as dan2e2 says................ frequent oil changes with the appropriate oil for your vehicle........ I have a 530d and bmw have extended service intervals hence the need for longlife oil. But I always change my oil half way through the interval with the appropriate fully synthetic long life oil with oil filter change..... The key for a long turbo life........ mines done 133k (touching wood) and no probs yet.... fresh clean oil and filter change.. turbos love the stuff!
Yeah the GT17 are pretty weak turbos --- however, it's sludging that generally causes this.
Mine is on 140k helping to deliver 230bhp....... regular Fully Syn Oil Changes are key.... if you've recently bought one, get the oil pickup flushed out and fresh oil change... (not at the OP obviously).

If youre vehicle is non-aero most likely you have the gt-17 for four cyl
