If he wanted to stay out of jail, he should have driven drunk or hit his wife or started a fight or raped a kid. They give you a stern warning and a gift basket for violent offenses. Messing with the man's money - you will get sent up the river without compunction.
First of all, you need a plan if you're going to commit a Felony crime to stop big oil. I would plant fake archeological remains and artifacts at the drill sites as archeological discoveries can sometimes cause serious delays. just my 2 cents.
For DeChristopher, I would have thought with his skill set and grad degree, he would have chosen to cover himself in oil and set himself on fire in protest. Regardless, I am confident that he will lead the environmental movement to new heights from jail.
I want to know who owned the land? As in, who held the property rights to it? In my view, whoever could legitimately buy the land should have been given it. This man is just a criminal for bidding money he didn't have. And for what? I'd rather the oil companies get the land so my gas prices can go down than for environmentalist nutcases be praised for violating property rights because they think the land looks pretty.
@Amaroq64 you would trade a little lower gas prices for this amazing place. why its not like its going to make anything better sure maybe gas prices would go down a bit. in short terms. but in the long run gas prices will just shoot back up again. even worse then befor even. but you know what would'nt shoot right back up or not come back at all. nature and all the amazing landscapes that have been forming for MILLIONS OF YEARS. ha wow what a great trade that is.
Why didn't Redford and his wealthy friends buy the rights? Imagine being able to bequeath your estate the absolute LAST barrel of oil on Earth. Why aren't environmentalists of every stripe collectively stockpiling money in time for next opportunity (maybe the next auction) to make a real difference?
I live in southern Utah as it is our landscape is exploited for out-of-state vistors by the federal government. 57% of Utah is federally owned. Google image search "who owns the west". Search "utah coal lockup". A trillion dollar coal deposit was encased in a 1.7 million acre executive order. Democrat Clinton looking out for the never contested Republican stronghold, not.
Why is a such a problem that the BLM is actually un-landlocking our resources?
Robert Redford go play defender of all crime somewhere else. The lands are not Bush's, Cheney's, or even yours Mr. Redford. How about mine? Living here my whole life, now unemployed.

Maybe this 27 yr old brainwashed liberal arts major should get on with life and start contributing something to society. How does he think his home or precious classrooms are heated in winter?
We could have free energy technologies but the department of energy and the pentagon suppress these technologies in the interest of national security.
If you'd get your head out of the oil dependend lies, you'd know that real conservatives, conserve things like our national lands. There are ways to apply Mike Strizki processes to restructuring energy use to heat homes that would create jobs and provide creative opportunities for your friends and loved ones, not to mention taxes to pay for other things to conserve, and research development.
Yea...and how do you think that land will look after 30 - 100 years of oil drilling?....COMPLETELY RUINED!. Think about YOUR land. This is America.....why the fuck do we need to make one of the most gorgeous countries in the world look like a damn deserted island. Wildlife brings more to the country than just gorgeous views....it preserves the life that lives there. Fuck OIL....it is alllllll a scam for little koolaid drinkers like yourself.
Rock on! I love to see positive pro-action to straighten out this mess. Every bit each individual can do is vital at this point. Thank you so much for protecting mother nature.
Go Tim, go!! May we all be inspired by this - get out there and stop the corporate greedies and thieves from selling, buying, raping, pillaging it all off! Sometimes all it takes is a quick finger, folks.
You will be in history books, a HERO for who r now children. It is a huge example of how to stand up to what we believe in our hearts to be right, how stop being coward, how to be honest vis-à-vis our conscience and the truth. Bravo! Hero a hero you are
Yesterday on NPR's Talk of the Nation, they asked people to call in with their heroes of 2008. A woman called in and nominated you. I cheered from my kitchen. What a remarkable act or conscience, courage and conviction. Way to go!
Tim has become a true hero in the American sense. Ironically the non independent media despise him for that. But as he states in this interview, he doesn't want to be a martyr. His intention was simply to do what he could when he had the choice and the power to do it. We need more people like that to raise awareness and when possible, stand up to the infinitely corrupt power structure (Oil and military industrial complex along with the criminals who masquerade as the government).

Wow, you sure are an insightful, critical thinker! Oh gee, I bet gas prices would drop down to like $1.50 a gallon if they open up this land!!
