@AishaSekhmet what are you talking about? You made absolutely no sense in your posting. I think you had or have a point, it just wasn't made. As long as your hair is the way the Lord grew it out of you head it is natural. Some light skinned blacks have terribly coarse dry hair that is hard to manage, just as there are some dark skinned sisters with very straight hair. So whether its a fro, a puff, locs, or a fro. If its your natural hair with no additves then you're natural, no qualifying.
You do have a point. Please make a list of talking points, take a drink of water and watch the lip smacking (please stop). I wonder if you like African hair? What kind of hair does your woman have? How many brothers have you educated against the European look on Black women? Have you taken the time to ask the young men and women? Doubtful, what can we do to turn it all around? Dont just point out the problems dear brother, offer up a resolution. Otherwise, whats the diff btwn you and them?
i have to disagree about perms why wud a woman perm, and put dangerous toxic chemicals in her hair just for variety? sounds too far fetch for me, and maybe they are not fully aware and uneducated or just dont believe the facts
All women have something about their body that they don't like, no matter what color, race, age, weight, height, etc. Black women are being singled out because black people are nitpicked for WHATEVER we do. Even if sisters walked around "natural", racists would complain that black hair was "limited". ALL WOMEN PULL hair, and some men too in a fight. Men used to pull beards in medieval times.
Brother I love your take on this issue .. I am that sister who had it straight, twists, afro, etc..lol.. I honestly love variety like we did in ancient Kush where the queens had wigs to braids or locs. I like how u keep it open for people to really think and not feel attacked and not give ppl room 2 b defensive but u give ppl room for contemplation and learning. Mature. Keep it up. The other story will be the fact that perms are chemicals that can be harmful that was what made me stop 2 yrs ago.
Y'all only understand the conscious community stuff tell me why black women in the natural hair community are putting monistat in their hair. Why are they using horse products. Why do they go to church with their afros and locs. All men know is what they see on the outside. U don't understand that's y the conscious community can't wake up black women. The key to our redemption is sleep and y'all push em away. Betty shabazz had straight hair.
Mark u are on the outside looking in. I suggest you set up a profile on longhaircareforum and blackhairmedia. Go to hair shows and meetandgreets. Observe the sisters who don't have alopecia. Learn what a product junkie is. Find out why black chics are doing MN challenges and taking diatomaceous earth. Is the conscious community aware of the present or the 1960s?
@AishaSekhmet Sis, you are still referring to issues related to Alopecia and chemical burns. What is different presently compared to the 1960s in relation to why Afrikan women perm, weave and wig their hair? Other than the two issues you raised (which represents the smallest demographic btw) I think it is safe to say the vast majority do it because they hate the texture and look of their hair. Its this mindset that makes a mother perm a 3 year old in the first place, right?
And again this conversation isn't reaching the women who need to hear it and its started by a man. Hair Is important to black people why? How many men in this convo choose women by the way they look? I don't advocate putting lye on ur scalp. Its insane but our people are programmed
@AishaSekhmet To be honest, hair is most important to the women covering her hair up. If hair is so unimportant then they wouldn't go through leaps and bounds to cover it up. I agree that women should be at the forefront of this issue but those women haven't stepped up and done that. Instead those women are pandering to and making excuses for chemical processing because peer pressure is a bitch. They don't want to be ostracized, imo.
Only because u are judged by the way u look. People see hair clothes shape before they see inner man. That's the world we live in. I truly think black men can't resolve this issue especially my generation. This is the era of dymepieces and video vixens and the majority of African American are mentally sleepy. Doze mode.
@AishaSekhmet You're using this "inner man" flashcard to justify the idea of using perms and relaxers. A lot of times the outer appearance of a person is the primary result of a person's personality: for ex. if you see a person wearing a football jersey then 9-times-out-of-10 they're a fan of sports/football. Likewise a woman who uses dangerous chemicals to change the natural texture of their hair hates their hair, and their overall natural features.
Only the conscious community is discussing this. When black women with perms and weaves start talking about this then we may get solutions. Mark u have hair and I'm sure hair is important to u becuz ur hair is long. Inward change is more powerful than a dashiki and a natural do.
I think IsisPaperz video" Because...Weave Attracts Men!" helps to address part of this issue as well... let's admit that we are all brainwashed to some extent, BUT that we are working on some serious DEprogramming! I know I am. It's been over a year since I had to cut off my 8yr old, waist-length locs, I loved them, but could no longer care for them. & would you BELIEVE that I WAS actually thinking about perming after all that? & I consider myself 90% awakened. but 4 now I'm wigging it to work.
thank you for your honesty mostly but also thank you for adding some much needed perspective to this dialogue ...
i hope the Black men will listen to the Black women about this topic ...
MARK ... it may be a bit more helpful for you to address the men regarding Black women's hair ... address why men like perms and weaves and wigs OR address why men think their preference with how our hair looks is even relevant
@JolliAli My question is, what men are you talking about? I don't know one Brotha in my circle that is attracted to a weave or a wig. Also, why is a sista hanging around a Black man who wants to them to perm and weave and wig? Those men are called BOOT LICKIN' NEGROES. I've already got them figured out so no need for any deep analysis on them. Sistas need to stop associating with boot lickin' negroes and start dealing with real Brothas.
let me say this, my cousin doesnt like women with perms, weaves, wigs etc and he still has trouble finding a woman that is his compliment ... i think the main point for me is that men continue to use the outward appearance of women to judge their character ... thats my point
The side arguments are just avoiding the real issue. The actual issue is why do black women go to such drastic lengths to straighten their hair. They do it because that is what white racist society has brainwashed us to believe is the only way to look beautiful. Period! We have not grown up in an indigenous African society free of white influence. We have grown up dominated by white culture and have lost our African identity. Thus we seek standards of living based on what whites think is best.
the next time you are out in public, politely ask a sister with a wig if she is hiding embarassing hair damage. you'll be surprise at the high percentage of us who have missing edges and bald spots in the middle/crown area from harmful chemicals in our hair since childhood. when will there be a video on the sisters with natural hair who cant seem to wake up and join ya'll movement?
@AishaSekhmet I don't know what "movement" you are referring to, Sis, but it would seem to me that if sisters are covering their hair due to the effects of perms and chemical processing why would they take offense to people who speak against perms and chemical processing? If that is the "movement" I'm supposed to be a part of then I am guilty as charged. I don't think 4 year old girls should be getting perms.
I have to say though, that corporate amerikkka, in some places, does not always take kindly to styles like locs and braids...that could be another reason for the facade....
@nya2009scholar I can understand your point, but those of us who DO present ourselves as Queens get mistreated nonetheless....I have had locs for the past ten years, so I'm sure I look like a "Black Woman". Nothing was remarkably different with the way the men behaved in reference to that aside from praising my looks.....
MOST of the sisters I roll with absolutely CANNOT live without the weave and perm. No judgement, just an observation. They always comment about how they need to have perms and cannot go through any "ugly" stage...or that their hair is nappy... No variety, just the same styles and typical trends in weave styles....maybe they just don't know any better....
You done let the cat out the bag on this topic cause I can see you got some Sisters heated up! I'm laughing at Wacky O. and Sekhmet's comments to one another!!!
"A womans hair is her crowning glory and these whores aint queens."
Queen, King, Princess, and Prince are titles that are inherited through blood but earned in the eyes of the People. It is very seldom that we find Brothers and Sisters who realize that especially today and I feel that is the reason why we have so many of them running around being a bunch of pretenders.
It goes way farther than a lot of People think. I remember Seti pointing out on one of his much older videos a wall relief in the Nile Valley that was at least 4,000 years old that showed a Brother with 360 waves. I have seen other reliefs with Sisters rocking wigs done for ceremonial purposes as well.
The only problem I have with the hair care is the industry itself which we as a People do not get paid and we make Asians rich off something we can do our damn selves!
Decent argument and Good points made; because truly many of those women that hate their African hair, LOVE their Full African lips, hips, breast, and butts. Most take great pride in there African CURVES so we COULD say that they simply HATE THEIR AFRICAN HAIR and not necessarily the rest if their AFRICAN selves. Sure some do just hate their hair and some do hate being black. Like Brother said, Next step may be getting to the root of why sisters hate ANYTHING about their AFRICAN selves.
NOT ME, I LIKE VARIETY, BUT EVEN MORE I LIKE THAT I CAN ROCK MY BAD ASS FRO R RUN A PRESSING COMB THRU MY SHIT. I HAD A BLACK BITCH TELL ME ON MY CHANNEL THAT IF I COMB MY NAPPY ASS HAIR.....SOME SHIT, GO READ WHAT THIS IGNORANT NIGGA SAID. I LOVE MY HAIR, MY LATE HUBBIE WAS WHITE & LOVED MY BLACK, NAPPY, HAIR. HATED TO SEE IT STRAIGHT, HE SAID IT LOOK LIKE WIG. BUT HE LOVED THE FRO I LOVED TO ROCK.
FUCK THAT, IM BLACK & IM PROUD!!!!!!!!!! CHECK OUT MY HAIR...BOMB.LUV VID
I believe that women who consistently cover up their natural hair with weave, wigs etc do not like their hair in it's natural state- not all but many do this. I have 14" of natural hair for example and simply bc it is long I have many women ask me 'do you ever straighten your natural hair' as if it's not valid unless it's straight to prove that it's long or real, some also say "I bet it'd be pretty if it were straight" shows they still don't accept natural textured hair.
@TheWackyWorldofO from experience, i know all black women are not covering their heads because they are ashamed of their natural hair. if anything, i would be mad at the fact that a small amount of black women find this topic relevant. there are thousands of videos on natural hair on youtube. most of those girls have white boyfriends or go to church, worship jesus, and still dont think theyre african. this topic is not moving anything forward.
"there are thousands of videos on natural hair on youtube. most of those girls have white boyfriends or go to church, worship jesus, and still dont think theyre african. this topic is not moving anything forward."
Agreed! I know plenty of Sisters right now that are dressing in African Garb but walking around in public with Men of other Cultures. Many of the Sisters that I see rocking wigs and weaves wouldn't dare rap to anything but a Brother.
@BIGBKELtheGOD & @AishaSekhmet....this thread is a CASE IN POINT of what I was referring to in the video. When we question a Sista's loyalty to the race because of her hair choices and not focus on her problem with Afrikan hair itself we go down these conversational rabbit holes. That's why I tend to just stick with the facts. Now, unless like Aisha said there are issues like alopecia or chemical burns/disfigurement, it is a FACT they hate their Black/Afrikan hair and it is a source of shame.
@AishaSekhmet Stop fronting, how can you accuse anyone of being "the white man's bitch" but defend the idea of having the same texture of hair as that so-called "white" man? Your position is contradicting.
@AishaSekhmet Peace Sis! Is hair important to me? Hmmm...lets put it this way. If I ever dated a Sista who had alopecia I would try to convince her to go completely bald vs a wig or weave. I've seen some sexy ass bald sistas in my lifetime. Hell, we can get a straight razor, some shaving cream and a hot rag and call it FOREPLAY! LOL ;-) Now, chemical burns are interesting. I guess it depends on the severity of the burns whether or not going bald would work. Never ran across that one yet. HTP
@MrHolipsism my auntie permed my hair beginning at about 4 years old. I have chemical burns and can not wear a bald head because it looks crazy as hell. mark, saa neter, king noble, have all said shit about the hair topic but ya'll are not baldheaded, nor are u dating black women with alopecia. this issue is not funny. most black women want nice hair and want to look good and feel good. our society judges you on how u look. wigs, weave is expensive and its hard to find the most natural kind.
@AishaSekhmet I've never dated a Black woman with Alopecia and I've never dated a bald woman either. Neither has been by choice but by circumstance. But, to say that this issue is just about Alopecia and Chemical burns is being a little disingenuous, don't you think? It's like when I hear a sista say, "Rosa Parks had a perm!" or "they wore wigs in Ancient Kemet!" Like the reason they perm is because they are calling on the spirit of Rosa Parks and Ancient Kemet.
Lets be real, although I agree 1000% that the issue of alopecia and chemical burns should be addressed and videos done on it, THE VAST MAJORITY of Sistas who cover up their Black Afrikan hair do it because they hate the nappy course texture of their hair. Period. Point Blank. End of story. I have locs...if male pattern baldness was in my family gene pool I'd be rocking a Bald head in a minute and KILLING it. No man or woman should ever let any one SHAME THEM. F everybody b4 that shit happens.
BTW, Queen...I apologize if it seemed I was making light of the situation with Alopecia and Chemical burns because I was not . You are 100% right. It is not funny and I'm personally PISSED that mothers and aunts perm our little girls heads. So, if that is the root of the problem shouldn't we be addressing that? I'm quite sure a women who has chemical burns from perms is not PRO PERM, right? So, if anything both men and women should be in solidarity on the issue.
What you were saying about women fighting and aiming to expose the other girls natural hair is so true. Some ppl are absolutely terrified to reveal their natural hair and it's such a shame. Black people's natural hair is hidden to the point where ppl are often suprised when they see it! Imagine it, it's like black peoples natural hair is in hiding and it's a sad sad shame! I prob have too much to say about it so let me just stop right here!!
