes D.C. Lee loooks very edible here

  • identity crisis!

  • weller is a communist prick! but D.C.Lee looks sexy! too good for that knob. im glad she got shot of him years ago!

  • p weller is a bit of a tosser really

  • Top tune !!

  • It was the era, you likely looked like a twat once upon a time, but you simply were not a in a pop band and had a video to track your earlier looks! Cheers

  • Socialist nonsense.

Plus he looks like an absolute twat with that fringe.

  • -Wow! What a great audience

  • Paul Weller, a true visionary. His work with one of my favourite bands, The Jam , can still move the mnasses.

  • Socialism rocks

  • forget the style council

    listen to the jam !

  • paul wellers best ever song . awsome.

  • are you joking ?

  • excellent

  • He sounds about like Bowie in this one... Phrasing, etc. I could certainly imagine this as a David Bowie song...

  • Wow! You're right. I've never heard it like a Bowie song, but now that you mention it, it really could have been.

  • yeah, I've seen her on YouTube in the vids for Club Tropicana & Young Guns. She and Paul's son Nat looks just like her.

  • heh, that car in the poster is a polonez. My dad bought two of them! they were cheap and pretty good! wonder if they're still made...

  • Friends of mine used to sing the chorus "Windows crack and buildings fall, cause Dee C.'s voice is terrible." *rolls eyes* She's not the best but she's not terrible.

  • helps when you're married to the leader. i think she sounds good anyway

  • Ehhh...she's average at best. Her voice has nothing special to it. But yeah, exchanging bodily fluids with Paul Weller can help keep your place in the band.

  • I think Dee C Lee is alright. But Paul Weller is better.

Who's the girl who sings in speak like a child?

  • Her name is Tracy, she was an artist signed to a record label Paul started up, cannot remember the name of it, she had one minor hit I think. She also sang backup on Beat Surrender.

  • thanks!

  • What a profethic vision. Walls come tumbling down, filmed in eastern europe !

Well we all know what happened years later......

  • "they take the profits, you take the blame." it may be that the people have finally had enough, and for once the guilty are going to be held accountable.

  • Ah the folly of youth! This must have been during Paul Weller's socialist phase? ;)

  • simple answer...we can make one of you but you can't make one of us. We carry all genetic possibilities for the human race.

  • Even if he shaved his head - PW would never cease to be "the man" - rock on Paul! The Jam, TSC, solo - it's all good

  • A) Weller's hair in this video is just silly.

    B) The Polish audience looks disappointed. They probably thought the Jam were coming.

  • Paul Weller's hair is usually silly. My hair looks silly too, but I can't sing.

  • racist tits .its 2008 fuckn get a grip grow up .what sort of talk is that shame on your parents you pricks

  • And Billy Bragg!

  • I saw Paul Weller play last night. Four years after this Style Council video was made, a certain Wall did come tumbling down. Shame on all apologists for the former Poland, GDR regimes et al!

  • paul weller is a lyrical genius

  • Paul Weller - The Original Jarvis Cocker!!!

  • Great song! Best regards from Warsaw!!

  • soooooooooooo apt of todays goverment.VOTE BNP

  • is he advocating Anarchism?

  • No, social altruism

  • LUV IT / BLOODY GREAT TUNE!!! but I had to laugh when I saw the crowd going wild at 2:42

  • Even better at 2.59, when you see some dude with his back turned to them, chomping away on his lunch...they were probably tempted in to watch by a baked potatoe and steamed cabbage.

  • Hahaa! I see him tucking in lol

  • 2 mins and 13 secs in he's singing about Welling United - yet he's a Chelsea fan(???) :) - Mattygreen LMHO haha

  • Dr.Psycho lässt grüssen

Dachte die hohe stimme singt nen kerl hehe

  • Aber irgendwie macht der ganze Song ohne Ulmen und Co. gar nicht mal so viel her.^^

  • fukin legendary

  • Dr. Psycho-feeling:-)

  • Communism, the most oppresive ideology of all time, look at the faces in the video, there is no greater violation of human rights than the state to control every aspect of your life.

  • Geez eh never heard that one before..LOL

  • great lyrics,it said everthing about the feeling for the bitch thatcher pity the youth of today cant stand up like we did,but i guess they are to interested in killing eachother ESTABLISHMENT 1 WORKINGCLASS 0

  • I just saw a statistical analysis of the Economy of the UK which showed huge growth in prosperity for all classes in the UK from 1980-1989. I'm in the States so I have no experience firsthad, but how do you explain? It was by a noted University BTW....not rigged by the politicians. Irregardless..Weller kicks ass. Great song!

  • "Irregardless" is not a word.

  • F***ing hell can Paul Weller write a song or what? This is such an incredible tune. The Jam/Style Council/Paul Weller is very much under appreciated in the States, although I hear they/he has a near cult like status in the UK.

  • he is a national icon and a much loved campaigner for peoples rights.i love the man, glad he didnt play at the mandela concert with all those love me i love myself washed up self rightous pricks

  • DC lee married Paul weller, they have been split up for a good few years now.

  • its got nothing 2 do with eastern europe!!!!!!!it was about the tory goverment at the time(1985)...so if u go away and read the lyrics it says public enemy no.10 meaning 10 downend street.dah!!!!!!!

  • Love this song so much but it is so alarming how at the time this song was so anti Tory, now can so easily be attributed to the Labour government we have now!

  • Dee c Lee has a great voice...

  • what happened to the girl backing singer

  • You mean the Grace Jones lookalike?

  • HaHa funny but Grace Jones is Miles Davis Black...The woman in this vid is more of a Cafe' O Lay..LOL

  • believe it or not Paul weller married her a few months after this video . Her name was Dee C lee , used to sing backing vocals for Wham/george michael . No chance of that poofter marrying her . But beautiful with a great voice , total soul girl who suited the style council perfectly.

  • DC Lee never sang back up to Wham, that was Pepsi and Shirley

  • Lol you're right there

  • did DC LEE sing in wham? yes or not? let me know please

  • thought it was pepsi and shirley?

  • hey! yeah she did for a bit at the beginning then Pepsi joined Shirley. think you can see her in the club tropicana video.

  • Yes She Sure did. Check out 'Young Guns (Go For it)' on Top of the Pops 1982. Miss Diane (D) Sealey (C Lee) was there and recognise her sweet tone "What the Hell's got into you?"

  • She was wham's backing singer before Pepsi, fact!

  • Sounds like David Bowie....

  • Great band, despite the keyboard player having a GINGER perm.!

  • In Warsaw recently still a shithole!

  • lost his direction.....again!!!! paul weller..i was never a mod....oh yeah really

  • Great tune by a great band

Anyone heard his new album "22 dreams"? Its shit

His solo career has been really disappointing

  • Does anyone no the name of the back up chick (gorgeous chick) she sang on another song with him

  • Dee C Lee

  • you mean Dee C. Lee. She was his wife and sang on all of their albums

  • So to you a woman who sings with all her courage is nothing but a chick.

Don't want to cross your way.

  • Thats a very strange thing to say. I certainly wouldn't want to cross your way.

  • How exactly is Come As you Are a "dangerous" song? Because it mentions bleach which is a corrosive cleaning agent, ooooooh riske. I never knew what the hell kurt was singing about anyway? Do you know what that song is about?

  • one of me fav songs :P

  • not only are you wrong (which of course you can be - in your case it actually quite suits you) but you're also a CRUSHING BORE. Go away mate. You sound like a frustrated music journo. "I expect danger" !!! Get off the net and go find some you little tart.

  • you're wrong in a thousand ways...This has a message. Huey Lewis and The News? Back to music school for you pal

  • Each to their own I suppose....I guess we all have Songs we either like or loathe...

I liked the Comment about Marty McFly though...I can just imagine that!!!

  • Thanks Horrorhead...I stand Corrected...Or rather Sitting at my PC Corrected!! :)
