It's like watching a rough, precious diamond just begging to be polish to sparkling perfection! All the elements are there. All they need - especially Lopatkina - is to be properly coached by someone who truly undersands the Balanchine style. The clarity, sharpness, musicality: dancing ON the music. Just thinking on what the great Suzanne Farrell could have done with them if they were in her hands - OH MY GOD!! What was just a very good performance could have easily turned into a superb one.
I much prefer Daria Pavlenko in this, whom I saw live. She’s the only Russian ballerina I’ve seen who “gets” Diamonds. I even prefer Agnes Letestu over Lopatkina and certainly, none of these ballerinas I’ve mentioned can erase my memories of Darci Kistler in this role. What Lopatkina needed before performing this role was some serious coaching, particularly in matters of Balanchine style, clarity and speed of footwork. She misses a lot of high points in the choreography.
