Thanks for posting. I to watched this movie numerous times back in the 80s on VHS, but was to young to really understand it, but loved the soundtrack.Older and alot more wiser now. Kinda get it now. Cultural differences.
Such a boring B film with so many errors in the film. One of the actors is lined up and executed at the beginning of the film. The director forgot that he had executed that character and he reappeared in the film! It has many dreadful errors in it that they have become famous.
@1440nell yes me too, all of it, & god bless everyone, all of u out there in this sad heartbreakingly sad world. & thank u sakamoto, i have to say. too.
Hello everyone i did a remix/cover of this song and it would be great if you guys could listen to it. Its nothing compared to the original but just give it a listen. I hope you like it.
@FDKYMO I want to thank you personally for uploading this beautiful song of this great movie! Because of your upload I was able to expand my knowledge towards japan with this song's movie, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, and with the book, The seed and the sower... Other thing I noticed, was that this movie brigs out a certain message, that can be understood by watching the movie repeatedly. I recommend this movie, and the book, to everyone that feels alone in the world... Thank You all : )
This scene with Tom and Takeshi breaks me up - such a shame that men were told to fight each other. This is one of the best pieces of music that I will ever hear in my lifetime - that is more important to me than fighting anyone...Hope you agree...Our differences are what make us special...only greed says otherwise!! Thank you Ryuchi - That is your Masterpiece!!
@wuckle yes thank u oh beeyootiful ryuichi for this utterly heartwrenching & achingly beautiful & inspired masterpiece....it heals my soul while it breaks my heart, Sensei Sakamoto.
I was watching some movies with a friend of mine, who is a movie collector, I told him that my favorite genres were ww2 movies, he gave me Merry Chrismas Mr Lawrence, said that he didn't wanted it anymore, never heard of it before but decided to give it a try since David Bowie was in it, and now it;s one of my most precious moives, most movies I just buy of the internet but this one really has a nice little story to it I think
@Timebubbles its called "fake execution", the fire squad uses blank bullets instead of normal ammo, i think they used to keep the prisoner moral down or semething.
@Timebubbles You don't understand anything about movies. Go on watching your shit Hollywood movies and shut up. By the way, why did you drop here? Stay away!
remember the first time i saw the film. hated takeshi at first then warmed to him as film went on. at the end when he said may i go on and on being drunk was blubbin like a baby.music in this film was awesome and still have lp version. thanx for this video.
I've listened to this song a million times and i've still yet to watch the movie. There was a techno version of this song I used to listen to as a teen and then one day I heard it on the piano and didn't realize where it had originated from. Perhaps I'll watch the movie on Netflix tonight. It looks like it could be a good movie!
I'll try and put as much in as I can here!Ryuichi Sakamoto- one of the world's most underrated talents- not only in his sublime musical prowess, but also acting ability- 'MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR LAWRENCE' [1982- starring a magnificent performance by the inimitable David Bowie [coming 'off the back' of a near fatal heroin addiction] is one of the most underrated war depictions ever made! It should have garnered an 'Oscar' for Bowie, original score and cinematography- a hauntingly beautiful movie!
The reason this has no dislikes is because it is a hidden gem, nobody will make searches relating to merry christmas my lawrence unless they already know about it, and this is a non-dislike-able thing so anybody who does know about it only have one thing to say about it, and that thing is "amazing".
This was a very beautiful movie. I really enjoyed watching it and I regret not watching before. >__< I reccomend this movie to everyone! It has amazing music and I really liked the actors. Ryuichi Sakamoto looked handsome in this movie! <3 And David Bowie!
@xTenshiAi -san, Thank you for the comment. I recommend you to watch this movie repeatedly. and Please read the original novel "the seed and the sower". Great novel...
@FDKYMO i DO watch it repeatedly..many times...i love love love it...i cry hard all the way through now, & this scene is absolutely heartbreaking...movie has been hard to find but i own the cd, i love sakamoto.
@xTenshiAi I totally agree. I only just watched it a couple of years ago for the first time and loved everything about it. The music especially is so moving and powerful.
Gawd! Tom Conti looks so young and innocent. And yet he has to pass the death sentence on his chief torturer, Sgt, Hara. The man who beat the crap out of him.
I've always thought that this was such a beautiful song. The movie can be somewhat inscrutable at times, but this piece has always had a special place in my heart.
@swmyers7 I once found it inscrutable, but just in case you don't know it's about the homosexual love the Japanese Commander has for the David Bowie character. In Japanese culture back then, it' s like homosexuality has a devil pocession of your soul. 'Forbidden Colours' indeed , since it about a man torn between his war time duties and his forbidden love for another man on the enemy side. I never guessed this either, but once you do know, you can see where the story's coming from?
@waybec102 wow that's shocking. haha even though i did kinda know that from the start. i like to view it more as a friendship/bromance instead of like, homosexuality.
@maimeu -san, This piece is taken from Nagisa Oshima's film "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" Please see also: 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983) - The Criterion Collection' or 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983) - IMDb'
For me this has always been in my top 5 pieces of music associated with Movies. The last time I was with Ruth in Macau this played in the background. The minute I hear it I am in Macau in 1993 and the years disappear, Music is so emotive and powerful and evocative at times.

This is the only movie which had brought me to tears, when he wishes him a merry xmas before his own execution.
The movie has all sorts of interesting dialogs like:
[Jack is being led to the firing squad]
Lt. Ito: [Chuckles] Can you guess what I'm thinking?
Maj. Jack 'Strafer' Celliers: Yes, I think so. Can you?
