Volkswagen 2012 Beetle NY Reveal

VW should make a rear engine, rear wheel drive beetle... The original beetle would go through snow better than any front wheel drive on the planet.

Subaru is now making a rear wheel drive compact car, I bet the other Auto Makers will follow..

And about 30 to 40 HP.

Rear-engine (with rear-wheel drive) isn't practical in a modern car with multiple times the amount of power an original Beetle had, not unless it's intentional to force extremely sporty and tricky handling (see 911). And unless I'm mistaken, this isn't a sports car. They still could've gone with front-engine + rear-wheel drive though, so that's a bit of a disappointment.

The car looks sweet btw, much better than the New Beetle and especially less girly.

i wish they stuck with the ragster concept, it looked like a regular beetle but with a flat roof. but they messed up the 2012 by elongating the front, but to make a realistic opinion i have to see one in person. and compare it to our 2ND gen beetle.

Some people always said that the Porsche 911 just looks like a squished beetle, for the reason you mentioned (As you know VW owns lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, SEAT, Audi, Skoda, and this year they're merging with Porsche) and the fact that the original Porsche and the Beetle were both designed by the same designer. As the years progressed, the 911 changed. So as before the 911 looked nothing like a beetle, the 911 really does look like a squished new Beetle.

This isn't just a redesign. It's the deliberate evolution of an entity.. The Beetle has always adapted as needed in response to culture, and this looks to be no exception. Huge nod to VW for delivering on this. And: a 200hp turbo option? Yeah. I want one. NICE.
