Me and my brothers used to watch this show as kids back in the mid-sixties. I was always frightened by that scene of the robot walking past the open door. Don't know why, it just scared me. I was only about 4 or 5 years old at the time.
@fidomusic as a kid I could do a very good impression of Slim. When we were on a school trip to Switzerland way back in 1968 our hotel room had two lights above the washbasin with separate switch for each one. Just for a joke I turned them on , one after the other , as I did I said "Gamma rays on" Yobba rays on!" in my best 'Slim' voice . My best friend was almost on the floor laughing hysterically ( Well , we were only 12 years old at the time!" ) That has brought back fond memories!
I couldn't remember the name of this - I remember it from childhood - and it was driving me mad! It was the spaceship that looked liked a water sprinkler (lol!) that I remembered most! Thank goodness I found it!!! : )
Nice to know that I am not the only person that remembers this classic....it was the weird sound of the city and space ship at the start that fascinated me as a kid .....
The characters on this show were better devleoped than the Gerry Andersen series. I loved Slim, Husky and Larry Dart. And Marla was a hottie - well at least to a nine year old. Great great series.
You have to admire the work then went into this and those special effex - nothing computer generated here!. The wonderful thing about the puppetry it still allowed a childs imagine to wander and enjoy.I must have been 4 years old when I first saw this and I never forgot the gabbladictum!. I went on to work in space and medicine and just wonder how much I was influenced by these kind of programmes at such an young age?. Fab memories thanks.....
Remember how our Husky hated going into suspended animation? 'I hate the freezer..." he would intone and always came out starving, looking for a Martian sausage or three. My favourite line: 'The world looks like a big green melon and makes me feel soooo hungry...'
Surely there are more clips out there. Begging you...
Way, way way ahead of its time. Space puppets laced with a delicious irony and (several years pre-Spock, Bones et al) a Martian, Husky, with an outrageous appetite who actually *moaned* about going into space - like it was an ordinary boring 9 to 5. Bernie Taupin's Rocket Man (eight years later) must have been subliminally based on him.
I havnt heard that take off sequence for 40 years! Fantastic!!!!That chap counting off the sequences looked like a cross between Sulu and Mr Spock from Star Trek....early influences..???
wow, im 47 now and i had this show tucked away in the neutrons for 42 years. today my son was talking about space movies star wars, wall.e ect and it jogged my memory of this show, but i could,nt remember the title of this thing so i googled "60's marionette space shows" and as soon as i saw space patrol i was 5 again. thank you ronniehumphries1 for sharing this with all us 60s kids
I remember gablerdictom but couldn't recall what she (must have been a woman cos of all the chat) looked like. I had forgotten about the robots- till i saw one.. Really good to see it again. Thanks
Fantastic , at last, I remember the space city and vehicles through tubes from when I was 8. No one knew what I was talking about!. But they were wrong ha hah hah. It didn't adversly affect me!
@rumdoodle153 i had the same experience as you! i was 8 when i last saw this (im 54 now) and all i remembered was the opening sequence with cityscape and transporter tubes also the strange sounds! fantastic to find it again.
I used to watch this show and loved it when I was a kid in the early 60s. Never thought I'd get to see it again. I'd forgotten all about the gabbler - talk about awakening long lost memories.
My God, no wonder all us baby boomers are fucked up after watching this when nippers. It was nightmarish, what with 'The Singing Ringing Tree' 'an all

@Mackesson3 Thanks for the clarification. I must admit that I have no memory of the American "Space Patrol" series.

@Mackeson3 LOL. Nice story. I too used to say "Gamma rays on. Yobba rays on." LOL.

I remember the show, but for years, I thought its title was "Planet Patrol."
SkeeterVT 1 year ago
@SkeeterVT It was called Planet Patrol in The USA to avoid confusion with a show they already had over there called "Space Patrol".

I seem to recall an episode where the robots malfunction, and take over. Man, those robots freaked me out when I was a kid. Still do, if I'm honest!

In some ways this show was way ahead of its time. Even the whole look and feel of the series,
There was a dark and slightly creepy feel to it that just didn't exist in any other show of that era.

freaked out by the robots too when I saw this as a child in early 60s, but the show stayed with me ever since...love it.

I adore these old puppet series even now and Im 45.I wished the remade Thunderbirds using the original molds for the Puppets and maybe ad
animatronics with facial expressions but not that live action shit they did a few years ago.

I loved this show when I was a little girl and was in love with Slim!
Was there ever another puppet hero with a beard like Larry Dart? Husky looks a little like Gareth Gates!
Quite ahead of its time really.
