For me,, it's the moodiness of this rendition that makes it the one on top. The Apaches were the last holdouts against the US Army in the southwest....a noble, heroic struggle that was fated to fail.
On this date in 1961 {Jan. 23rd} 'Apache' by Jorgen Ingmann entered the Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at No. 2 {for 2 weeks} and spent 17 total weeks in the Top 100!!!
This is the best version of this song; second would be the Ventures version. If there was only one combining Jorgen's lead and Bob Bogles' bass it would be perfection. While I like the Shadows, I don't care for their version of this song.
Picked this song up aboard the USS Oklahoma City back in 1961 while out to sea. Before long, the entire radio gang was surrounding me and then just as quickly, we lost the signal. Bought the record the first day we hit the beach and played the crap out of it.
Others may have did this, but to me, this is the definitive version, Jorgen was smooth and classy and here in WI he;s the one most remembered for this!
@miguelobrien I actually got to ask him that very thing (He was STILL melting picks at 69) he said he never was any good at fingering so he learned to pick real fast and the rest followed!
Heavens to Duane Eddy! What an absolutely DYNAMITE version of one of my fave instrumental tunes from the 60's. If Jorgen was any cooler, he'd be frozen! THANKS for posting! You've MADE my day & my weekend! CHEERS, mate! :-)
this song kicks ass. i hear this song on the radio at my work. i heard it on satellite radio, didn't know the name of the song or the person who did this song. thank goodness for satellite radio.
@mantajim sorry dude you cant beat the original shadows version of this tune ,i do like this version as it a change from the norm ,this guy stopped the shads from going stateside with their version ,as a guitarists myself and have heard countless versions of this song i still hark back to the shads when i play it but hey this is what makes the world go round
I bought this record (it was probably an album) around 1961 (at age 14) and for a long long time it was my favorite recording. There are many who prefer the Shadows version but, with all do respect, THIS version is (head & shoulders) my favorite. I use to pretend (playing a yardstick measure) that I could play this song like Ingmann could. What a beautiful beautiful recording that brings back another time and place in my life. Nice post, thank you.........
I can play Apache and I did when the record came out. If one goes anywhere in the world one must include those countries outside of the United States and those other countries within the United States (the Indian Nations). Jorgan Ingmann was Danish. American Indians used to describe his playing of rhythm as one would listen to moccasins moving along the keyboard. I do recognize poor guitar playing because I played it just like the Shadows did. They stunk like I did.
No I haven't been playing in the basement all those years the thing is where have you been playing if you ever did and with that taste for guitar music I don't think anyone would want to hear about it. If you go anywhere in the world and you mention Apache " The Shadows " comes into everyones mind. By the way can you play Apache ? .
Jorgen Ingmann played this song as a classical guitarist would. He did not play like a rock band. The soft rhythm and the soft bongo was something that would make me think of Apache culture. The Shadows played like a rock band complete with banging drums, cymbals and a rhythm that clanged its way through the chords like beginning guitarists would. Jorgen played all three parts- bass, rhythm and lead. He had only electronic help.
I have a question? It seems the fans of The Shadows and fans of Jorgen Ingmann think all of the versions of their songs must be the best ! As a fan of Elvis Presley, The Beatles and many groups from the 50s up to the present ,there have been many versions by other Artists that have sounded better. This does not mean your favorite group is not one of the best groups or singers that we have heard! This is not a sporting event or some kind of game. Get a grip, some versions sound better!
No way is this version better than the Shadows, the guitar even sounds out of tune.
You can't get anything better than Hanks sound it's what every guitarist wanted to sound like. I never even heard of this guitarist and I'm playing guitar for years now.
@noelk46 Where have you been playing, in the basement? This song was a hit either in late 1950's or early 1960's. I started playing guitar the year it was a hit. All of the people I know who played counted this song among the first they learned. Because you never heard the song by Jorgen Ingman doesn't men that it isn't the best. Usually the first version of a song you hear is what you use in a comparison, and it is hard to judge.
as you can see in the picture, the composer is Jerry Lordan and the Shadows were the first one to record a succesful version. Jorgen was later but more succesful in the USA. The Shadows version became a hit in Europe, instead of Jorgen's.
@jeffsor47 the Shadows version is the original, whichever you prefer. This version came afterwards. The first recording is Bert Weedon's, but he did not release it.
It breaks up -- top end ... will attempt to repair.

There must be a direct link from this to the early surfer music. Dick Dale MUST have learned from this.
