It's becouse Snapes patronus is the same as Lily's.

I think Snape did the patronus only to show that he never stopped to loving Lily... because, the patronus was the perfect proof, you know, like Tonks' patronus that changed when she fell for Remus... and then Dumbledore ask him "you still inlove with her after all this time?" and he answered "always" sniff... patetic...

I think he was saying to Snape, basically, 'You still cared for her even after all this time?' And Snape replied, 'Always,' because he had ALWAYS cared for her. :) Does that make sense?
