This part was so beautiful. I was very pleasantly surprised that they put this hymn in this episode--and now this has to be one of my favorite Doctor Who scenes. :3
I actually think this is very relevant to the plot. These people are travelling for a very long time. They may be honking their horns at each other, but they all have the same dream. They envision seeing the sun and going to better conditions. When that compassionate voice comes on and tells them about what they're waiting for, then they forget all their hatred and remember being together. The world died of drug use to escape each other, but instead these people choose each other over drugs.
I love the hymns in this episode too - this one and the last scene with Abide With Me. Both scenes were very moving. But like TheAmericanDragon mentioned, I kind of didn't see their relevance in/connection to the plot.
I am a Christian but don't think Doctor Who should be a source of argument over God and religions. It is entertaintment, folks. And really, this is not about what you believe but ridiculing/mocking/criticizing others' beliefs - completely needless.
Every time I see Martha's tear, I shed one myself. This is one of my favourite Doctor Who episodes. I love how the Doctor is just in awe of the fact that people in this situation can stop a reflect by singing an old and very beautiful Christian hymn.
May I ask you guys a question: Why did they put it in this scene? I mean, it's great that they added a classic hymn. It's just I don't know why they were sing that at this moment.
@TheAmericanDragn I think it was because the Senate of New New York had a fail safe program installed should something happen to the Over City. She says proceeding the hymn that it was 'time for [the] daily reflection' and that she was 'so sorry'. That's my reasoning.
It's such a symbolic scene. Old Rugged Cross is a funeral song and when they have the panning shots of the motorway, the cars look like rows upon rows of coffins and the people are all in there, underground like they're already dead.
Crying right along with you, Martha... This is one of my all-time favourite scenes from Doctor Who, right up there with Colin Baker's corruption speech and David Tennant's "I don't want to go!"
@Tolly7249 one of my favorite scenes from Dr Who is the Scooby/Shaggy/Monster chase scene. Rose grabs a bucket of water and the monster runs. I liked how they recreated the scene from the cartoon with the hall and 6 doors, three on each side.
Wonderful. I wonder how many young people (under 45) realize how well this fits in with the theme of the episode. How at the end of the episode 'the head' gives his life that the world might be saved. Wonderfully symbollic. Greetings from Latvia
It is so moving! Does anyone know how to get it? I too am not religious, but it is beautiful, along with showing the relationships of the people!. Just amazing!
@nolapoboy do u mean this version, if so i have uploaded onto my channel Chucklevisionman and it has no inturruptions at all just a bit of vloume problems
this scene always makes me cry. i may not be religious, but i can appreciate when a song is beautifully sung. i'm sad i never heard of this when i was in chorus and never got the chance to sing it in the church we use for our Christmas and spring concerts.
@mistysilence2 I agree 100% this scene is just so emotional and sweet, I always get choked up when watching it, its amazing, you don't have to be religious to enjoy it at all, just enjoy the moment :)
@slightlyinsaneFTW Atheism isn't a belief system that centers around intolerance of religion. An Atheist simply just doesn't believe that there is a God or a higher being. Informed Atheist's are often very tolerant and open minded about other beliefs and are usually all for being proven wrong. It's the ignorant ones that have intolerance and are unwilling to hear another point of view.
@Sammiee8489 That's kinda the point I was trying to make there. Someone else said something about atheists hate religious people, I was correcting them.

It was a poem written out in my Nanna's book, but didn't sound Anglican, so had never heard the tune. It was just so beautiful, specially when Martha starts to join in. Triumph of hope & solidarity over despair. Would love to get recording, as all the download tracks are by Yanks & this is BBC Orchestra.

Amazed that hymn survived to the year 5,000,000,000 or so, which is when I think this episode was set....

This is one of my favorite scenes in the new Doctor Who. You can just feel the hopelessness of all the people on the road.
Too bad that after an emotional scene just as this they go right back to chasing monsters and cracking bad jokes.
