haha these vids are funny:) so atleast we know if theres ever some sort of nuclear holocaust we'll have one person who can make shelters and be funny at the same time i think you should cover it with soil or sumthing just incase of the latter becoming reality
Normally the roof edge would terminate into a reglet and then flashed. I'm curious how you secure the metal to the 'cliff'.
Next, how do you intend to waterproof your banana building. There's some great self sticking materials out there with styrene butadeine styrene (SBS) but you have to get a cold weather version. The best would be coal tar pitch but not many folks like handling that material.
I'm not completely sure how I'll attach the banana to the cliff. Probably bolt it with some spray foam.... and an extra flashing bolted in the the cliff just above for water.
Most of the banana is waterproof already. all the bolts have rubber gaskets, and the pieces are shingled.
I recommend attaching a termination bar to the cliff it looks something like a 'lamed' in the Hebrew alphabet. Spray foam is usually sensitive to UV (and general weathering- including freeze thaw cycles) and not near strong enough.
Can you drill into the cliff? If so, I recommend drilling a term bar flush to the cliff (if you cannot cut a reglet into it) and then slide your banana flange up under the bottom leg of the 'lamed'.
I have no idea what all thoe fancy terms are. ...but I wouldn't put sprayfoam in the sun. Thats silly. ...and it doesn't have to be strong. It doesn't hold anything. It just fills a space. ...and when things are bolted to the cliff, it'll be smooshed in there pretty tight anyway. :-P
Oh, actually I set up a "donate the the Giant Robot Project" button on my website. You could totally help out there. Maybe I shouldn't have made it specifically a "giant robot" button.
You could easily put a note on it, telling me what the heck I should do with it if you want. :-P
I don't mean to sound uhh... whats the woord... like a begger, but.. seriously, any help would be totally appreciated. Thanks for even bringing it up. :-)
jaimie, how will you seal the roofing tin to the rock - butynol? do you think maybe you will get water seeping through cracks in the rock inside the banana building - below the roof?
I think a little water will get in the seam, but I think I'll be spray foaming the seam, then drilling into the rock, and screwing the metal down. ....then laying plastic over it before I bury the entire building. :-)
wonder if you could bury that thing to insulate it... how much weight can it support do you think? Excellent work thus far ^_^ giant pop rivets woulda been awesome instead of havin to go side to side. maybe would make it weaker too though
You should make a big wooden frame that the metal goes on to for the front wall.
Make the whole thing slide, or swing open, or something.
You wouldn't want to limit the use of that huge space by putting in a tiny door, would you?
Also, put a ladder-type thing on the back, so you can climb onto the building next to the rock, and put another ladder from the top so you can climb all the way to your house.
no wood! it rots. galvanized steel will outlast it by a lot. There's a big garage door about 10' wide, and at least that tall. I think it'll be ok for most things.
Is this going to be a dwelling or just a store? Are you going to cover the matal in any thing? I think if it was covered with earth and turf it would be warmer and blend in beautifully.
Yes, I'm planning on burying it. Its a workshop amongst other things. ....but most importantly a workshop..... for giants robots, and things like that. ...but most immediately a giant robot. :-D
If this isn't what you are already planning, maybe you should use expanding insulation foam on that back wall. Squirt it in the little cracks between the metal and the cliff and it'll fill them in, then set solid and not let in any draughts.
ahh you just made my night man. Cool footage. Although i was thinking.. maybe 30 years from now this will be a museum.. for robots.. which wiped all humans.. the robots love this place though because it is their ancestors cradle of life...OMG
arnt cliffs generaly caused by erosion..... i would have thought sooner or later a bolder will fall through your building, im just curios y dident you build it a few feet away?
Cliffs are sometimes made by errosion.... this one wasn't. ....there are no boulders above in this case. I made it right up against the cliff to save me building another wall, and because the rock is a huge thermal mass that will help regulate the temperature.
BTW, we need a Dr. Seuss-type name for that tool you invented that was a screwdriver, two vice grips, a hammer and three magnets all linked together :-)

frostheev 3 years ago
I take it you mean money work.... Go back a few videos.... I built a log cabin in Alaska for someone. ....and got paid for it.
JMEMantzel 3 years ago
How are you planning on illuminating the inside of that thing? Would that take a lot of power?
also: FAMOUS LAST WORDS! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
penguinx42 3 years ago
crap I asked the same question as antishay
penguinx42 3 years ago
Oh... i forgot about that famous last words. Thanks for reminding me that I'm a nut. ha ha.
Uhh... I'm putting windows in the front. ...and I'm nost sure about the night time lighting yet.
JMEMantzel 3 years ago
Yay! It's been so fun watching this all come together :D
Are you going to seal the metal to the rock somehow or just throw up the insulation and call it good?
Once the front is on it will be so dark! How are you going to light the inside? And will it be solar-powered?
antishay 3 years ago
throw up? Why would I want to throw up on the insulation. haa haa haa.
ok ok, I'm going to seal the metal to the rock. ....with magical tricks.
I'm putting windows on the front. ....and not sure yet about the night time lighting.
JMEMantzel 3 years ago
I can't wait!

Not sure if this has been explained... The banana building doesn't look to be waterproof. Is it, or what's your plan to make it waterproof?

yeah i'm not sure of those are holes, or just really shiny bolts.
roidroid 3 years ago
ya, I wish they were just shiny bolts! ha ha.
JMEMantzel 3 years ago
its waterproof. ....except where its missing bolts. I'll get to those later. I might wait 'till spring. ....but other than that its water proof.
JMEMantzel 3 years ago
That shit is BANANAS!
Also, I laughed out loud at "blablaah blablaaah blabl-"

Absolutely fantastic looking now.
And i love the magnet idea to hold up the insulation, really neat idea
DudeParallel 3 years ago
Thanks. :-) Ya, i wanted something that wouldn't pierce the insulation screwing up its effectiveness.
JMEMantzel 3 years ago
Oh... ya. totally safe. I just activated my anti gravitiy generator so I wouldn't fall. No prob. :-)

JMEMantzel 3 years ago
Just don't make the front opening TOO SMALL , then you wont be able to get your giant robot out. :B
robotwo 3 years ago
Ya, I'm pretty sure I'll have to "shimmy" out the door. ....but it should fit. If I have a problem, I'll just make the entire front wall open. :-P
JMEMantzel 3 years ago
The 'bot's dissassemblable, though.
Asdayasman 3 years ago
Wouldn't it be awesomier though if it could just crawl out of its "lair" without the need to be dismembered first.
robotwo 3 years ago
Aye, but less practical. =[
Asdayasman 3 years ago
I do plan for it to walk out without dismantling.
JMEMantzel 3 years ago

robotwo 3 years ago
one point? What kinda point?
JMEMantzel 3 years ago
'tis true. Its currently in about 100 pieces. ha ha. Well... thats counting bolts and stuff... like 10 main pieces.
JMEMantzel 3 years ago
I think you should put up a vid of you assembling and disassembling your bot, just to tease the viewers.

I need to get myself a banana building lol
I'l probably use it as an evil layer
It would have a red door
and every time I'd enter I'd probably end up saying "I got to paint that stupid door black!"
HeatedUnderwear 3 years ago
Evil layer, eh? heh heh. I think my door will have lots of windows. ....but with vines hanging infront to conceal.
JMEMantzel 3 years ago

JMEMantzel 3 years ago
