From Napanee Ontario Canada I say, just as Bobby Orr was, is and will always be the best ever considering what he could have accomplished if healthy into his early 40s; Roberto Clemente was, is and will always be the most complete ball player ever AND, just think what stats he could have added after his tragic death in 1972! I recall crying when I heard of his death as I followed him mostly by radio through KBKA A.M. with Bob and Nelley. Those were the days. He was also a complete man & human
They still played World Series games in the daytime, when The Fall Classic is meant to be played, in 1971. Those warm afternoons were conducive to the enjoyment of the sport for player and fan alike. I had the great fortune to be able to see most of the titanic contest on TV between the Pirates and Orioles. I admired Roberto Clemente for all that he was. I still carry the sadness of learning of his untimely death on New Year' Eve in 1972 yet I am ever so glad that this man did live.
My God, he was a one man Wrecking Machine in that 1971 World Series! Clutch hitting, defense, Base running, you name it...My Baseball " Hero" when I was a kid and someone that I totally respect and admire decades later... R.I.P. Roberto
I grew up watching this great man and ballplayer. I think it is hard today to really imagine how much prejuduice he had to overcome. The most amazing combination of a real humane man and great athlete of the century. As he was and is for many he has always been my hero. Thanks for this great look back.
I've seen way too many of Clemente's great plays both at bat and in the field. But the most amazing fielding play I saw was when he once threw a runner out at first who hit a single into right field!
he was a agreat player.but,he was better as a human.Iam proud to be a puertorican like him.he was send by GOD to us to teach the world the love for others. please, tell your kids who ROBERTO CLEMENTE WAKER was.
@gabyirenne I'm agree. I think his legacy, nowdays, is more brilliant because he was a human rights' warrior. He never lived to obtain personal sports records -like today- or millonaire contract. He was authentic, very proud for his roots and, of course, a remarkable baseball player.
Every time I see the ESPN program PERFILES (profile) of him, I'm moved and I feel Puerto Rico close to my heart.
I'm too young to have ever seen him play, but he's one of the greatest of all time. The fact that he was Puerto Rican like myself makes me very proud. Thank you for posting this.

I don't know what's more incredible- the throw that Clemente made at 1:21 or the fact that Merv Rettenmund was called safe on the play.
